Tsukuru Tsumuragi is a cook who finds himself in a crowd where no one appreciates his cooking. He receives support from a girl named Ikonos online. Suddenly, envoys from different kingdoms appear and announce that the students are heroes summoned to defeat demon kings. Tsukuru is not bid on in the auction, so he is left on his own. He is transported to a forest and must survive. He encounters dangerous creatures but manages to defeat them and gain levels. He learns to cook and consume meat dishes to enhance his abilities. After a month, he desires to leave and finds a monster he previously encountered. He fights it and gains a hermit's cloak, changing his identity. Our tale starts with a hero named Tsukuru Tsumuragi, finding himself in a crowd where individuals are wagering. Among the shouts, no one believes in the cook and deems him as worthless. He prepares the food as per the menu and notifies us when it's ready. Tsukuru puts a lot of effort into cooking, yet he is dissatisfied with how others react to his dishes. This isn't the first time he feels his efforts are wasted, but he finds support from good friends online. After tasting Tsukuru's dish, a girl named Ikonos praises his cooking skills and describes his dish as delicious. She admits to being clumsy, and the other guys have warned her against touching anything. Tsukuru is taken aback by her conversation with him. The teacher emerges from the teacher's room and advises her to be cautious with the fire, yet Tsukuru senses an impending event. Suddenly, a brilliant flash outside the window startles everyone, prompting inquiries about the cause. Many individuals ventured outside to investigate the situation. Tsukuru speculated that it could be the renowned journey to another world. A mysterious sound caught everyone's attention with a group of people on the balcony captivating the students' interest. They present themselves as envoys from a coalition of kingdoms, addressing the students as heroes summoned into the world through a unique ceremony. When one student questions the situation, he is surrounded by guards, and a team of individuals sets a challenge to assess the students' abilities and identify their allegiance. The allocation of students will be decided through an auction process. The summoned heroes will be transported to one of the nine kingdoms forming the alliance or one of the six nations, totaling 15 potential locations. The apprentice's mission is to defeat the demon kings causing chaos in the region assigned to them. An auction is held to determine the value of a particular profession. Students are instructed to touch a plate that reveals information about the person who touches it, including the price. When Tsukuru touches the plate, it reveals that he is a cook with a G-rank. Surprisingly, no one shows interest in bidding on him, prompting everyone to move on to the next item. People are expressing concern about the imminent danger to their world and questioning the summoning of someone seemingly ineffectual. Tsukuru reflects on his actions and contemplates his mistakes. Eventually, it is declared that Tsukuru is left to fend for himself. He is provided with a sword and some money to sustain himself for a period of time. He cannot return to his world and receive this as compensation. Once Tsukuru steps through the gate, he is transported to a random area. None of the countries are willing to take him in. Ikanos attempts to push past the guards and with a shout, inquires about the possibility of seeing Tsukuru once more. She was acquired by the kingdom of Luke Sandal. Tsukuru mentions that hopefully, they will encounter each other, and Ikanos declares that she will locate him. She bids farewell and requests Tsukuru to do the same, which he does. Tsukuru is then shoved by an Alliance member, hitting the gate and entering some unfamiliar terrain. In the boar forest, Tsukuru realizes that the old man who informed him about the gate has deceived him. A table displays Tsukuru Sumeragi's full name, along with his skills in cooking and arson. Tsukuru pinches the plate and discovers his information inscribed on it. He examines the data and discovers that the tree nearby is part of the ancient ball forest, thousands of years old, and it is not suitable for consumption. Realizing his ability to start a fire and differentiate between edible and inedible items, Tsukuru prioritizes searching for food and water, and sets out to explore the area. He discovers Shiromaru's mushrooms, and a sign materializes, suggesting that these mushrooms are more flavorful when fried. Tsukuru acknowledges that gathering mushrooms and berries is more manageable for him, thus opting to store the mushrooms to prevent them from spoiling. To his surprise, Tsukuru did not encounter any monsters. At that instant, a rustling sound catches his attention, causing fear to surge within him, prompting him to swiftly reach for his sword. Upon realizing it was merely a rat, Tsukuru expresses frustration at those who sent him to the forest, despite knowing his lack of combat skills, vowing to seek revenge on them once he escapes the forest. Tsukuru noticed a cat nearby, but it transformed into a large beast right before his eyes. Panicked, he attempted to flee, searching for his sword or any useful item. However, all he found in his bag were berries and mushrooms. The