solo in every single one of these songs And it's something I will live and die by So the Lenny Kravitz thing kind of came about because I play guitar when I play live I play electric I'm a lead player I like to get up there in the vocal register sing a little louder and pump that volume a little bit on the guitar You mix equal parts of Chris Tableton, Otis Redding, Leonard Skinner, Blackberry Smoke and the Black Crows that you mentioned That's all good stuff I'm one of those people that I take influences from everywhere I was fortunate enough to be brought up by two musicians My mother is a child of the 70s So her record collection was all Skinner, D.B. Top, Queen, Bad Company, Zeppelin And then my dad is a jazz horn player by trade And that was all blues That's where I really connected So that kind of being mixed with being in Nashville and growing up in Nashville it's become such a melting pot I don't particularly like being cornered into one genre per se I want to pull a soulful vocal delivery like Chris Tableton does I want a big production like Morgan Wallen does and I want big guitars like Lenny Kravitz and maybe sometimes even some funk from Prince He was a musical genius, wasn't he? Gosh, man I'm like a Prince freak, right? I've even got a purple guitar on my wall right now I got to go see Paisley Park for the first time which was his recording studio dance studio compound and that made my life That's awesome Now you've been a Nashville recording artist for 20 years and you kind of mentioned it I guess you grew up in Nashville, too? Yeah, sure did I have been there many times We haven't been since about 2018 It's about time to go back I know there's been a lot of changes and growth just in that last six years Yeah, man It's been insane to watch the city grow because I remember as a kid it was just music growing That was kind of it There wasn't much food There wasn't much really anything We've had a huge influx of chefs come to town like Sean Brock and he's opened up a ton of restaurants and the food scene has exploded and the music scene has really diversified It's funny because you have a lot of these classic venues that were, some of them closed down some of them reopened some of them moved due to the pandemic but oddly enough you've had all these smaller suburban neighborhoods pop up and they all have local bars they all have local restaurants and they all want live music so in a way the growth has really allowed access to a lot more people to share music with My first experience with it was back in 08, a buddy of mine his son was recording a CD at the time and he was 17 and we went there for about a week or two and it was really a neat experience because you got to see these guys come into Losers Bar and Grill and back then they would bring a notepad and everything and their guitars they would sit at the bar, order a drink maybe a beer or something like that and write music all day I thought, what a cool way to make a living and you've been doing that in some writers rounds in Nashville as well and for a couple of years you were the lead guitarist for country music artist Chase Rice that's cool I started off doing pretty heavy rock music and there really wasn't a market for that in Nashville and then I started doing more southern based rock in a band called Blackwater James and that got some attention even got some attention overseas we started to chart in places like UK, Germany and France and we just had a blast but you know things kind of ran it's course and I was lucky enough to get picked up by Chase for about a couple years and I had the opportunity to play with him and the pandemic kind of hit and well it didn't kind of hit it hit and it kind of refocused what I wanted to do I was at home a lot, I had two girls I had one in the middle of it in April so I got two young kids and just getting time alone with them and getting time to think and kind of reposition what I wanted to do and the writing thing started to pop up and I started writing a lot more, like daily multiple times a day I'd meet up with writers over Zoom and then when everything got lifted it just, I had all this material and it's been awesome, I kind of set up a studio in my house and I was able to start recording music more and now I'm at a point where I'm trying to release essentially one single every, you know, three to six weeks There you go, that's what keeps you on the radio, you know, even the big name artists do that, the Luke Bryans, the Carrie Underwoods, the Luke Combs, all those guys and you know, they're keeping something fresh out there for the folks to listen to on the radio and that's what keeps you on there and that'll be, that'll work the same way here, you keep pitching me something new, we'll not only play it on the radio we'll do more of these interviews, I've interviewed some artists, same artist five, six times, so it's always a pleasure to bring you back on Awesome, thank you And I love this interview so far, you're high energy just like me, I love it Man, I'll call Dave on this Absolutely, we can do that about music, can't we? You've also had some productions that have been in films, independent films, I don't want to butcher the title, so tell us about that Is that one by Michael Madsen? