This is an adaptation of Robert Lowry's hymn with multiple variations. These variations incorporate different melodic ornamentations, such as melismas and rhythmic patterns known as Scotch Snaps. There's also a portion presented in a minor key. The original hymn's lyrics are about congregating by a river, perceived to be divine, and where angels have been. The river, with its eternal crystal tide, flows by God's throne. The chorus reaffirms the gathering at the beautiful river alongside the saints, which is adjacent to God's throne. Further, it describes a scene of washing on the river's edge, where its silver spray is visible.
