The speaker reflects on the passage of time and the toll it takes on them as an old soul. They find solace in writing songs and sharing messages, but feel lonely living inside their own head. Despite this, they acknowledge that they are complicated and not easily understood. They also express a desire for simplicity in life. The speaker believes that their words are inspired by a loving God who can help bear their pain. Sometimes, 30 years feels like a long time, When you're an old soul, and the hours and minutes Have taken their toll. But there are songs to write, and words to weigh, Messages to impart, and things to say. So another song percolates and flows out onto the table, You sigh deeply and for a moment feel stable. If only life could be simple, Cause living in your head is lonely, You keep thinking to yourself, Has anyone ever known me? I could write you a poem, Light-hearted and breezy, But you're complicated, No one can promise easy. Even though you're searching for answers, And we can read the rings in your wood, Although at times you feel ancient, An old soul can be understood. There are more songs to write, Than souls that need caressing, By keeping your words honest, There is release in confessing. For within you resides a God who is loving, He's the source of your words, The reason they are bubbling. So take His hand, never be alone again, He's older and wiser, And can carry your pain.