beast viciously attacked with its claws, sending Tsukuru tumbling to the side. At that moment, he questioned if this would be the end for him. He contemplates the necessity of avenging himself against the old man and the Alliance. He ponders the source of the cook's combat skills. Additionally, he reflects on his desire to live, and the imperative to seek retribution against all, including the beast that toys with him as if he were a mere mouse, and that he should kill him. Tsukuru tries to activate arson, to— Tsukuru thinks that maybe he can still set the beast on fire. The beast attacks and pins him to the ground with its paw. Tsukuru realizes that the beast wants to kill him, which would interrupt his skill. He decides to try to use the cutting skill. The skill works, and the beast is dismembered into pieces. Tsukuru has increased his level. Tsukuru notices numerous plaques ahead, indicating an increase in his level. Suddenly his body starts to ache intensely. Despite feeling pain all over, Tsukuru acknowledges his survival. He contemplates whether he harmed the cat, and recalls gaining knowledge before losing consciousness. Suddenly droplets of spring water splash towards him. He catches the drops in his mouth and drinks them. As he gazes at the nourishing meal before him, a sign appears indicating that it is steak from the rib of the beast he vanquished, possessing the power to mend injuries. Tsukuru mentions that if not for his condition, he would appreciate the steak's flavor. He moves towards the steak, takes a small bite, and observes his wounds beginning to heal. Surprised by his recovery, Tsukuru realizes that he is fully cured. Tsukuru wonders if he can truly escape from this place. A plaque reveals that he is at level 123, detailing his abilities, skills, and inventory. Spotting a formidable level 200 sword reaper, Tsukuru understands he is no match for such a creature. He opts to eat, and discovers a sign indicating that consuming fried meat will grant him night vision skills. Tsukuru ponders why a comparable impact occurs when cooking. He understands that the outcome of the dish varies based on where the culinary expertise is focused. The more he consumes, the more potent it will grow. To gain strength and seek revenge, he resolves to consume more meat. Tsukuru encounters a group of level 150 hyenas ahead. Despite attacking with spring water, Tsukuru realizes he cannot defeat them all alone. The sheer number of hyenas is overwhelming. Suddenly, a level 210 hell bear emerges and devours one of the hyenas, catching Tsukuru's attention. The bear launches an attack, but Tsukuru swiftly dodges and momentarily distracts the creature. He then employs wood magic and shadow shackles to bind the beast. Tsukuru attempts to use a throwing technique, but it fails, and the bear breaks free from the shackles. The bear then knocks Tsukuru off his feet and flings him aside. With its claws, the beast impales Tsukuru completely. Tsukuru wonders where his ordinary schoolboy life has gone. He seeks revenge, wanting others to empathize with his pain. He refuses to perish here, utilizing the cutting technique silently. The bear is swiftly dismembered and succumbs. Tsukuru discovers he has gained levels and no longer needs to vocalize the skill's name to use it. He acknowledges that despite his healing ability, caution is paramount. He consumes various meat dishes believing they will enhance his abilities and make him stronger. Unexpectedly, he encounters another creature before him. Tsukuru ponders why he always finds himself in such predicaments. Hoping for an easier victory, he recognizes that his expertise lies in close combat. He acknowledges that he is a cook, not a warrior, which is why he finds himself in this situation. He acquires the dark magic ability and finds joy in its potential benefits. Due to his torn attire and lack of coverage, he is dubbed Pervert, a title he does not particularly appreciate. A plaque materializes, detailing the hero's level 205 skills after 30 days, 8 hours, and 30 minutes have elapsed, marking the passage of a month. Tsukuru has become more resilient but desires to leave. He possesses various items of a specific quality. Feeling chilly and isolated, he recalls a tale where a creature befriends the main character, wandering the forest like an ancient being. Craving warmth and comfort, Tsukuru longs for a bed and companionship. If only he had clothing, it would make enduring everything easier. Suddenly, he hears a rustling noise. The monster he encountered earlier, which he ran away from because of his weakness, reappears in front of him. Feeling stronger now, Tsukuru attempts to attack it, but the monster swiftly evades him. Using wood magic, Tsukuru traps the monster, sets it on fire, and detects its presence. Every time the monster makes a move it travels 150 meters. Tsukuru believes that as long as he doesn't stop the fire, the monster won't be able to escape. However, there is a sudden explosion, allowing the monster to flee and hover directly above Tsukuru. He chooses to wield the sword. Tsukuru accepts the hermit's cloak and bids farewell to his former identity. Facing imminent danger once more, Tsukuru encounters a stick-like object remaining from the monster's combat, which unexpectedly begins to emit sparks. Afterward, Tsukuru was questioned about