I have today a beautiful friend of mine, Nadia Halal, which is a language and education specialist and has done quite a feat in the past little while. So how are you? I'm doing great. Thank you. I am so glad to have you here. Thank you for coming. I wanted to take a moment to sit down with Nadia because I think it's really important that we celebrate the fact that she has done her first triathlon, and nonetheless, she's done the San Diego Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. San Francisco. San Francisco. Please forgive me. Okay. I can fix that. So tell me a little bit about you before we get into that conversation. Okay. Well, I've been in education for about 15, 16 years now, I guess. I've worked as a teacher in the substitute, I was a high school teacher, I was a college teacher, and now I work for the Ministry of Education, working with homeschooling families across the province. So I guide them in different educational tools and things like that. So that's basically my professional background. I also love writing and storytelling and things like that. I try to participate in the Montreal culture scene whenever I can. That's pretty often that's how I got into it because you keep on interrupting me, right? So confabulation, and then you've got that writer thing that we went to. What was the name? The Storytelling of the Writers in Montreal. Oh, the Quebec Writers Federation? The Quebec Writers Federation. It's really cool, actually. I was surprised because I've never been introduced to anything like that, and Nadia is the one that always introduces me to cool stuff like that, as well as shows and theater and whatnot. Thank you. So how often do you work out? How does the English language have anything to do with working out, and how did you get into it? Okay. Well, when I made the transition from a teacher to working at an office, I ended up with a lot of sitting. I suddenly was walking all the time and taking the metro, and now I was just working from home or working at a desk. There was actually a period, not a very long period, but a period of time there where I gained a good, I would say, dozen pounds just from getting used to this new lifestyle. So that's where I was. Picture me, that's how I was when I found out that I won a random draw. This event, the San Francisco Triathlon, is so popular in the world. If you Google top triathlons in the world, it's always in the top five, and often it's number one. It's the most coveted, the most popular, the one that everyone who loves triathlons wants to do that at least once in their life. It's a bucket list thing for a lot of people. It wasn't really a bucket list thing for me, but a friend of mine had mentioned it years ago in the pandemic when there was nothing else to do. We started walking outside and biking more and swimming just because there was nothing else to do. She mentioned this triathlon, and I thought, oh, that looks kind of cool. But she says, oh, no, no, but we can't qualify our way in. We're not that good. So the only way we could get in is by a random draw. So put your email. You never know. So I've been putting my email for like four years. Okay. Four years? Yeah, since 2020. I'm like, oh, yeah, it's going on for a little bit. So you thought, in 2020, I'm going to do the... Well, I really, I don't know. I definitely don't know if I could have done it then, being that I was a teacher back then, and I didn't have the free time that I have now. As a teacher, you're always prepping, you're marking. You don't have a lot of free time. Really, you don't. Maybe in the summer a bit, maybe at Christmas time, but not consistently throughout the year. So I feel like these things happen for a reason, and I happen to win this, coincidentally, at a time when I'm working from home most of the time, or I'm working at the office two days a week, but the majority of the time, I'm working from home. So I suddenly realized, well, I can stop working at like 4 or 4.30, and I don't need to mark. I don't need to prep. I can just go to the gym, right? I can just go for a run. I can go for a swim. I can go for a bike ride. So I started bit by bit. I started going to this gym near my house once a week, and then I did it twice a week, and then it was three times a week. Then I... Is that the fitness city that you introduced me to? Yes, yes. in Verdun, wonderful gym. Very small, but the coaches there, they really take the time to... They care about everyone. They know everyone by name, and it's wonderful, their classes. So I was going there eventually three times a week. I then started... I was swimming. I was always swimming once a month or so, but then I started swimming every week, sometimes more than once a week. I purchased a wetsuit, because I don't know if you're aware of the temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. Was that a little cold? I'm trying to create a picture for you to... Ever picture water with ice cubes in it, and it's just like you can see the frost on the outside glass? Imagine jumping into that. That's what it felt like. For a swim. Yeah. Not just for a five-minute dip. Not for going to the spa and jumping in and out. No. For going a kilometer or two kilometers. Yeah. No. It was definitely... I've never done anything remotely close to that. I have swum in the Atlantic Ocean. I have swum in the Mediterranean Sea. I've swum in many different seas that were salty, but never this blisteringly cold. So that was a... So anyway. So I probably didn't prepare enough for that, as I should have. I don't know how I could have prepared better for that, though. Cold plunges. Yeah. But, you know, you were already doing so much. I mean, I knew that... I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. I don't have pain the