Piano Sonata No. 2 (B98)

Composed in July and August 1996, this musical piece was a sentimental tribute to a friend who relocated to America, with his name subtly encrypted within the music. The three movements borrow the titles from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op.81a Les Adieux, although any similarities with Beethoven's masterpiece stop there. The inaugural performance took place in the Rochdale Art Gallery, executed by David Martin on 22nd January 1998. The first movement, Les Adieux - Adagio, carries a mock-mournful tone interspersed with a tonal motif at certain points.
