The valves in the heart ensure blood flows in one direction to prevent backflow. They can deteriorate with age, causing issues. There are two main types: atrioventricular valves separate atria from ventricles, with the tricuspid on the right side and bicuspid (mitral) on the left side. They close with leaf-like pieces. So the job of the valves is just to make sure that blood goes in one direction. It doesn't go backwards. That's what a valve does. It prevents something from going in an opposite direction. So the heart valves ensure that blood passes through the heart in a one-way forward direction, no regurgitation. Now sometimes the valves don't work that well. They get old and shoddy. And so we'll talk about that when I mention in the next couple of lectures some diseases or problems with the valve. This slide says atria ventricular valves separate the atria from the ventricles. As I mentioned, they have leaf-like layers or pieces that come together to close. Tricuspid valve is in the right atrium to right ventricle. And bicuspid or mitral valve is the left atrium and left ventricle that connects the two.