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, so one great thing about writing, you know, being in Nashville and how things just kind of progress and you're meeting people I got hooked up with these two great writers Shane Grove and David Wade and they also, well Shane also does acting on the side so he kind of got this in with some great production companies and they were doing this film called The Wraith Within and it's a horror movie that has Michael Madsen in it and they needed two tracks, so we got to writing this other incredible vocalist and songwriter from Australia Greta Ziller, she co-wrote the songs, she did the vocals and I produced the track along with co-writing and then that kind of opened the door for the song American Made and American Made is essentially featured in the opening scene of the movie American Outlaws, which was Treat Williams' last movie, so it just came out last year, or they just completed production last year, but that song felt so cool, I'm like, you know what I'm just going to go ahead and release it, so that was my first solo release was American Made, which I think you're going to play at night. Yeah, absolutely and, you know, that's what gets you into other nominations of awards like Emmys and Oscars and all that kind of good stuff isn't it, when you get in a movie Man, I'll take them, I'll take them There you go Yep, and so, you know and I play a lot of artists that have also been Grammy nominated or actually won Grammys, you know, and I think that is just the coolest thing because you know, we're all trying to get heard, my voice gets to introduce your music and your music gets to go out to the rest of the world and ten radio stations are going to play it tonight, so that is cool. Love that. Yeah absolutely. You also have another neat project going on with a gentleman by the name of Way Jennings and folks, if they don't know who he is he's the grandson of the late great Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessie Coulter and I have some of his music too he is fantastic. Tell us about that, it's called Jekyll and Hyde I believe Absolutely, yeah, so Way Jennings is releasing his first full length album called Jekyll and Hyde and I was able to partner with Shane Grove and David Wade to write the song Hotter in Texas, which I believe is track 7 or 8 but what's so cool about it is that, you know, me kind of being that you know, guitar player focused kind of guy songwriter, you know the Way and his folks I think were talking about you know, we need kind of a banger on this, a little bit of a rock track Southern Rock, DZ Top Leonard Skinner that sort of vibe, and David was like, hold on I got a guy, and he immediately called me up and was like, hey we want like a DZ Top kind of vibe and I was like, you got 20 minutes let's knock this out and we all got on on a Zoom call had my electric plugged in and I just started riffing and we were like okay, well that's it, that's the riff and we were lucky enough that he picked that to add to his full length so I mean, I'm just absolutely over the moon about being included on that amazing track, I mean I'm a huge fan of Way, I'm a huge fan of Waylon I mean, Looking Back Texas is probably like my favorite country song of all time so, and then I'm a huge fan of Shooter as well, Shooter Jennings is one of my favorites Electric Rodeo is probably I don't know, like number one or number two favorite country albums of all time I was selling insurance back in, gosh, the early 2000s, 2007 I believe it was, and we were working in Whitefield, Texas and we come across the store, it had a liquor store attached to it as well, but we weren't there for that, we were just there because of the gentleman that owned that store, he's Waylon Jennings' uncle, and he had all this Waylon Jennings memorabilia in there, and man, he was just really a neat guy to visit with, and get to relive some of those good old Waylon stories, and Shooter was out on the road at the time we didn't get to meet him, but that was a great experience Awesome, yeah, I believe it Yeah, it is a lot of fun meeting him American Made, you mentioned the song we're going to play it first for you tonight tell us about this one Alright, so American Made was my first solo single and this was written and produced for the film American Outlaws, directed by Sean McEwen, starring Treat Williams and the cool thing about this song, along with the other two, is that I actually play all the instruments I handled all the instrumentation, I handled all the recording, so these songs you're going to hear tonight including American Made, they are a true labor of love. Minnie Pearl We went to Nashville to Ralph Emery And they put us on the front row of his show And, uh Marie Osmond was on there that night And we didn't know it And Ralph came out in the audience like he used to And he said, I understand Kathy Williams Has something for me And she said, yeah, and she handed him the portrait she did And he said, what do I got to do in return Well, my husband wants to hug Marie Osmond And I looked up on the stage And she motioned for me to come up there And before he could turn around, lickety split I was up on that stage Getting me some sugar That is awesome You mentioned the Osmonds, they had a theater here too For many years, I've interviewed Nathan Osmond He's a great artist And then I just recently met Jay Osmond At the Piercero Theater He's bringing his show back to Branson So that's going to be fun Very popular Now, you and your wife have been married for 45 years Come this October Congratulations on that 45 years She was a bottle fetter I had to bottle feed her People laugh at me when I say that But I was a senior and she was a freshman And then I had to wait until she got out of high school To get married But yeah, we've been together for 45 years We'll be We've been together 49 years We've been married 45 years Now I'm getting on up I'm 65, I shouldn't tell my age But I just recently started singing again And I do the 2 or 3 days a week