String Quartet No 3

Finished in November 1994, this piece is a rearrangement of the previous creation, Signatures (B50) for solo viola. It adheres to the identical structure of six brief movements, based on note sequences constructed around specific intervals, along with a unifying characteristic of a modal Scottish folk melody. The pertinent intervals include: the major 3rd and major 2nd, the minor 3rd and minor 2nd, the perfect 4th and minor 3rd, the tritone and major 3rd, and the perfect 5th.