next day. Well, I almost, almost feel like I don't need a therapist because I'm not, I don't, let's say my head doesn't have the time to process any negative energy. Like, I don't know how to explain it. If I ask, especially, of course, after a workout, you just, it's like a veil or just these clouds of negative energy just disappear. So mentally, number one thing I could say is if you are a person who is a bit anxious like I am, this is the best thing you can do. If you're slightly depressed, this is also the best thing you can do. So I think I have a bit of both. So I do different things on different days depending on how I feel. And it helps in every area of my life, of my mental well-being. So that's by far the number one reason. Number two, I think just for social reasons, I love going to the gym and chatting with people and meeting like-minded, active people and people who say, hey, let's go to the park. Let's go for a run. Why don't we go biking together? You know, like just, it's meeting people, spending time with people who are, who would rather spend a weekend or an evening being active versus like, not that there's anything wrong with going out to a bar or to a restaurant to drink and eat. I've done that most of my life. I love that too. But I guess it's like I'm at a time in my life where I want to engage with people who have been ignoring most of my life. Like those people who want to live life in other ways. More, yeah, like expansive ways. Vivacious ways. Vivacious. I love that. Yeah. So hiking is another thing I've been doing. I try to do it. It's hard when it's 30 degrees and over, so I'm not doing it right now. But I love hiking. So it's changed quite a few things. So you said hiking, meeting people, it's changed your mindset. It's changed your body. It's changed your eating habits. Yeah, for sure. For sure. I eat much cleaner now. When I eat something which I know I shouldn't be eating, like something fried, my body immediately gets upset with me. So I try to really limit those occasions. And how old are you, if I may ask? 44. 44. Wow. Perfect timing too, right? Because it's at our age. And even younger, if we don't do any exercise in our 30s, then we don't build that bone density and that muscle mass that we need as women to actually grow into our menopause and be healthy, not kind of go wonkers like some of us do. So bravo. 44. And completed her first triathlon. Definitely not the last, I assume. My first Olympic triathlon. Your first Olympic triathlon. It's called a sprint triathlon. I did one in 2020, and I intend to do one in September as well. Another triathlon. Another sprint triathlon. Another sprint triathlon. Plus the 10 kilometers. Which is right now a baby triathlon. Aww, that's so cute. A baby triathlon. I love that. So are you going to start doing triathlons every year? Where are you going from here on, right? Great question. So a lot of people have asked me, oh, are you going to do that again? Are you going to go back to San Francisco and do that again? And I said, well, probably not. First of all, because again, I'd have to win or a random draw to get in. And two, I'd rather look or I love to travel. You know that, right? I love to travel. And I'd rather just look at other countries that have events that are similar. And this way I find that it's such a beautiful way to combine traveling with something I love with another thing I love. So I was in San Francisco for five days. For maybe three of those days I was obviously preoccupied. But I still had got enough time to see a lot of the city. And it was great. And so my friends that came with me, we had a look at triathlons around the world that are, you know, well-known, let's say. And we chose one in Thailand. It's called the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. So it's in November. Well, it's in November every year. But I'm not thinking of going this November. But I'm thinking of going in November 2025. So that's a – and I'd like to go to a different country every year and do this. Like, you know, get my bones and muscles willing. But I'd like to – like there's the London Triathlon. I'd love to – that would be easy for me. I have friends in London I could stay with. You know, there's others in the U.S. I could do. There's, you know, there's so many in the U.S., actually. But there's just so many around the world. So I don't know why people limit themselves to their one area. Like there's – I mean, it's obviously easier depending on your circumstances. If you have kids, it might not be so easy to just pick up and travel and triathlon your way around the world. But it is definitely something I'd like to do in my future. Have you met anybody? Any romantic someone-someone? No, no. During the whole thing? No, not at all. I met a lot of people in San Francisco. We talked – I've talked to so many people in the hotel every morning for breakfast. But we just were talking about the event and it wasn't – it was nothing romantic. They were all very impressed by me, though. They were like, this is your first Olympic triathlon and you picked this one? Yeah. It's crazy, right? They're like, no, no, it's impressive. It is impressive. It really is. That's amazing. Most of the people I met had done – done some Olympic triathlons by the time they had done that one. Oh, wow. You go, girl. You just aim high and you go. You go for it. Also, those are the people who I said hi to as I was starting the run and they were finishing the run. It's significant. I have significant room for improvement, but I recognize that now. It's not just about completing. I'm happy I completed. I'm not taking that for granted. But I also want to get better and faster and in a natural – I'm not going to go crazy. I'm not trying to win a bet here. I'm not