ESSA can enhance teachers' knowledge and skills by aligning professional development with existing knowledge on literacy, teaching, and professional development. Seasoned teachers, with three or more years of experience, possess a wealth of ideas and strategies. Consulting with them can provide insights into their understanding of phonological awareness and how to enhance its implementation. Phonological awareness activities need not be lengthy; even a few minutes daily can have long-term benefits for students. It's important to consult with these teachers to help determine what they already know about phonological awareness and how to help improve implementation.
