The speaker discusses the legacy and impact of basketball coaches such as Bobby Knight and John Calipari. They argue that Bobby Knight was a dominant figure in the sport and should not be overshadowed by more recent coaches. They also mention the importance of considering different eras of college basketball. The speaker expresses frustration with disrespectful comments and suggests discussing other topics like football. They also touch on the overrepresentation of backup quarterbacks and interim head coaches. The conversation turns to the inconsistency of some coaches and the upcoming games featuring lesser-known quarterbacks. The speaker expresses a desire to discuss the success of the Dallas Cowboys but feels that they are not allowed to do so. Roll em. One. When my time on earth is gone and my activities here are passed, I want them to bury me upside down so my critics can kiss my This is Thought Tackle presented by Forkast.Media Everybody else is, but I'm, I mean, he was, he's one of the greatest basketball sports coaches, period, ever. And I just think, you know, you know, over time, I think people remember not how great of a coach he is, but some of the other stuff. But I don't, you know, it just depends on who you ask. Like, I don't feel like the other stuff overshadows the great. I think, and what do you mean? College basketball, for sure, for sure. For sure. He got an undefeated season under his belt. I mean. Now that's it. How many national championships has Dean Smith got? I mean, I hear you. I think, I think Bob Knapp's right there in that conversation. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. But we're not talking about rings. We're also talking about impact. We're also talking about legacy. You got to realize Coach K played for Bobby Knight. Like, you got to understand this. Like, it's not just, and you're talking about at a time where the college basketball landscape was much different than it became. The college basketball landscape that Bobby Knight coached under was a lot more competitive environment. It was a lot more parity. But he was that strong of a coach to be able to develop a program at Indiana that allowed him to be there even far past when people felt like, hey, man, we probably need to let coach go. But he was such a legend there that you couldn't because he had done so much already. You can't take away what he's done. It's just, you know, college basketball was different then. John Calipari got one ring, man. John Calipari got one ring. No, no, impact. So, are we really arguing that Bobby Knight didn't change the game of basketball? See, this is recency bias. You got to look at what was this man doing in the 70s and 80s? Like, everybody forgets that era of basketball, but he was a dominant figure in the sport, if not the dominant figure in the sport. Yes, y'all are. When you bring up John Calipari in a conversation about Bobby Knight, I feel like that's disrespectful. Now, to talk about a Coach K, I understand. To talk about a John Wooden, I understand. Talk about a Dean Smith, I understand. John Calipari, there's different halls in the Hall of Fame. Bobby Knight and John Calipari ain't on the same hallway. I hear you. Fair, but those are the only ones I would accept a debate on. Too soon, too soon, guys. Guys, the man just died. Come on now. Come on, man. First of all, if you're talking about, first of all, first of all, see, because this is what you do. What you do is you come on this show and you go, you don't know what you're talking about when the data shows that you don't. So, that's number one. And number two, we cannot, like, you have to look at college basketball in the terms of eras. And when I'm talking about Bobby Knight, it's impact on the sport, legacy. Impact on the sport, legacy. And when you look at the last, that whole era of college basketball over the last, like, 20 years, it's very different than what it was in the 90s versus what it was in the 80s and 70s. These are completely different tiers of basketball. That's why I backed off of the Dean Smith situation because when I think of Dean Smith, I think of Dean Smith from the lens of the tail end of his career. But in going and doing research, you realize, oh, you don't understand what Dean Smith was on the come up, which is why I do understand, like, yeah, he's a tier above most of these pretty, if not all of these other coaches. And I do think Bobby Knight is at minimum top five. Minimum top five, though. I'm not, I don't, I don't want to get on the other side of the Calipari coin. I don't want to get on the other side of the Calipari coin because I don't want y'all to be disrespectful to Bobby Knight on this show and get on the other side of the Bobby Knight coin. There's a lot. There's a lot. There's a lot. No, no, y'all being too, y'all being too respectful. I don't think that's a disrespectful statement, though. I don't think that's a disrespectful statement. When I, where I was, where I was cautioning is to go any step beyond that. He's a legend. The man just died. See y'all disrespectful. Like that's that's that's my issue with y'all. Can we talk about something else? Because y'all are y'all were disrespectful. Y'all just are. Hey, listen, when I die, don't talk about me. I don't want y'all to discuss me on this program because I don't, I can't trust y'all with that type of, um, with that type of responsibility. You was like Bobby Knight just died. Great coach. And I've been in Calipari, Calipari. What are we talking about? But anyway, can we talk about football or something else, please? Listen, man, all I want to do is do a sports show with a group of people who can accurately discuss the things that they are qualified to discuss. Can we talk about the games y'all just watch because I feel like y'all can't remember nothing past last week. Not talking to me about John Calipari. What did he do? What what has he done the last three years? The Dallas Cowboys. Are we ready to talk about how good they look? The are we talking about from Kentucky? Yes. Yes. He's a form. He's a basketball player. I think he played for like the Hawks at one point. Like what are we talking about? Why do you why are you bringing them up? Do you know who Isaiah Thomas is? Neither did I watch Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but you just invoke the