The heart has entrance and exit valves. The AV valves receive blood in the heart - tricuspid on the right side, mitral on the left. AV valves have leaflets - tricuspid has three, mitral has two. Semilunar valves are exit valves - pulmonary from right ventricle, aortic from left ventricle to aorta. The largest artery is the aorta, and the largest vein is the vena cava. Okay, the valves of the heart. The entrance valves of the heart are the AV valves. So that just means that these are the valves within the heart that receive blood from somewhere. So the right AV valve takes that blood that comes in from the right atrium and then goes down into the right ventricle. The left AV valve connects the left atrium and left ventricle and of course that blood is coming into the heart from on the right side from the body being returned to the heart from the body. And then the left AV valve receives blood from the left atrium that gets its blood from the lungs. Okay, and remember if you just look at the images as I explain this it will make a lot more sense. Just remember that the AV valves are the ones that are inside of the heart. So the right side is the tricuspid valve and the left one is the mitral valve. Some call it the mitral valve or bicuspid valve. And that just means leaflets. So the tricuspid valve has three leaflets or three little floppy leaflets I guess. Bicuspid is two and so it only has two little leaflets that open and close and that's the mitral valve. All right, the semilunar valves are the exit valves. So these are the ones that allow the blood to exit the heart and go to both the lungs and the body. So the pulmonary valve receives blood from the right ventricle and the aortic valve receives blood from the left ventricle to be sent out through the aorta and to the body. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. Remember I said that the largest vein in the body is the vena cava, superior and inferior. It's all one vein. It's just where they join.