being a warrior. Tsukuru eats and masters the skill of cooking. The sword he acquired following the monster battle mentions encountering no-cooks like Tsukuru, who acquire new skills while cooking. Tsukuru never imagined conversing with a sword. The sword inquires why he is sighing. In a flashback, Maya questions Tsukuru about being a warrior and assigns him a task. She explains that if he possesses the ability to wield the sword, its power will also become his own. The sword questions Tsukuru about his belief in God, to which Tsukuru responds by deeming it absurd and stating that he does believe in God. He expresses exhaustion from being compelled to have faith in God for a month. Tsukuru explains that before arriving in the forest, he never believed in saints or God. He would have never acknowledged the existence of God, but circumstances led him to this location where he felt discarded. At times, he felt like he was on the brink of death, realizing that his survival was merely a stroke of luck. Risking his life became a necessity for securing food. The absence of proper footwear and clothing exposed him to sharp rocks and branches. Sleep eluded him when darkness descended. Tsukuru believes that enduring these challenges is what makes people see him as a hero as permitted by a higher power. God overlooks the waning strength of his servants and pardons human arrogance. This revelation leads Tsukuru to embrace his true identity. Resolute, Tsukuru vows to confront God. The sword, amused, voices no objection. It finds Tsukuru's quest intriguing and offers its aid in his quest for vengeance, inviting him to envision the sword form that best complements him. A symbol materializes, revealing the name Kuroki, along with attributes of invincibility, keenness, purification, evolution, and a singular lethal skill. Tsukuru contemplates the unchanged surroundings and recalls the advice of others. He names the sword Kurokiri and inquires about a nearby village, but the sword reveals that they are currently at the heart of the forest. The sword explains that Tsukuru ventured in this direction to confront and defeat the monster ruling the forest, when suddenly, a level 300 imperial dragon emerges behind him. The size and form of this creature are unfamiliar to Tsukuru, who wonders how he can overcome it. Sword reassures him that using a sword will solve the issue. However, Tsukuru admits he lacks sword skills. The sword defeats the dragon with the emperor's breath, causing both the dragon and Tsukuru to collapse. Kurokiri questions Tsukuru's condition and begins calling out to him. Tsukuru contemplates his hatred for the situation as the dragon towers above him. Attempting to devour Tsukuru, the dragon inadvertently triggers dark magic. Fortuitously, Tsukuru manages to conceal himself within the dragon's shadow, ready to battle. After consuming recovery food, Tsukuru rises to flee, declaring his inability to slay the beast. Questioning whether the dragon can detect him through black magic, the sword confesses it has never witnessed anyone survive an encounter with such a creature. The sword prophecy indicates that the monster will pursue Tsukuru until his demise. Tsukuru employs iron wall and emperor's breath to resist the attack. However, the dragon strikes Tsukuru, sending him flying downwards. Tsukuru resorts to dark magic, acknowledging he cannot escape or approach the dragon. He then plans for the dragon to track him through presence removal, leading to Tsukuru defeating the dragon. Tsukuru launches an aerial attack on the dragon, utilizing superhuman strength for offense and the iron wall for defense. He resorts to dark magic, and is puzzled as to why the dragon continues to pursue him, even after employing presence removal. The sword reveals that his killing intent is too potent, rendering presence removal ineffective during demonization. Discovering the necessary inscription on his tablet, Tsukuru realizes he has only one opportunity and conjures a powerful killing intent. With this newfound power, Tsukuru launches an attack and successfully vanquishes the dragon using the technique of dismantling. Tsukuru discovers an object resembling a wheel of fortune with smaller balls inside. The sword explains that it is meant to aid in defeating the forest's boss, and instructs Tsukuru to spin it. Feeling reassured, Tsukuru decides to give it a spin. A black ball emerges and detonates, causing Tsukuru to cough. Subsequently, a notification appears, indicating that a skill named Equivalent Exchange has been triggered. The sword indicates that possessing a unique skill implies its rarity compared to common skills. Tsukuru believes that the skill of the automaton is not a matter of luck. The sword advises Tsukuru to defeat the boss, triggering the appearance of the automaton to enhance his skill level. It's time to showcase his swordsmanship. Tsukuru easily battles various monsters, finding it effortless. Kirikari commends Tsukuru, who humbly mentions that swordsmanship comes naturally to him and expresses gratitude to his sword for the lessons. Tsukuru continues defeating monsters and acquiring various food items with special effects. A plaque providing information about Kurokiri emerges. Tsukuru's name is then changed to Kurokiri. While seated in the restroom, Tsukuru requests the sword. The sword