The speaker shares a personal experience about effective communication during a lacrosse tournament. As an offensive player placed on the defensive side, they were unsure of what to do. Fortunately, their teammates provided clear instructions and guidance without being negative. This allowed the speaker to understand where to go and make a play when the ball came to them. The speaker draws a parallel to the business world, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in bringing out positive benefits and improving the overall team, regardless of individual skills. Now, I would like to share a story about how effective communication has positively impacted me. So, a few summers ago in a lacrosse tournament, I was stuck on the defensive side of the ball, which is not what I'm used to. I'm an offensive player. I didn't really know where to go. I didn't know who to guard, and I was kind of stuck in no-man's land, but luckily, I had defenders and guys who were really skilled in this expertise, so they were able to tell me where to go. They would say, hey, Sam, move to the left, move to the right, come back to the crease, and now I understood where to go when they were all directing me and telling me what to do, and they were saying this in a manner that it wasn't negative. They weren't shouting at me. They were just helping me get to the right place, and then eventually, when the ball came to me, I was able to make a play because I knew what to do because my team had me in the right places. This is very similar to the business world because not always do you have people with equal skills and certain expertises, but if you're able to communicate well and you're able to help everybody out, that can really bring out so much positive benefit because then you have everybody on the same page regardless of how skilled they are because everybody's communicating and helping one another to improve the overall team.
