This composition draws inspiration from four Telemann tunes, incorporating additional elements of augmented-second variations typical of Jewish music and assorted embellishments. The primary melodies include "Herr wie lange" (Lord, how long), a two-voice canon rooted in the psalm text, which serves as the introductory and concluding sections of the work. The English translation of the text is: "Lord, how long will you ignore me, how long will you conceal your face from me". Other components of the composition are also based on similar themes.
