According to the speaker, Mr. Hyde is innocent in the incident with the little girl. It was an accident, as they ran into each other unintentionally. The eyewitness account supports this, stating that Hyde wasn't pursuing or trying to hurt the girl. Hyde took accountability and offered financial compensation to the family, showing his innocence. When it comes to the tragic incident that occurred between Mr. Hyde and the poor little girl on that little street, I know it may be contradicting view, but I do believe that Hyde was actually innocent and there was no malicious intent behind any of his acts. One of the reasons I believe this is that it was a complete accident that they even ran into each other. Hyde wasn't in pursuit of this little girl or was trying to hurt her on purpose. It was simply a misfortune. This can be verified by the eyewitness account who is quoted saying, all at once I saw two figures. One little man who was stomping along eastward at a good walk and the other girl, maybe eight or ten, was running as hard as she was able to down a cross street. So not only do we see Hyde had no intention of even beating up this girl, he didn't even know that she would be a factor of the night. And he wasn't even jogging or coming in an aggressive manner, if that makes sense, but rather the girl was just running without whereabouts of where she was going or any awareness of her surroundings. That's saying that the girl's all felt no one's truly at fault. It's just a freak incident and a freak accident. Hyde just has a much larger and more compact body than obviously the little eight or ten year old girl who was running towards him. So it was really just an accident. Hyde couldn't react quick enough and things just happened the way they happened. Not only does this eyewitness account make Hyde seem more innocent, but also the way he proceeded with his actions after. He could have simply just walked away and ignored the girl and left her there crying, waiting for her parents, but rather he stayed and took accountability even if it wasn't really his fault for the actions that were committed. When the family came and said, we'll post this all over town that you're like a child stomper, he acknowledges that it's a wrongful act and he wants to do whatever he can to make it right to the parents of this child. So what he actually does is he offers to give them financial coverage in order to prevent any miscoloring of his name. This is shown when he says, I am naturally helpless, no gentleman but wishes to avoid a scene, says he. Name your figure. The figure would be a hundred pounds as named by the child's parents. Mr. Hyde then accordingly act very swiftly and went to go access his safe and gave them ten pounds in gold and a ninety in withdrawal bullet check. So Mr. Hyde has offered the family a price and they take it and he willingly, extremely willingly, gives it to them. This shows that Hyde is an innocent man.
