This idea that too many people in power have communicated in the city, which is that people don't want help. That is a myth. That is untrue, and people need to stop saying it. People want help, but you have to build trust. People want help, but they may not even recognize it because of their mental health or substance use issue. People want help, but they don't feel like they can get it. We have to build that trust. We have to get people services so they can get stable and they can see what they need and what they want in their lives, and we have to offer that option for people to get housing and to get stable and get the services they need and get real services. So homelessness is really important to me, but everything that touches on it matters to a lot of people. If you care about safety, you care about homelessness. If you care about economic development, you care about homelessness. If you care about having a grocery store or a pharmacy in your neighborhood, you care about homelessness. We have to address homelessness in order to also take care of these other issues that have been part of too many neighborhoods' experiences. We have to talk D&D sometime, so I'm actually tonight playing one of my games, so, yeah. In the city of Little Rock, the stories that I've heard from business owners is that the business licensing process is overly complicated, especially when it comes to Hispanic business owners. It takes weeks or months for people to get through the process, which piles on issues. So simplifying that business licensing process. In addition, I've been looking at the fee structure, the way that businesses have to pay a certain fee for getting a license and annual fees and things of that nature. The structure that I've heard from some business owners, especially small business owners, is that it is disproportionate for businesses that are trying to scale or whatever it is. And it disincentivizes that development and growth. And I think that it would also behoove us to, even if, to be able to also, you know, the city needs money. You know, fees are one of the ways that we get that. But we need to, if we get more business, we also get more fees. So, if we look back at that structure, then it might, it would help our city revenue as well. The other piece is developing more navigators when it comes to city policy. People that are, like, known supports in the city for small business owners. There are too many stories of people that are getting the runaround when it comes to licensing or zoning and being told, oh, well, that's not my issue, it's this person's issue. And then maybe calling that person and being pointed somewhere else. And that is time that people can be using to, time is a, you know, however we think about time. Whether it's made up or it's a precious commodity, like, it is something that if we are wasting it, then it affects our lives. And I think that we can do better as a city to make it easier with people that help navigate it. And then, I think bringing more business folks together. There are a lot of really cool merchant groups in the city that are doing good about helping their communities. Whether that's the Southwest Business and Community Leaders Luncheon that I just went to this week, the Selma Business and Merchant Alliance, the Hillcrest Merchant Alliance. These are places that you've seen more actions happening, like, especially when you think about, you know, we have hard stuff coming up and that's from the Merchant Association. We have a lot of the activities that's happening in Selma from the Business and Merchant Association. So, we have this opportunity to bring business leaders together to support one another, especially for small business owners, people of color, starting small businesses. Yeah. So, this is a great question because I think I mentioned this earlier before the podcast was started, that safety so often is only seen as security and in terms of bodyguards, police, or whatnot. And security can mean, and safety can mean so much more. And so, I think that, yeah, we need more investment in mental health and so we need more counselors in schools. We need more investment in catching problems before they happen and intervening in traumatic experiences that people have in the community and at home and at school. And I think that that, seeing that as an investment is going to have a profound impact on people's sense of safety at school and on security. Now, we can talk about what does security look like. I think that we still have to have somebody there that's responsible for making sure that people don't get on campus when they're not supposed to. We need to still make sure that we catch what we can of things coming into the school. We don't need to be there around guns and whatnot. We can also advocate for the state to not pass this change in gun law, that they want to allow guns on properties, but that's another story. But, in terms of the security itself, that's a how question and we have to, that thing gets rooted into the values, it's like how are we doing that in a way that's equitable, that recognizes the historical impact and consequences of a police response, the school to prison pipeline that is so prevalent, especially for black and brown kids. We have to be aware of that in making that decision. So, the short answer is, yes, we need more investment in counselors and mental health and that will be a contributing factor to safety, just as it will, not only for school, but for the community itself. So, we're going to, just another question or two, we need about five more minutes for anything I want to do, wrap up, anybody else, and then I'm going to jump in and do the closing and we're going to end up finishing up and y'all are doing, that was an amazing question, well thought out, can't believe you're a nice kid. So, who's going to do the last, I had a burning question. Okay, let's go. Another one is infrastructure. I noticed that Little Rock, in its development, is increasingly relying on suburban sprawl and car-based infrastructure, among a lot of other things, regarding our infrastructure, like zoning laws that require that suburbs stretch on for miles and that leave suburbs and houses that distance districts, especially business districts, and also, you know, in public areas, and public areas have almost entirely been eradicated. So, I really wanted to ask you about what kind of policies you would propose or support if you were elected to the position. There goes my other question. Yeah, this is, when we get into the specifics, that's what people really care about. And so, I think that we do need to have a review of our zoning rules that are on the books. And so, one of those is just to say, like, we need to do the review of the zoning rules. That is not, in and of itself, a policy, but it is in some ways because it's saying that we need to change and saying that we need to have it be equitable and community-informed and really take a hard look at what this is and then, from there, make the decision about what is zoning that is going to serve the community that we currently don't have with the sprawl that we're seeing. I appreciate that you brought up alleviating the overburdened police force. Whatever, when you said that it doesn't serve the people in the city when they're overburdened, you're so right because we have to, we have police officers, they're serving the community and if they are stressed and overburdened, they're more likely