After escaping the junkyard with the burning shack, the two boys find refuge at a cow pond out in the West Texas desert. Believing they are fugitives from the law for burning up a bum in the shack, they discuss their options, but Tim seems hesitant. He relives the night before when he'd taken a hallucinogen and couldn't be sure he was not still seeing things. Hect, on the other hand, convinced they were murderers thought their only chance was to head for Mexico. Tim reluctantly agrees.
