And today is part two of a four-part series where we are addressing burnout, since we live in such a busy, busy, busy society, and we all have to be so, so busy. So today, we're talking about root causes. We are going to shed some light on the factors that can contribute to this pervasive issue. So obviously, the first root cause of burnout can be an excessive workload. If you are constantly feeling overwhelmed by your never-ending to-do list, if you're working long hours and you don't feel like you're getting, you know, adequate rest or you're taking breaks throughout the day, if you're feeling pressured to meet deadlines that are just unrealistic or even expectations that are unrealistic, that is an excessive workload. That is, you know, definitely one of the root causes of burnout. I've got four major root causes of burnout that I want to list. Of course, that was the first one. The second one that I want to talk about is a lack of control. This one can be tough because we constantly want to remind ourselves that you need to control the controllables, right? You can control your temper. You can control your attitude. You can control your response. But what do you do when you feel like there's a lack of control, when you feel powerless in your work environment, if you're unable to make decisions, if you're unable to influence different outcomes? Also, you know, another lack of control is dealing with micromanagement or a rigid organizational structure that limits your autonomy. And then experiencing a disconnect between your values and the values of your workplace. I've mentioned this several times on this podcast because my goal as a Christian career coach is to help my professional women align their careers with their faith. And oftentimes, I talk to my clients and this is exactly what they are experiencing. They are feeling a big disconnect and that's because your values don't align with your workplace. And so, this is really what is considered a lack of control. It's a situation that you cannot control. The third thing on my list today is a poor work-life balance. If you are struggling to maintain boundaries between work and personal life, and so it leads to these blurred lines and you're constantly available for either your employees or your boss, that can definitely be a contributing factor. That is, you know, definition 101 of a poor work-life balance. Another thing is that if you neglect your self-care and your leisure activities in favor of your work obligations or even your life obligations, your family obligations, if you're not taking the time to take care of yourself and do your self-care, whatever that is, if it's 10 minutes, if it's 30 minutes, if it's three hours at the spa or if it's an overnight trip, a staycation or something like that without your kids, self-care is so important to maintaining that work-life balance. And then if you're also, if you're feeling guilty or anxious whenever you take time off or, you know, if you feel guilty when you do get that self-care, when you're prioritizing your personal well-being, that basically means that you've got a poor work-life balance. My fourth and final root cause of burnout is limited recognition and reward. If you are not being acknowledged or appreciated for your hard work and your contributions, if you're feeling undervalued, if you're not fulfilled in your role despite you putting in significant effort, and this doesn't just have to be about your career, this can be with your family too. If you're a stay-at-home mom and you're not being recognized by your husband for the contributions that you are making to the family unit, to the team, you can also have this feeling as well. And then lastly, of course, if there's a lack of opportunities for growth, for advancement, or any meaningful recognition, then, yes, these can all contribute to your burnout. And these are the four major root causes of burnout. That's the excessive workload, the lack of control, your poor work-life balance, and then your limited recognition and your limited rewards. In Colossians 3, 23, it says, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. This brings me back to the whole aligning your career with your values, with your faith. If your Christian faith is rooted in you as part of your value system, it is going to be extremely difficult to work for a company that does not share those same values. I know from personal experience what that feels like, to not be in alignment with the general manager, with the owner, with my direct boss on different things. And it is such an internal struggle that it does cause this sense of burnout, this sense of unhappiness, not being aligned, not being fulfilled. I definitely was undervalued. I definitely was underrecognized. And that's because, you know, my boss also recognized that we had a different value system. And so, thinking back to this Bible verse, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. It just reminds me that if you're doing what you love, it's never work, right? It never feels like work. It never feels like you have a job if you're doing what you love. If you are in total alignment in your career, it doesn't feel like work. And if you're a Christian who is in a position where you can align your Christian faith, your value system with your work, then you're doing what the Bible tells us to do. And God is proud of you for that. And you're probably one of the lucky ones because so many people want to be in your shoes. They aspire to be in your shoes one day because it is a very tough situation to feel that way. But, you know, this verse, it also reminds me that just the importance of being dedicated to our work and it highlights that need for balance and perspective. When your efforts go unrecognized or unrewarded, it also leads to feelings of disillusionment and burnout. That whole feeling of not being good enough, you're not doing your job good enough, why doesn't, you know, this person like me? Am I not enough? Am I not performing well enough? What am I doing wrong? What's wrong with me? And it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with your intrinsic values and those values not being in alignment with the person you report to or the company that you work for. So, in conclusion, as we wrap up today's episode, I want to emphasize just understanding the root causes of burnout is really the first step towards being able to address the issue. If you could recognize the impact of the excessive workload, the lack of control, the poor work-life balance, limited recognition, then you can begin to implement strategies to mitigate these factors and promote well-being in your personal and your professional life. So, that wraps up today's episode, but I hope you join me for part three of this series because we are going to be exploring some effective coping mechanisms for overcoming burnout.