name of John Woodman's conversation. All right, man. I'm not arguing. I'm not arguing nothing. Y'all the ones talking about John Calipari. I mean, what is he? What has he done? Nor should you be y'all you you disrespectfully throughout Rick Pitino. I only know one thing about Rick Pitino and that's what he does in restaurant. I know he took a lot of women to restaurants to I know that since we talking about impact legacy. Yes. Mm-hmm. I'm just saying. That's the most disrespectful program on Earth. Y'all exactly who Bobby Knight was talking about in that speech. Don't Bobby Knight got a gold medal as a coach of Team USA. Do John Calipari do that have that? No, because he was coaching the Dominican Republic. You know, if you are legendary coach. Because his services were not needed on the Team USA sideline. That's why you know who was coaching that team. That was coach K and what's the man's up at Syracuse Jim Bay? Hi, that's who was coaching Team USA. Long overdue long overdue. Talk a little. You know, one of the top one of the topics they don't like to discuss is representation and I would like to just discuss an area where we are overrepresented number one backup quarterbacks from mediocre quarterbacks that they don't want to get benched. And I would like to just discuss an area where we are overrepresented number one backup quarterbacks from mediocre quarterbacks that they don't want to get benched. I eat the tie rod tails of the world and the yeah types. You know, you know, if you if you got a quarterback, you don't want the fans to boo you get one of us to be the backup quarterback and number two number two is interim head coaches. We know good and well Antonio Pierce, you know, I like him as a from what I know about him. But we know good and well that this man is not going to get a legitimate shot at the Oakland Raiders head coaching job and they just threw this man in here halfway through the season. He might write the ship. He might keep them afloat right now to rate it. Mark Davis. David. Correct. Who's the most who's the most successful coach off that coaching tree? Is it is is it? It's got to be. Yeah, see, so Bill and Brian have some good years at Penn State. He didn't went to the Texas. He didn't start off bad with the Texans. It was just so I think Romeo, Romeo Cornell had like three four coaching jobs. Oh Charlie West. It's Charlie. Why so it's like where is where is Charlie? Why? That's what I was going to ask but I didn't feel like that was appropriate after that first conversation. Because the last thing I remember about Charlie White is him celebrating a victory that didn't happen against the University of Southern, California. Mike Grable is doing well for himself. Oh, he didn't coach for Belichick. He didn't coach linebackers or nothing. Josh McDaniels not had two failed coaching jobs. Wow, that's crazy. Is he still coaching? Where is he now? Last time I remember he was coaching for Kansas. The more, you know, the more, you know, the more, you know, yeah, his life goes. He's been out of yeah. He's been out of coaching since 2014 when he coached at Kansas. That's what's up. And not to mention not to mention they also fired the offensive coordinator in the process to like Jimmy Jimmy Garoppolo hurt. And so they started somebody else at quarterback. I don't know bro. It's a lot of people playing quarterback. This coming week that we don't know who they is. Because because the the Viking the Viking not picked up Dobbs like he wasn't out here just in Arizona last week. The Giants picked up a character from the Sopranos to be a star quarterback this week. Tommy DeVito from Jersey. Come on now. Come on. Never heard of him. Never heard of him. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. But Trevor Lawrence. Yes, Justin Herbert to be determined right now. Yeah. Jalen Jalen hurts. Well, here's the issue. That's what I was going to say that next year that next year you're about to go to a lot of them done got hurt when you look at Kirk Cousins, Matthew Stafford, like these guys have been banged up. Now, we don't know that Prescott. See y'all just to see y'all won't let me talk about what I want to talk about on this show. Y'all spend all this time causing Bobby Knight to roll in his grave and y'all and then you're not going to let me talk about the good name of the Dallas Cowboys. That's crazy. That's crazy, man. Yeah. Not really. They're not but it's not. This is that there's way too much pressure on that one position. The expectation of that position is for you to be elite. Early and you got to look at how many guys have flamed out or riding the pond. Think of how many first-round picks are just kind of like dangling around on benches in the league or are completely out of the league. Sam Donaldson, Sam Donaldson, a first-round pick is a backup quarterback for Brock Purdy. And speaking of third pick in the draft and you got somebody like a Trey Lance third pick in a draft is the third string quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah. At that age. They are probably running the ball. Correct. Correct. First of all, let's let you have quarterbacks. You can build around because when we're talking about tears, like there's only I'm going to say there's one tier one quarterback in the league because he is the tier. Yeah. But here's the thing. How much how much of that are we seeing on the college level? How many of these guys who what quarterbacks are like we would consider dominant quote-unquote at the college level. For example, everybody's telling me that and I wasn't disagreeing with them coming into the season. But now I'm watching the games and I'm like, I mean that boy got a lot of developing to do when you think about Caleb Williams. Then y'all got to stop me. But again, you look at either one of them. I mean, neither of them is dominating the sport. Like when you look at and you're talking about college football. Matt Nagy, Matt Nagy when he was like, we need to trade up and get him. Mm-hmm. And it's also about like how hard it is to play that position. Like even a guy to a good like it's hard to sustain. Like we were like last like this version of Lamar Jackson. We're seeing this year was not the version of Lamar Jackson. We saw last year and it's different than the version. We saw when he won MVP, like he's ebbed and flowed