Other fires are burning in the Grampians, all are believed to have been sparked by dry lightning. Soaring temperatures are likely in the Greater Sydney region today. Highs of 40 degrees are expected in the city and 42 for the west. Severe heatwave warnings are in place for other parts of NSW, including the north and central west and the Hunter. Meantime, Queensland's north is facing more rain. The Weather Bureau's Miriam Bradbury says the wet weather will last a few days. Areas north of Mackay on the Queensland coast could receive moderate rainfall at times this week, with the heaviest and most persistent falls between Cooktown and Eyre, where several hundred millimetres of rain are possible between now and Friday. Flash flooding and riverine flooding are both possible this week around the north tropical coast. The Federal Government says a new employment initiative for people with disability will start within weeks. Shannon Kirkwood has more. The employment rate for people with disability has barely changed over 30 years and is double that of those without disability. From March, a $22 million Disability Employment Centre of Excellence will work with employment service providers to create and share best practice resources and training. It will be run by Swinburne University of Technology, working with people with disability and peak bodies. Last year, the Government pledged to overhaul disability employment programs. Better access to medical services, more local health services and shorter waiting times. That's what rural Australians are calling for ahead of the Federal election. Laura Devoy has more. The Rural Doctors Association of Australia is urging the Federal Government and Opposition to prioritise long and short term action on rural health. It's proposed a five point plan to improve access to medical services in rural areas. It includes training more rural doctors, getting more specialists, building more workplaces, helping medical parents stay in the workforce and plan for the future. The Association says a National Rural Health Strategy, coordinated by the National Rural Health Commissioner, is needed to enable outcomes from recent reviews to be considered in the rural context and progressed in ways that actually work for communities. The Victorian Government is defending a limited trial of ticketless public transport. Critics say it's a gimmick, with the trial limited to four bus routes in the town of Wangaratta. However, people using their credit cards to travel on NSW public transport could be forced back onto Opal cards unless the ageing system is replaced, Hope Media's Jefferson Shaw reports. Currently, commuters using public transport can pay with a credit card or mobile phone on the 25,000 electronic Opal readers across the network. The Herald reports a highly confidential business case warns financial institutions may refuse to keep certifying the rapidly ageing ticketing system. The business case is found an upgrade for the Opal system, which is overdue, would cost $568 million. It warns delays increase the risk of software failure and could force the more than half of people who pay using credit card back to Opal. In sport, the Australian venue for the 2027 Rugby World Cup are due to be announced this week. Sydney is expected to host the major fixtures with matches for Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Newcastle. There's speculation Melbourne and Canberra will miss out. regarding NDIS No, excuse me regarding disability issues from across the globe and first off let's start with things close to home where Neil Danaha has been named 2025 Australian of the Year Neil, who is living with motor neurone disease, has been honoured as the 2025 Australian of the Year for his significant contributions through the FIPE MND Foundation. His recognition presents an opportunity to shift the national conversation about the NDIS emphasising its benefits and human impact. Additionally from Australia concerns over the NDIS reforms recent reforms to the NDIS have generated anxiety amongst the disability community. Changes affecting funding and support structures have led to fears of losing essential services. Advocates are calling for more meaningful consultation and clearer communication from the NDIA, which is the National Disability Insurance Agency. In the United Kingdom, the Assisted Dying Bill is under scrutiny. Kim Leadbeater, the architect of the Assisted Dying Bill is negotiating potential amendments amidst allegations of excluding opposing voices The Terminally Ill Adults End of Life Bill is under committee review with discussions focusing on safeguards and the inclusion of diverse perspectives including those from disability groups. Over to the US now. The Supreme Court is to address disability discrimination in schools. The US Supreme Court is set to consider a case focusing on the standards students must meet to bring claims of disability discrimination in educational settings. This discussion could have significant implications for the enforcement of disability rights in schools. Also in the US, Social Security Administration streamlines the SSI application process. The Social Security Administration is implementing changes to simplify the application process for Supplemental Security Income, which is SSI, aiming to make it more accessible for individuals with disabilities seeking financial assistance.