at nursing homes And retirement homes and veteran homes Went to Colorado To the Colorado State Veterans Home For free and I sang for them And I've been all over East Texas Tyler Singing at veteran homes We've been to Arkansas I love the smiles I love to make people happy That's what I do I do a lot of Jim Reeves Eddie Arnold Marty Robbins Little George Strait And a little of my own music They just love it I imagine I love it too And I'm sure glad we made the connection Because I love to play original music But you've got some great traditional country music And Texas Proud The first song I ever heard from you Is going to lead off tonight So I'm excited to play that for the folks too Now you did, you lived in Branson For quite some time And then moved back to Lufkin, Texas And that's where you're originally from And I play another artist from Lufkin In fact I'm on him and his buddy's record label Called LakeParadiseRecords.net And he's my good buddy Flint Thompson And you've known him since he was a little baby or a kid I lived in a little community Just south of Lufkin Called Homer, Texas And down the road was a place Called Bald Hill, Texas And Flint Thompson's dad Was a year or two older than me But when I was a kid We rode the bus together to school Right out of Lufkin And Flint's folks are from Bald Hill, Texas And I was from Homer, Texas Which used to be the county seat Of Angelina County But I've been knowing Flint Since I was a little boy I mean literally And when he first started singing around here And he had a song come out Called My Time With You Which is a beautiful song And I've just been knowing him for a long time There's been a lot of people From around this area Done pretty good In the music business That's awesome He got a record deal Or offered a record deal He's done quite well in country music And we got to meet him finally In Willow Springs, Missouri We went over there, him and Doug Were doing an awards show together And Flint was performing that night Finally got to meet him in person Just such a great guy And we're lifelong friends now And I've been playing his music For probably I'd say almost 10 years now And this song that he's got Is a tribute to the Shriners Hospital And 100% of the proceeds go to the Shriners For children with cancer Love to the Rescue By Flint Thompson Is a smash hit song You know there's another old boy From about 30-40 miles down the road from me That started out over around Groveton, Texas And started singing And he's doing real well Cody Johnson Yeah he is, I played him when he was an independent artist too And now look at him And he sold out NRG Stadium Down there in Houston As an independent artist And still to this day nobody has done that In the independent world I'll tell you a story, my youngest son We were going to Cowboy Church And we were going over to The guy that was the rodeo coach For Sam Houston University And we were going over there on Thursday nights To practice And Cody Johnson used to come over there And him and my son And the other boys, Cody was trying to be a bull rider And my son was trying to be saddle bronc And Cody would come out there And we would just stand around And he was just like anybody else He wasn't even really pursuing music at the time He wanted to be a bull rider I interviewed another artist By the name of Mo Bandy Here just recently I'm sure you know Mo He lives just down here in Reed Springs, Missouri He was a bull rider, Branson And that's what he used to do He was a sheet metal worker and a bull rider I told him, I said you wanted to do something That lasted a little bit longer than 8 seconds So you started making these 3 minute songs You know when I moved to Branson I went to work at First Community Bank Of Taney County Mo Bandy was one of our customers there At the bank I worked at I'm sure you've heard of First Community Bank I have Downtown Branson I told you so when I interviewed Mo Because I did not know he lived here And was this close I told him we've got to get together and have lunch You used to perform at the Golden Corral That sounds good to me We could meet there for sure When I moved up there He had just had a major heart attack And I think he might have had some open heart surgery But he wasn't in real good health At that time I hardly believe he's 80 years old He is now We got you on New Music Friday And we're going to play For the folks that haven't heard it Texas Proud Let's talk about this one Tell us the story behind it You know there was a guy That got started out His name was Tommy Allen And he lived in Nashville for a long time Used to be roommates with Mel Tillis And several like that And I met up with Tommy Through Gene Strohman And through Joey Riley When I was singing at the Wiley Opry Up in Wiley, Texas And Joey came on to play for Mickey Gilly And Gene Strohman went on to the Pine Mountain Jamboree there In Pine Bluff, Arkansas And I heard that song Texas Proud That Tommy Allen had written And I just loved it And believe it or not Some of the guys playing on there Are part of the old Bob Wills band The guys playing Fiddle on there Is one of the Most famous fiddle players That there ever was And he's gone now And his name is slipping away from my mind Johnny Gimble Johnny Gimble's playing fiddle on Texas Proud Probably played on all of George Strait's Original stuff Amarillo by Morning and all that And I got some of those guys on that album That is awesome Man, when you got good people like that in your corner The magic happens, doesn't it? Yeah, and one guy playing still on there He had played for Buddy Holly And Rizzi Way back then And I had two or three