El Chapo Guzman, a notorious Mexican drug lord, escaped from a maximum-security prison in 2001 with the help of corrupt prison authorities. He had a long criminal career, starting as a marijuana grower and eventually founding his own drug cartel. After being arrested and imprisoned, he escaped by hiding in a laundry cart and bribing prison authorities. He remained hidden for 13 years until being recaptured in 2014. This is El Chapo's escape in 2001. Joaquin Guzman is a native of Sinaloa, Mexico, born in 1957. Commonly known as El Chapo Guzman is a Mexican former drug lord in the Sinaloa cartel. He is considered one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world. El Chapo's nickname is obtained from the Mexican slang word for shorty. Joaquin entered the drug trade through his father at an early age. He helped his father grow marijuana for local drug dealers in his early adulthood. Guzman began working for Hector Salazar, who was one of the nation's rising drug lords in the 1970s. He assisted in helping Salazar move drugs to Sinaloa and into the United States. His criminal career later continued as a member of the Guadalajara drug cartel, helping Miguel Gallardo, who was one of the nation's leading kingpins in the mid-1980s. After Gallardo's arrest, Guzman founded his own cartel in 1988. El Chapo became a leader in the Sinaloa cartel shortly after Gallardo's arrest. He helped successfully smuggle illicit drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Guzman was arrested early on in 1993 in Guatemala and was extradited to Mexico. He was exonerated on murder charges, but was then found guilty of drug trafficking. Guzman was sentenced to more than 20 years and was imprisoned in a Mexican maximum security prison near Guadalajara, Jalisco called Fuente Grande. El Chapo's 20-year sentence was cut short on January 19, 2001. He successfully escaped Fuente Grande with the help of corrupt prison authorities. His escape was done by hiding in a laundry cart, like in the movies where prisoners jump into a filled laundry cart and hide underneath the dirty laundry. Guzman was freed by bribing prison authorities and with the help of Javier Camberos, maintenance worker of the prison. Javier rolled the laundry cart that Guzman was hiding in and was eventually let out the door into freedom. El Chapo jumped out of the cart and leaped into the trunk of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Camberos has since then been in prison for helping aid his escape. Guzman's escape led him to be successfully hidden for 13 years. There was an extensive manhunt in recapturing Guzman from 2001 to 2014. The manhunt led to his next recapture in 2014.
