The audio piece was initially finished in April 1987, underwent minor revisions in 1994 for its publication, and received a few more adjustments for its 2007 recording by the Lochrian Ensemble. The composition follows the conventional four-movement structure. The first movement, Sostenuto - allegro, is succeeded by a scherzo (characterized by a brisk and lively allegro molto, in 7/4 time), followed by an adagio movement (also in 7/4) and concluding with a finale (allegro molto). The structure's unique aspect is the difference in balance between the first and last movements.