to have harmful responses to community members and, more often, that will be towards people of color. And we have to care about making sure that our police are not overburdened and that includes addressing responses before it becomes a police issue, making sure that we address homelessness and mental health and substance use issues. And so, for me, I want to see a division of that labor so that we can see, we also have a lot of traffic issues in the city. We know where the dangerous intersections are. We know the deadliest corridors for pedestrians and cyclists and drivers and everybody. So, a couple of things. One, I want to see that we enhance the code enforcement side of things. I think there are a lot of things that police do that don't require the police training, that don't require police response. And I think there's things that could fall more under code enforcement. To what extent can we have traffic violations that are responded to by code enforcement? To what extent can we invest more into social services and social workers or peer responders that don't require even the co-responder model that we currently have in the city for mental health calls or homelessness calls? So, those are a few of the things. When it comes to housing, I would love to see us focus in on one that's been very clear for me from Arkansas Community Organizations. They've been really loud advocates in the city, is a no-retaliation ordinance. They're amazing. They have a long history here, and they do good work, and they listen to people. And one is a no-retaliation ordinance. There's nothing that anybody can tell me that could change my mind that a no-retaliation ordinance is a bad thing. There is no reason that people reporting issues with their housing should then get threats and harassment from the landlord and the potential for losing their housing. People have to feel secure enough to make sure that they have an adequate and safe place to live that is up to code, and we have to care about that. And a no-retaliation ordinance is one of the key things that we really need to focus on. I could go on about many other specific things. Even this morning, I woke up early, and I was like, oh, yeah, this thing and this thing and this thing and this thing that I want to do. But a lot of it is around that prevention side of things, being proactive, first and foremost. I'll say one other. And some of it I'm learning, too, is what does it actually look like to translate? Because I'm often on the implementation side. I've been working with government to make sure that we implement policy and have not been – I don't know. I'm not a lawyer, but I know how to work with one and also know how to ask questions and recognize when things are missed and do that research. But I'll just say one thing that I want to look into is how can we build in supports for eviction defense or eviction mediation. How can we – there are cities in the country that have required mediation prior to evictions occurring. We can look into is that a requirement? Is that – what does it look like? What's the funding that goes into that? But other cities have seen really huge impacts on both housing, stable housing for people, and finding ways – and that prevents homelessness. And stability for the homeowners themselves or the landlords because evictions are not good for landlords either at the end of the day. And then evictions go on the records. So at the end of the day, I think it would serve both renters and landlords if we had this mediation as well as some support ahead of the game on looking at leases through a legal lens, making sure that people aren't being duped by some lords and to getting a property that is out of code or that is exploited in some way. So I hope that answers your question for specific policies. Cool. Oh, yeah. I was like, what are you going to ask me? Oh, yeah, Nick's zoning is great. Yeah. ... has been just the fact that Little Rock is so introversable. You take one long turn around the Midtown area and getting to where you go takes another 10 minutes. It's not like that in cities that expand out that much with Nick's zoning and more thoughtful plans. I really think that that would work better in the future. It's been absolutely amazing having you here and being able to interview you. And like I said, the passion you bring to this job has been truly inspiring. And I hope to hear from you more in the future. Do you have any final closing thoughts? Yeah, I do. First off, no, it really is an honor to be here. I... So as I mentioned, I used to run the Multifaith Youth Group of Arkansas, and that was for high schoolers of all different faith backgrounds. And I got to see some of the best, to see students that were leaning into their leadership and being such advocates for themselves and for others and learning across faiths and seeing people grow, like learn how to own their own voice. So anyways, all I have to say is that that's bringing back some really good memories for me, being in this space, being with high schoolers like y'all, and to see y'all be so active. I also used to... I don't know how much of this is going to go on the podcast. I'm just rambling at this point. But I used to, when I was in elementary, when I was in elementary, middle or high school, I used to... I was part of an Odyssey of the Mind program, and that was... Oh, yeah? Hey! Okay, okay. I went to a world competition once, so, okay, you have to out-beat me. But... That's good. Yeah, it's huge, and Odyssey of the Mind is such a great way of saying that... So you're given a problem, and you're supposed to solve it in various ways. Some are more engineering-focused, some are more creative and artistic, but it's all focused on kids from elementary to high school in their own little age groups and regions and whatever. You solve the problem, you design the sets, you design your costumes, you make the scripts, you make the machines, but you do all of this. And for me at that age, it was one of the things like, oh, like, we can do a lot. And then to go to a world competition and see all these people from across the country and to see people from across the world. I still have my pin collection, honestly, from Odyssey of the Mind. And so I still have my Hong Kong one and my Singapore one and things like that. Sorry, Vegas. I did other work like that because I believed, just as I do today, that the people that are most... that are closest to the issues are the ones that also have the solutions. That is something that has been key for me when it comes to community engagement work in nonprofit and government. That's key for me in this work that I'm doing and running for office. It was key for me when I was in school. And I'm just so glad to be here with you all and in that same sphere. So if you want to get involved in the campaign, you can go to... Oh, no! Spread the word about the fact that this is an important election not just for the people at the top of the ballot but the people all the way down. For the ballot initiatives that are at stake. And an opportunity to make some real change at this local level. So tell people about not only that their voice does matter in this but also that what the clear choice is in this election in particular. Do we want 32 years somebody who has spent 32 years as a roadblock to progress or do we want somebody who has the experience that we need to help this city reach its potential and meet the everyday needs of what are our people?
