The Opus 15, Three Sara Teasdale Songs for Soprano and Piano, originated as a pair of songs, but it felt unfinished. Sara Teasdale, an early 20th-century American lyric poet and recipient of the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1917, was known for her deeply poignant and sorrowful poetry. The second song in this collection, I Shall Not Care, was speculated to be her suicide letter (she ended her own life in 1933), but in reality, the poem was published well before. Despite this, Teasdale's poetry also has elements of hope.
