A preceptee is a student who learns from an experienced nurse during a clinical preceptorship. They apply classroom theory in practice, improve problem-solving skills, work in a team, and build confidence. They also develop their own nursing identity through clinical experiences. A preceptee is a student who is paired with an experienced nurse preceptor for a one-on-one learning experience during a clinical preceptorship. Preceptees utilize a theory learned in the classroom and attempt to apply it in clinical practice with their best ability. Next, when caring for their patients, the preceptee uses their clinical judgment, seeks out opportunities to improve their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, engages in teamwork, and builds confidence in their nursing practice. Finally, the preceptee is constantly working on defining their own nursing identity. A nursing identity is not innate and it is the various learning experiences that occur in the clinical setting that help to shape it.
