SAR images can be used to monitor deforestation. Different polarization modes have different sensitivities to scattering types. HV and VH modes show brighter images for forests and darker images for deforestation. HH mode shows darker images for forests and brighter images for bare soil. For more details, read the paper. We can also use SAR images to monitor the deforestation. As I mentioned previously, the scattering type from the tree or forest is foreign scattering. The scattering type from the bare soil is surface scattering. Remember, different polarization modes have their sensitivity of the different scattering types. The polarization mode HV and VH have more return power from the volume scattering. So we can see brighter SAR images in HV and VH if they are forest. And the SAR images in HV and VH become darker if deforestation happens. Polarization mode HH has more return power from the surface scattering and less return power from the volume scattering. So we can see darker SAR images in HH more if they are forest. SAR images in HH become brighter if the land is changed to bare soil. You can read the paper for the details.
