This is a variation on an ancient gospel hymn. The melody initially introduced in the uppermost part migrates to other sections in the following verses, and a counter-melody introduced in the upper part in the second verse likewise moves around to different instruments as the piece progresses. The lyrics of the original hymn, penned by Jeremiah E Rankin, are as follows: 1. May God be with you until we reunite; May his guidance steer and support you; May you be safely shepherded with his flock. May God be with you until we meet again. Until our paths cross, until we convene, Until we meet at Jesus' side.
