This is an instrumental quartet inspired by my vocal quartet, which is a musical canon influenced by the whimsical verse of Reverend George Strong about Hiawatha. In the verse, Hiawatha uses the hide of his hunted animal to create mittens. The creature mentioned in Strong's spoof doesn't actually exist; in the original poem by Longfellow, Mudjokivis is portrayed as a tribal adversary. However, this rendition is much more entertaining! Hiawatha slays the Mudjokivis, then uses its skin to fashion mittens. He ensures the fur is on the inside and the skin is on the outside, aiming to have the warmth on the inside.
