With nightfall coming on, Tim and Hect decide it's time to leave the cow pond hideout and try to make it across the desert to the highlines along Highway 80. On the way they run into the sheriff and his beast of a dog, Mauler, who chases the boys to the highway where's he's killed by a car. The boys talk the old man driving the '48 Chevy who hit the dog into taking them along after pretending Mauler was their own, playing on the man's sympathies just as the sheriff was closing in on them.
