Welcome to Serials and Schemes. I'm Sam. And I'm Sandy. This is a True Crime and Conspiracy Podcast. Our podcast is intended for mature audiences. Listener discretion is advised. Welcome back to Serials and Schemes, the podcast where we take a deep dive into the lives behind some of the most infamous true crime cases. If you're new here, hey, welcome. I'm Sandy. And I'm Sam. Today we're starting our multi-part series on Shanann Watts, a woman whose tragic story became one of the most shocking and heartbreaking cases in recent history. But before we get into what happened, we want to take some time to really get to know Shanann, the person she was before she became a household name for all the wrong reasons. That's right. And all too often, when a crime becomes infamous, the victim's identity gets overshadowed by the horror of what happened to them. But Shanann was more than just a name in the headlines. She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a mother. And today we're going to talk about her life before she met Chris Watts. Shanann Watts was born Shanann Ruchick on January 10, 1984, in Pacek, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Frank and Sandra Ruchick and had one sibling, her younger brother Frankie. When she was still young, her family relocated to Aberdeen, North Carolina, where she spent most of her childhood. Now, her upbringing wasn't necessarily glamorous. The Ruchicks weren't wealthy, but they were hardworking and close-knit. Shanann's parents instilled in her a strong work ethic from a young age, something that would stick with her for the rest of her life. She attended Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, North Carolina, where she was described as friendly, independent, and determined. She wasn't the type to blend into the background. Shanann was driven, focused, and always pushing herself to do better. But life wasn't always easy for her. Shanann was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes chronic pain and fatigue. It's the kind of diagnosis that could easily make someone feel defeated. But Shanann wasn't that kind of person. No, she wasn't. Instead of letting lupus define her, she pushed through, working multiple jobs and setting high expectations for herself. She wanted to build a successful life, and she wasn't going to let anything, illness, stress, or setbacks, stop her. And that drive carried over into her adult life. Before she met Chris Watts, Shanann worked in the automotive industry and later became a brand promoter for Laval, a health and wellness company. She was ambitious, hardworking, and had a real talent for marketing. Her personality really shined in everything she did. She was outgoing and social, always connecting with people, always putting herself out there. Her friends and family have described her as someone who was not only a go-getter, but also deeply caring and loyal. And that's reflected in the way people talk about her. Here are a few quotes from people that knew her best. Her brother, Frankie Ruchek, once said she was a picture-perfect mother, and it was amazing to be an uncle and to be around her and the kids. And her mother, Sandra Ruchek, described her as fun, full of life. She did so many things. She had a gift, and she was so smart and organized. And her close friend, Nicole Atkinson, who knew her well, said Shanann was a great mother, a great person, and she just loved her kids and wanted to do everything for them. It's clear that Shanann was loved and admired by people closest to her. She was hardworking, driven, and deeply devoted to her family. Chris Watts was born on May 16th of 1985 in Spring Lake, North Carolina, to his parents, Ronnie and Cindy Watts. He was known to be quiet, shy, and introverted. His former teacher, Joe Judy, even described him as extremely reserved during his time at Pine Forest High School. So when you said, Judy, I was like... Chris wasn't the loudest kid in the room. In fact, he rarely was in the room, if he didn't have to be. He was the kind of kid who preferred the corner of the playground over the center, the one who sat at the back of the classroom, not out of disinterest, but because it felt safer. And that quiet nature, it wasn't shyness exactly, but more of a careful way of observing the world, shaped the way he connected with others. Yeah, I think that's something a lot of introverts can relate to. When you're naturally quiet, friendships don't always happen fast. But the ones that do happen tend to be deep, right? Yeah, exactly. Chris wasn't a kid with a huge friend group, but the friendships he did form were meaningful. He was the one people trusted with their secrets, the one who listened more than he spoke. I remember hearing a story about how in middle school, one of his friends told him about a really tough family situation, and Chris didn't offer advice, he just sat there and listened. And that meant more than words ever could. I mean, that's powerful. But I imagine that being introverted also came with challenges when it came to relationships. Oh, for sure. In group settings, he sometimes struggled to find his voice. It wasn't that he didn't have things to say, he just preferred to say them when the time felt right. Some people mistook that for being aloof, but those who really knew him understood. And the thing is, when he was around the right people, people he trusted, he could be surprisingly talkative. It's just that earning that trust took time. Yeah, it sounds like Chris's introversion wasn't just a trait, but something that probably shaped the way that he navigated the world. Yeah, exactly. And as he grew up, that quiet nature didn't go away, but he learned how to use it as a strength. So let's shift to when Chris met Shanann, how their relationship started, the dynamic between them, and what led them to start a new