The speaker discusses the concept of a learning project, which can be a simple way for someone to improve their skills and reach their desired goals. The learning project involves focusing on a specific area, such as handling conversations or conflict, and regularly reflecting on what has been learned. This helps to maintain motivation and progress towards the desired outcome. Without a learning project, momentum and motivation can be lost. The learning project serves as a bridge between coaching sessions and allows for ongoing growth and improvement. It requires time and effort, but ultimately leads to increased motivation and success. Now the learning project can be very simple. So let's let's just make an assumption that somebody wants to become a manager. The learning project can be as simple as, okay what are some of the barriers for you becoming a future first-time manager? And if somebody says handling conversations or conflict. The learning project can be as simple as every week I want you to come in with an example of what you learned about conflict and maybe a conversation that didn't go as well as you would like. The learning project is tied to something that they need to pursue to improve to travel the road to get to their desired spot, their endgame. The learning project can be as simple as that. A learning project is something that bridges the conversations together. It creates that continuity between them especially when it comes to motivation. Now if you don't prescribe a learning project between coaching sessions, you run the risk of momentum being solved with this thing that needs momentum called motivation. So the minute you do that and you focus on a particular area and let's use this hypothetical of you know tough conversations, guess what happens? They start to realize they're progressing, they're getting better, their motivation goes up. You are not going to have a conversation with someone on conflict one time and say well now they can handle conflict. It's going to require knowledge, you teaching them, teaching them back, practice sessions, situational perspective that you can drive further conversation. It's going to take time. The learning project ignites everything. It drives the next coaching conversation such as well Janet last week I asked you to come in with two conversations, one where you were successful as it relates to conflict and one that you felt it could have gone better. Then you start your questions and your activities. That learning project creates that continuity and momentum and more importantly the focus to the area they need to improve as it relates to their motivation and their ideal state and destination.