trying to win money. I just want to be a bit better than I was, right? Every – not every week or every month necessarily, but every couple of months, every six months, maybe doing an event and gauging, measuring myself, my previous self. I think that's a very realistic thing. I think that is. That's all I really want is to be better than I was. If you were to give some pointers to people that are either not moving or that would want to move more towards something like this, what would you say? What would you recommend? A lot of people at work were telling me, oh, you're so lucky you can do this or how do you get into it? They seem to think that it was easy for me to do all this. It really wasn't. I would say just start by one thing, adding one thing to your week, even if it's just a walk. Add one walk a week, even if it's one kilometer, two kilometers. Once that becomes a habit, make it a routine that every Monday I have to do this, every Monday, regardless of if it's raining, just bring an umbrella. You can do it. Commit to one day a week. Once that becomes easy, then do it two times a week. Then maybe add another activity that you like. It could be yoga. It could be something low impact. It's summer now. You could do so many things. There's swimming. There's tennis. There's pickleball. Table tennis. Anything that you're getting out of your house and off the couch is good. Anything. To say, oh, but I'm not going to be as good as you. I don't want to play tennis with you because you're better than me. It doesn't matter. I love playing with anyone regardless of ... Even it's better when you're not good because then you make me run further because I try to get any ball that is hit. I'm actually running more with people who don't know how to play. I love playing with people who don't know how to play. At this point, I'll take any activity that's outdoor. What would you recommend in terms of nutrition? I definitely could improve with that. The things that I've learned is no matter how much protein I think I'm getting, I'm not getting enough. I definitely always need more protein. Drinking lots of liquids, especially water, is something that it's not easy for me to do. I love water, but when I'm working during the day, I just drink my coffee. I don't always think of how much water I need because I'm just, oh, I have my coffee. I'm not dehydrated. I don't feel dehydrated, but you always need water, always. What happens is that sometimes I go running, and then I'd just be so thirsty, and I would drink so much. That's because I probably didn't drink enough during the day. All these things I learned slowly, week after week after week, I got better. A friend of mine at work actually bought me a water bottle for my birthday. It's a two-liter bottle, and it shows at different times where you should be at with your water. I found it very hard to stick to it, but it was a great tool. That's not something anyone can buy and try for themselves. Fantastic. Other than that, nutrition-wise, I would say don't ignore vegetables. People think the carnivore diet is great. It's not healthy. No. Only carnivore. No, of course. A lot of fiber as well, a lot of protein, and a lot of greens. A lot of greens, a lot of fiber, a lot of protein, and a lot of water for nutrition. What about the mindset? What would you recommend? Being a first-timer, coming back to movement after a long time of not having come back to movement in the past years, what would you recommend in terms of mindset? Oh, I'm too tired. Oh, not tonight. Oh, let me just watch this. Oh, let me just do that. Oh, let me finish this. All of a sudden, it's too late for us to do it. That procrastination that people go through, what would you recommend in terms of shifting their mindset? That's a very good question because I'm the queen of procrastination, or I have been in the past anyways. Even now, now that the event is over, I have to really tell myself, Nadia, you have to go to the gym. You can't. But I'm tired, and I don't have an event this month. But I still go. I think it's just about respecting yourself and knowing, you have to know how quickly it is to spiral back. You work so hard to get to a certain point, so you set up these routines for yourself. I'm going to walk every day, or I'm going to run every day, or not every day, but once a week or twice a week. If you have a plan, if you're doing, let's say, five different things in a week, and out of those five things, I'm saying that sounds like a lot, but it could be just you're walking one day, you're doing yoga on another day, and then you're walking another day, and then maybe you're doing tennis or pickleball or something like that on one day, and then on another day, you're doing a Pilates class or some kind of class like that. Strength training, glutes, abs, whatever. Whatever. So you're setting up maybe three to five commitments in your week, and it's so hard to get that routine. This is why I say build them up slowly, but then it's so easy to stop going and to unravel and to just go back to just being on your couch and watching whatever new season of whatever show is about to air. I guess you have to just have the knowledge and the awareness and the belief in yourself that you have to keep a minimum of activity. It's not the negative will quickly find its way back into your life, the negative thoughts, the negative habits, anything. It's just the negativity comes back so quickly. It's like out there just waiting for your weaknesses. It's like you have to just... So we keep busy, and when we keep busy, we get more done. And our mind actually clears up, and we feel better, and we have more energy to be able to continue. And not only that, but our body actually builds up in a way to help us with our longevity.