even even yeah right now, but he did. He was not this person last year. I think a lot of people didn't even have Lamar top five at the end of last year. Yeah, if you if we come out of last football season, I would say in no particular order people would have been consensus to say the top five quarterbacks were Mahomes Josh Allen who we didn't mention. We were talking about that top seven Joe Burrow hurts and Herbert. I don't think a lot of people would have had most people would have had Lamar Jackson infiltrating that conversation at the end of last season. And now you look at this season is just like, oh, we were patient with him and he looks like an MVP candidate again. I don't know. As much as one thing about John Lynch, he don't care about them pics man. Like them pics can go like we get who? And you know why? Because the 49 is a playing the compensatory draft game, which a lot of people don't even understand. The NFL has all these rules that will get you extra draft picks and the 49 is take advantage of all of those rules rather. It's hiring minority coaches or what you get back in a trade exchange like and they quickly will trade those pics for more players. So shout out to them. Chase Young is still not on like a big boy contract yet. He's not on that second contract. And so right now he's cheap and you can put that into your win now formula. So shout out to them. Also shout out to the Arizona Cardinals who are also think help win this trade. Josh Dobbs was winning too many games. He had to go. They try to move up in the draft. But both also isn't having like a salary. Cal Shannon. Cal Shannon. I just want to also state that Bobby Knight is fixed all time in wins still so I just want to point that out. This man spent a significant chunk of his career coaching at Army and also racked up wins at Texas Tech, which has never been a powerhouse and was only relevant when he was there. So John Calipari on that wins list is 14. He coached for 42 years, but again, some of that was at Army and Texas Tech. John Calipari was out here spending them checks to get the best recruiting class year after year after year only to not win the championship other than that one year with Anthony David. That's all I'm saying. The level of disrespect, bruh. With the with with with with with with with with with with with with I mean Bobby Knight's win percentage career is 71%. It's not like it's that much worse, but go ahead, but do you sis? Oh good, go ahead. Let me see. How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? How do you burn the key? I was about to say, is there a way to filter that list where it's all post-segregation? Can we go like since 1970-ish? Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Mm-hmm. Never forget. Okay. So they don't even count. Yeah. End it. But this is why you got to address them as a record label and a crew as well. Don't just address the staff. Dabble Sweeney is also the person making all that money who was out here caping for the players should not be paid. This is also Mr. He got to change his tutor if you want to keep his job. Like you can't. You can't be out here in this era of college football where we are going to college football, which is, you know, expanding the playoffs, expanding NIL, expanding the transfer portal. You have to be a coach who's willing to look at these players as brands and not just as kids. And I think that kind of went fundamentally against what Dabble Sweeney stood for initially. But now he's going to have to come around on the whole situation. I'd like to throw a young, but he can get a young button this week, too. And I know I know the community isn't going to like this. But here's the thing, man. You came and you told these kids, I'm bringing my own luggage. And it's Louie. You lied. Your luggage wasn't Louie. Maybe your carry on was. But the rest of your luggage was Jansport. Because a big part of your luggage is your carry on. And now you try to, oh, we got to get some more linemen. That's your job, Dion. That's why I'm calling you Dion. Because you, you, you supposed to be out and get in the players. And if you ain't got him, you're supposed to coach him up. A. A. A. The hood. The hood fickle. We'll be back. We'll be back. A. A. A. The hood. The hood fickle. We'll be back. A. Let him. Let him win two games in a row and see if we ain't back. We'll be right back. And then we'll be back next year. Stay tuned. Cause there's more to see. Unbreakable. And I just want to say they have won 400%, 400% more games than they won last year. And that's all right. He already, he already recruited. He already recruited another five star quarterback. Like he's a, but the thing is you gotta focus like this. Ain't no part-time job. And what I do appreciate about him is he's, he's all in on the coaching thing, but you also have to understand how this game works. You get linemen out of high school. You do not get linemen in the transfer portal. You gotta be out here at you going to have to be somewhere in small town, Pennsylvania, or you're going to have to make a trip out to the middle of nowhere in California, or you're going to have to spend some time looking at some, some film or some players down in Texas. Like this is what it requires in order for you to get these linemen. Like we broke down on this show, like where the linemen actually, or we might've, it might've been a group chat, but we talked about like where the top tier linemen go. Like they all, Oh, like they're all spread out. And you don't always see them. You don't know where that six, four, 200 and something pounder is. You got to look for them. Alabama's and they end up at the same schools. Cause cause Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh, cause you know, Harbaugh got a whole crew. Harbaugh got people out here in disguise at central Michigan games for him. Like he's going the extra mile. Like he's going the extra mile. Like he's going the extra mile. So that wasn't him. You said, man, come on, man. I don't know much, but I know that was him on the side. By that man with the extra mouth, the master of disguise. Because it ain't, because one of my favorite players of all time, Russell Westbrook has been God awful for several years. Other than in the stat sheet. Like, you know, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean,