of them on there That was old legendary They were all up in their 70's That played played on there That was with the old Bob Wills Band Now after you left Branson You moved back to Texas You had a tractor supply and an ATV dealership For about 15 years And you had stopped singing But back in November of 2022 You started back and singing like you mentioned At these veterans homes And independent and assisted living centers And nursing homes all over East Texas Arkansas and Colorado too So you've been traveling quite a bit Since you got back into singing it sounds like Just had A sister of mine, a counselor Called me and said, John I want you to buy my house So we had just sold our place I bought her home and she said One thing, I'm going into Pinecrest Retirement home and I want you to come sing For us So I took my old equipment down there And it was popping and spitting And spurring And I sang for them So the first thing you know The activity director went to a meeting And told them about me And my phone started ringing So I went and bought me one of these new little systems With a little tower system With a little base It looked like a stove pipe Nowadays a telephone sounds better Than my old sound system You can get sounds better on your phone Had that good old crackle of a 33 EP that we used to play Those old 33 vinyl records They always sounded pretty crackly This system weighs 28 pounds I bought me a little cart And I put all my music I used to do it with a band But you can't do this for free All over the place and pay anybody So I put all my tracks on my computer And my wife goes with me And sits behind me and does the music And I do it all for free For the folks And we go around and we just have a ball And the love we get And the smiles and the folks I gotta tell you a story I was singing at a home the other day When I got through After I started singing she raised her head She was sitting there in the wheelchair She sang every word I sang Of Jim Reeves, Eddie Arnold When I got through The activity director came up and said John I want to tell you something I said uh oh I did something wrong She said no She said that lady in the wheelchair She said she's been in here six months And she hasn't spoken a word Since she's been in here And sang every word Music, Tim, and you know this Music is unbelievable Therapy for people Yes, I say it all the time And that's why the artists write the music Because they not only get therapy for themselves Putting their heart and soul out there And getting that relief But it also helps other people That are going through a similar situation And when that song becomes a classic Like you just mentioned People never forget that They may not know all the words But they'll remember that song As soon as they start hearing it played on the radio They said she hadn't spoken Since she'd been in there And I went over and started talking to her And she said my husband and I Used to listen to Jim Reeves When we would go down to get a hamburger She just started talking to me And I started talking to her And I hugged her and put my arm around her And I had another guy from the United Kingdom Over in Scotland, John Walker He worked in a facility With the severe folks That would try to hurt themselves Cut themselves And he said they started putting earphones on them And playing Jim Reeves And Eddie Arnold music to them And that rate fell 50% From what they had Of people trying to hurt themselves And he said it's unbelievable And that's what I want to say To all your folks out there All these independent artists singing That you don't realize The impact that you're having And Kim Kelly The impact you're having on people's lives By keeping the music And sharing the music It is amazing Absolutely and it's a pleasure to do it And I know it's a pleasure for you to do what you do And you still sing two or three times a week In these senior centers And things like that So God bless you man You're doing a great, great thing We put on antique car shows for them Every once in a while We put on one the other day And boy they love to come out and see the old cars And they get a kick out of it That's the next thing I was going to talk about You love classic music That is definite classic country music But you also love classic cars And you've got I think seven of them That said up to date right now And you just bought another one But you've got a 58 model Studebaker That my grandpa used to have It's either white or cream color And I love those old cars too man That is cool It's just something about them It's just a passion for me You know a lot of guys deer hunt Or bass fish And that's not my thing My old cars are just my passion And you know a lot of guys The kill of going out deer hunting Finding these old cars I like to find these Really unusual ones I had one Nash The man was 96 years old And he had owned it 45 years And I like things unusual And things that are You just don't see these cars 58 Studebaker Silverhawk Packards I love Packards And Hudson's and Nash Things like that That is awesome I love that too And I love when you post the pictures of them And it's kind of orange and white And the same colors as Whataburger And you put it right under the Whataburger sign That was cool It's a 59 Dodge And a man put a 383 V8 in it And it's a bad boy That is awesome I love that You've got a lot of cool stuff to talk about We about it I pray his dad got sick a while back And I had me and all my fan club people Praying for his dad He's on my Randy Plummer's and the John Williams fan club Josh Jackson Jim Reeves' secretary The only secretary he ever had And their Genie C.