understands that Tsukuru wishes to leave the forest, but questions if he truly wants to depart in worn-out attire. Tsukuru decides to craft new clothes using hyena fur, their skin, and sheep's wool. Near a cliff's edge, Tsukuru suddenly tumbles off. He ponders about the occurrence. Tsukuru catches the sound of voices in the distance. The sword recognizes them as bandits and inquires about the next steps. Tsukuru insists on verifying if the individuals in the carriage were the instigators. He is hesitant to form connections with anyone in this realm. Unexpectedly, a voice from the carriage calls out to him, seeking assistance. Those near the carriage are curious about the princess's summons. The carriage gets ambushed by kidnappers, who seize it and head towards Tsukuru. Tsukuru confronts and battles the kidnappers. Inside the carriage, the princess catches a glimpse of Tsukuru fighting, but remains unaware of the situation. Tsukuru emerges victorious. Sword inquires about the experience of taking a life for the first time. Tsukuru ponders why it felt so effortless. As he is approached by someone, Tsukuru recognizes the men who were protecting the princess before the carriage was stolen, but he opts to walk away. Upon seeing Tsukuru, these men inquire about his identity. Tsukuru suddenly finds himself in Allegria, a city where he receives a warm welcome from two girls. He is pleased that his life is taking on a more ordinary turn. A plaque materializes providing details about Kirikiri. The individuals whom Tsukuru rescued praise his actions, likening him to a hero from a fairy tale. The person they relay this information to expresses a desire to meet him as well. Meanwhile, Tsukuru explores the market, purchasing various ingredients and observing the limited selection of weapons available for sale. The sword believes that no weapon can outmatch it, and Tsukuru ponders the concept of an equivalent exchange. Tsukuru inquires about rice availability in the market and is directed to the Saddle General's store for it. Upon reaching the store, he is welcomed by a charming girl with ears who guides him to the rice section. The sword observes Tsukuru appearing smitten at first glance, though he refutes it by mentioning his prolonged isolation from social interactions. Sword mentions that if Tsukuru is interested in her, he can purchase her due to her wearing a slave necklace. The girl displays various types of rice and reveals their origins, but Tsukuru interrupts to inquire specifically about the rice species. He identifies Japanese and egg rice and buys ten bags. The shop owner, Saddle, approaches him, acknowledging the significant purchase Tsukuru made. Saddle inquires if this is Tsukuru's first visit to the store, to which Tsukuru responds that he was there the day before. The owner offers to deliver Tsukuru's goods to the inn, or load them onto a wagon. The owner receives a call from a girl named Tsukuru, who mentions that the rice doesn't need to be delivered, and makes it disappear with a gesture. Saddle? The girl inquires about a large capacity box and offers to purchase various items, including slaves. Tsukuru observes that most of the slaves are ordinary individuals. Saddle explains that these slaves are legally protected and guides Tsukuru to a room. Saddle questions if Tsukuru is interested in slaves, encourages him to be open about it, and invites him to inspect the room. This room houses criminal slaves, typically acquired for combat or hazardous situations. Saddle expresses concern that the quality of slaves is declining due to the arrival of thieves and murderers. This allows individuals who have engaged in criminal activities to contribute to society in ways that the general public may not be willing to do. Saddle directs Tsukuru's attention to one of the girls, recounting how she ended up there today. She previously served as a sorceress in a nobleman's household, where a child was tragically killed. Due to her proximity to the crime scene, she was accused. When Tsukuru inquires whether Saddle believes she was involved, Saddle confesses he is unsure. Saddle, a close friend of the girl's late father who passed away two years ago, has known her since birth and attests to her kind nature. Following her father's passing, she resided in a noble's residence and is currently facing murder allegations. Tsukuru recollected his past and noted the parallels between their circumstances. Saddle requests Tsukuru to purchase a girl named Kana, but Tsukuru declines as she prefers not to drag others into her quest for revenge. Saddle warns that Kana will face execution unless taken by Tsukuru. Kana, on the other hand, wishes to be acquired by a man named Dokom. Sword persuades Tsukuru by mentioning that the man appears rude and is dressed like a magician, suggesting it would benefit Tsukuru to have an assistant slave. Dokom advises Saddle to address the man first and then Tsukuru, as the man is more significant. Tsukuru explains that he and Saddle were already in a conversation before Dokom's arrival and decides to purchase Kana for 100 million gold. Dokom becomes upset and claims he will be the one to buy Kana. Saddle intervenes, pointing out that Tsukuru had agreed to buy Kana before Dokom. Dokom, enraged, grabs Tsukuru by his cloak, questioning how someone like Tsukuru could be disrespectful to him.
