The transcription discusses the controversial topic of Roe v. Wade and argues why it should be codified. It explains that the case legalized abortion as a protected right, but recent rulings have shifted decision-making to the states. The episode will cover why abortion is considered a human right, how state decisions affect marginalized people, and the mental health effects of illegal abortions. It highlights the argument that safe, legal abortions are a basic human right and that illegal abortions increase risks for women. The transcript also includes an interview with a young woman who believes in abortion rights and discusses the mental health effects of being denied an abortion. It argues that the government should not have input on abortions, as men making decisions may not fully understand the impact on women. The discussion emphasizes the need for informed and involved discussions on the topic. In today's day and age, one of the most controversial topics is Roe v. Wade and why it should be codified. Firstly, I want to discuss what the case of Roe v. Wade is about. Roe v. Wade is a landmark decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the right to abortion is protected under the Constitution. Roe v. Wade hit the media intensely recently because only last year was the first ruling overturned and where abortions are legal was turned to the states to decide for themselves. Due to this, we are seeing the rates of illegal abortions plummet rapidly. This is Tessa Suttis from RedWrite1030 and I want to talk to you about why Roe v. Wade should be codified. This episode will cover why abortion should be considered a human right, how leaving the rights up to the state affects marginalized people, and lastly, how illegal abortions can have effects on mental health. I think that when a lot of people think about basic human rights, the first thing that comes to mind is not abortions. However, I want to introduce an article from Human Rights Watch that argues that safe, legal abortions are a basic human right, stating that when abortions are made illegal, it does not reduce the amount of procedures, it just increases the amount of unsafe abortions, in which turn can lead to more deaths of women. I now want to touch on the effects of being denied an abortion and how it can have an effect on mental health, to which I want to introduce my interviewee, Ava. I'm currently here with my roommate. I'm Ava Gregg. I'm 19 years old and I'm a political science major here at the University of Iowa. Thank you. How's your day going? Good. How's yours? Mine's good. Ava, firstly, I want to get your opinion on the topic of abortion itself. Firstly, do you believe in abortion rights? Yeah, so I feel that abortion should be legal everywhere. I feel that it's a topic that the government should not really have an opinion on. Do you understand the effects it can have on a different group of people and a woman's mental health? I do. When abortion rights are reduced, it's extremely unfair to women because some people aren't in the position to have a child. When women are denied abortions, it can also have many effects on the woman's mental health. Ava, have you heard about an article Zara Abrams wrote about abortion and mental health? No, I haven't. Thank you, Ava, for your take on abortion. Lastly, I want to talk about why the government should not have any input on abortions. Because there are so many men on the Supreme Court, it is easy for them to make decisions to deny an abortion. Men are not the ones having the abortion, so they commonly do not put themselves in a woman's shoe. They do not fully understand the effects of forcing a woman to have a baby that is not wanted or a baby that cannot be afforded. An article about John Legend on abortion discusses that when he and his wife miscarried their child, they could not imagine the government having an opinion on that situation. Making a statement claiming that the government being involved on topics like this stuff is nasty and evil, said Legend. This poses an extremely discriminatory effect towards women because making abortions illegal everywhere affects everyone at different rates. Roe v. Wade is easily one of the most discussed topics of our time, and it is time that we stay informed and involved in this topic. While it is very controversial, it is important that we put our personal feelings aside and look at the problem as a whole.
