The speaker discusses how psychologically safe environments and positive relationships between leaders and followers improve patient outcomes, workplace dynamics, and the overall quality, cost, and access to care. Creating a supportive team environment enhances productivity, quality of care, and potentially reduces costs. Conversely, an unsafe environment leads to decreased quality, increased costs, and limited access for patients. Transparency, accountability, and willingness to learn from mistakes are highlighted as crucial components in fostering psychological safety within teams, ultimately benefiting both patients and healthcare professionals. Yeah, and I think to kind of go with that, you know, there's obviously research like we've talked about that back You know greater both patient and just overall workplace outcomes with these psychologically safe environments and these positive relationships between leaders and followers But these also absolutely impact, you know The iron triangle that we like to talk about always the access the quality the cost Of whatever care we're providing and when you have, you know better outcomes and better Just team camaraderie and Psychologically safe environments of all the things we've discussed so far not only are you improving the quality of care, but With productivity standards and output quality and all of that kind of stuff. You you may be improving costs as well And that could could leak into access as well Because you know when you have a team working together Brainstorming, you know how to best serve their clients and and creating environments in which you can challenge each other and And really get what's best Get to get the best of everyone you can improve that access for patients as well So I think it can really have an impact on all those things and yeah It can it can be negative when you have you know on the flip side of that when you have a really Unsafe environment you have really bad team dynamics, you know, that quality is absolutely going to go down for both your patients And just within the workplace that cost is going to go up. You're not going to be able to retain, you know Workers employees any of that and then that access is also going to go down because you know you don't have the support and the team that you need to be able to provide the Things that you need to for patients and clients. I Love that. I feel like also if you are having a Creating a psychologically safe environment for your patients you're not only increasing their access, but you're increasing their willingness to confide in you and to listen to the Information that you're giving them and they'll be more likely to Come with you with any concerns that they're having or any difficulty that they're having and that way You are able to help them even more if they feel comfortable coming to you with those things But if they don't feel safe, then they're not going to bring those things up and their quality of life is not going to be improved like it could be and going off of that team again, like I Think one of my favorite things to tell a client sometimes is if I'm like, you know I don't know but I will figure it out I will ask the people that I need to ask so that you are successful, but I'm not going to Give you an intervention or put you in a scenario that I you know don't know if it's going to work or not unless I have reached out to my team and talked to them and Harvard actually has a study about that that You know that is part of psychological safety is The psychological safety scale so can you ask other team members on your team for help? And if the answer is no that kind of right off the bat says where you're at and so Do you feel comfortable failing and learning from that failure or do you view mistakes as the end-all be-all in a team? Yeah, I'm just going to echo that As well, you know, not just for clients, but in any team That's that's such a huge part of psychological safety that I don't think we've touched on as much but just being transparent If you don't know something that's okay, but just be honest about it, you know And it may be a difficult conversation to have but you have to have that like we're all going to have to have those in practice everyone does Not even just in practice but in everyday life And so being transparent not only with your patients, but also in a team You know if you're asked a question be like to be honest Like I'm not a hundred percent positive on that and I will get back to you with an answer on that but maybe I need to do a little more research or You know, maybe I need to talk to my patient about it or whatever the case may be That's that's so important for creating these safe environments Both creating and maintaining these these safe environments for others and for yourself Is just being transparent and having that transparency and having that That will to just be like, you know, I don't know something and that's okay, but I'm going to figure it out So yeah, I love that you brought that up Taylor for sure Yeah, and also just to kind of bounce off that for a second is you know accountability when you do screw up when you do Make a mistake. Do you come back and own that? Yes, and in our interview with Maria, we also asked her if she had any advice for us as new grads and as students coming to the health care field and I'd like to play her answer because I thought that it was really Impactful and kind of relates to asking questions and not being afraid to communicate with team members
