The chapter focuses on the cardiovascular system, with an emphasis on the heart and its positioning in the thorax. The heart is located in the mediastinal space between the lungs and is slightly to the left due to the left lung having two lobes. The apex of the heart is at the bottom, not the top, and the base is considered the wider, superior part. The mediastinum also contains other structures like the esophagus, thymus, lymph nodes, trachea, and vessels. Although this chapter is titled the cardiovascular system, I'll spend most of my time talking about the heart and the great vessels of the heart. I will spend a little bit of time talking about arteries and veins. So let's take a look at the heart and where it's located within the thorax. You can see it's sitting there between the two lungs in the mediastinal space. Some call it mediastinal space. The mediastinum is a membranous space that kind of contains the heart. It also contains parts of the esophagus as it travels down through the thoracic cavity into the abdominal cavity. It contains parts of the thymus, what's left of the thymus, lymph nodes, the trachea, and some the vessels of course. The heart sits a little bit to the left of the sternum because that's where the lung is. The left lung has only two lobes making space for the heart and you can see that the right lung has three lobes because the heart sits more to the left. The apex of the heart, although it's at the bottom as opposed to what you would typically think of an apex as the top of something, it's really the point of the heart. The more pointier part of the heart sits inferior as the base of the heart is considered the superior part of the heart. It's the wider part of the heart.
