Thousands of nurses and midwives in New South Wales are striking for a 15% pay increase. The Nurses and Midwives Association rejected a 3% pay rise offer from the government and are committed to fighting for their cause. In other news, the severity of cancer diagnoses in regional areas of Australia is highlighted on World Cancer Research Day. Over 400 Australians are diagnosed with cancer daily, with higher rates in regional areas. The Australian Cancer Research Foundation is raising funds to tackle this issue. In international news, intense Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon have resulted in over 490 deaths, including many women and children. Hezbollah retaliated with rockets fired into northern Israel. Finally, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has won his second AFL Brownlow medal. National Radio News. Good morning, I'm Tessie Norris. Thousands of NSW nurses and midwives are walking off the job for 24 hours today in pursuit of a pay rise. The Nurses and Midwives Association is calling for a 15% pay increase after rejecting the State Government's offer of an interim 3% pay rise back paid to July 1st. The Association's President O'Bray Smith told the ABC they're committed to fighting for the cause for at least another year. If we don't strike today, if we don't get 15%, your health system will be in decline. So we're asking for the community, hear us, help us, so that we can deliver safe care for you. The NSW Health Minister Ryan Park says despite the strikes, emergency departments will continue to operate around the state. If you do need to call Triple O, continue to call Triple O, those emergency departments will remain functioning and in place. The severity of cancer diagnoses in regional parts of Australia is being highlighted this World Cancer Research Day. It comes as figures reveal nearly 450 Australians are diagnosed with cancer every day, with two in five diagnosed before the age of 85. As part of the day, hundreds of Aussies are set to cut, colour and shave their hair in a show of solidarity while raising vital funds for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. The Foundation's Carly Dutois says diagnosis rates are often higher in regional and remote parts of the country and more needs to be done to tackle this. There are certain types of cancers where we do have larger instances in regional and remote areas and that's for a number of reasons. So I think it is really important to take an Australia wide and in particular regional focused approach to the work that we fund and that's something that we take into account each year when we look at our research funding. Briefly, investigations remain ongoing after a man was fatally stabbed in Sydney's inner west overnight. The man, aged in his 30s, was stabbed on the footpath in Marrickville just before 8pm. Paramedics treated the 32-year-old but he died at the scene as the search continues for his alleged attacker. Overseas, Lebanon's health ministry is reporting at least 492 people have been killed in intense and wide-ranging Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah. It marks the deadliest day of conflict in Lebanon since 2006. Lebanon's health ministry said 35 children and 58 women were among the dead while 1,600 others had been wounded. Hezbollah, meanwhile, launched more than 200 rockets into northern Israel according to the military. Paramedics said two people were injured by shrapnel. In sport, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has won his second AFL Brownlow medal, pulling a record 45 votes to claim the honour. The 29-year-old is the first player to win two Brownlows playing for Carlton after he also won the game's most prestigious individual honour two years ago. Cripps says it's one of his best seasons yet. One year is my most consistent year. You know, I go to work on my game in the last few years I need to really go to work on kind of show off the shadow of the game sitting calm. Collingwood's Nick Dacoff finished second on 38 votes while Port Adelaide's Zach Butters polled 29th for third place. We've played that one before haven't we played that I think on episode three or so but we love that track don't we do? Yeah. Was your dad involved with the making of that song? Um I don't think so. No don't think so okay um now where are we now on last week's episode we were joined by Bailey Stephenson who works for Good Starts in Life. He came in to tell us all about their precious plastics initiative which helps get Cairns locals with disabilities into the workforce and some much-needed work experience. It took me a little while to get my act together but the show is now up online if you missed it listen back at audio.com forward slash the empower hour we have all of our past episode recordings published on there so do yourself a favour and go and have a listen about uh to that. Bizarrely enough in a in a weird twist of fate we had Bailey on the show and then he soon left and then we talked about uh another local Cairns local who lives with a disability. His name's Hayden Keeble and he had won a very prestigious award for a movie that he starred in so I spoke about that. Whoa. Yeah very cool spoke about that and then I watched the trailer for the film that he's in and realized that Bailey who had just been sat here opposite us doing the interview is the main character in that film how bizarre is that? Very very bizarre. And I hadn't made the connection so who knows uh I'm going to speak to Bailey and see if him and Hayden want to come in and have a chat about the show. The film is called actually and uh yeah it's produced by a local production company called Yarner and uh yeah amazing. Yarner? Y-A-R-N-E-R. What's coming up next brother? Moving on with the music next up is Stereophonic Staccato. It's this is a song I requested on 92.7 Mexifam on the Sunshine Coast. This is this 2005 hit marked the band's first ever number one single in the UK and it's still a crowd favorite today. Okay here it is let's go. Yes Yes, okay, very cool Now we've got some news There is a bit of activity taking place in the NDIS space at the moment On October 3rd, 2024, new NDIS laws will come into effect following the passage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment Bill in August This legislation, known as the Getting the NDIS Back on Track Bill aims to strengthen the scheme and improve the experience for participants In the lead up to the changes, it's business as usual Until October, participants should continue using their plans as they have and providers should claim for support according to current guidelines Once the new laws are in place, participants will start seeing changes including how eligibility is assessed, the types of supports that can be funded and how plans and funding are managed These reforms are designed in collaboration with the disability community to ensure that participants remain at the heart of the NDIS New NDIS rules will be rolled out gradually allowing for more personalised and flexible support over time Head to the NDIS website if you want or need more info DJ Jesse, what's the plan, dude? What's up next?
