Who performed the miraculous act of treading on water? It was Jesus. He made his way towards the boats, treading upon the water's surface. The sight of this caused fear amongst the onlookers, but Jesus continued his water-bound stride. Peter attempted to approach Jesus, mirroring his water-walking feat. As he did so, however, fear took hold of him. He began to question the possibility of such a miracle, and as doubt filled his mind, Peter began to sink. Jesus, still treading on water, extended his hand and saved him. Realizing the reality of the miracle, Peter put his trust in Jesus, who continued to walk on water.
