The Opus 12, Three Songs for Soprano and Piano, draw their inspiration from the enchanting, rhythmic verses of Langston Hughes (1902-1967). These compositions exhibit a prominent jazz influence and encapsulate raw, unadulterated emotions. They demand a dramatic rendition. My fascination with jazz took root from my father, a trumpet player who introduced me to the clarinet during my early years. A cherished musical remembrance of mine is his joy and appreciation when I would 'ad lib' by appending a few grace notes at the completion.