life in Colorado. Because when you look at their personalities, they were super different. Chris was quiet, reserved, someone who took his time opening up to people. Shanann, on the other hand, was outgoing, confident, and full of energy. It's one of those classics, like, opposites attract situations. Yeah, they complemented each other. And that happens a lot in relationships, I reckon. And from what we know, Shanann made the first move. She was the one who reached out to Chris on Facebook. And at first, she didn't even think much of it. Later, she actually tried to push him away because she had a lot going on in her life. She was dealing with her health challenges, and relationships just weren't her priority at the time. Yeah, but Chris didn't push. He was patient, steady, exactly what Shanann needed. He stuck around, supported her, and little by little, they built something. And when they finally started dating seriously, people noticed how they balanced each other out. Shanann was the planner, the one who took charge, while Chris was more laid back and let her lead. Yeah, and I think that dynamic is what made their relationship work, at least in the beginning. Shanann liked having control, and Chris was comfortable letting her take the reins. From the outside, it looked like they had a solid partnership. Different, but complementary. Okay, so let's talk about their big move to Colorado. They were originally from North Carolina, but they wanted a fresh start. Frederick, Colorado was quiet, safe, and a great place to raise a family. Right, and by that point, they were married with two young daughters, Bella and Celeste. Shanann had a growing career with Thrive, and Colorado gave them an opportunity to build the life they wanted. Bigger house, new job prospects, and a tight-knit community. Yeah, but even though everything looked picture-perfect, the beautiful home, the social media posts about their happy family, there were definitely pressures building, at least. Yeah, and that's what we'll dive into next, how their life in Colorado evolved, the challenges they faced, and what started shifting in their marriage. Stay with us, because on the surface, their life seemed like the perfect American dream, a beautiful home, two adorable daughters, financial stability. But when you look a little closer, you start to see some cracks forming. Right, and one of the biggest things people don't always realize is that Shanann was the one who actually purchased their house, in her name only. She bought that five-bedroom home in Frederick before Chris even had a job lined up in Colorado. And it was a big investment, over $400,000, which for a young couple with kids was a huge financial commitment. Yeah, and that's important, because it gives us a glimpse into their dynamic. Shanann was ambitious, a go-getter, someone who took charge of their future. Meanwhile, Chris was steady and dependable, but not necessarily the one driving the big decisions. And speaking of work, Chris eventually landed a job at Anadarko Petroleum, a major oil and gas company. He worked as an operator, which meant maintaining oil wells, checking pressure levels, and making sure everything ran smoothly at the drilling site. Yeah, it was a good, stable job, decent pay, but it came with long hours. He worked early mornings, sometimes odd shifts, and was often out in the field for most of the day. And that's something to keep in mind as we talk about how things played out in their marriage. Meanwhile, Shanann was working for the Bell, promoting Thrive, which is a health and wellness brand that sells supplements, shakes, patches. And it wasn't just a job. It was part of an MLM, or a multi-level marketing business model, which, you know, if you're from New Zealand, you'll know about like Avon and Arbonne. Like it's sort of like a tiered sales system. Yeah. Yeah, so for people that aren't familiar, MLMs work by having individuals sell products directly, but also by recruiting others to join under them. So the more people you recruit, the more money you can potentially make, at least in theory. It's a good word there, I reckon. And Shanann was all in. She built a personal brand around Thrive, posting daily about the products, the benefits, and the lifestyle it offered. She was always traveling for the company events, networking, and pushing to grow her team. So it seemed like it was paying off. She had bonuses, a luxury car allowance, and trips to places like Cancun. But here's where reality might not have matched what people saw online. While Shanann's social media painted a picture of financial freedom, big house, vacations, new cars, their actual finances were a different story. Yeah, reports later showed that Chris and Shanann had filed for bankruptcy back in 2015. They were dealing with significant debt, including student loans, credit cards, and, of course, medical bills. And even after the bankruptcy, they were still juggling a high cost. Lifestyle, mortgage, car payments, business expenses for Thrive. It's possible that despite all the success Shanann projected online, they were feeling real financial pressure behind the scenes. That's something that we do see a lot with social media. It's easy to show the highlight reel, the happy family moments and thriving businesses, the dream home, but what's really going on can be a completely different story. I know, honestly, they're like, you're not going to go on to social media and be like, oh, yeah, well, I spent too much fucking money here, so let's all talk about that. Oh, yeah, we're bankrupt, by the way, and life is shit right now. People talk shit about, oh, Facebook, it's so fake. It's not fake. It's just curious. It's the highlight reel, like you said. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Like I said, you're not going to go in there and do a fucking highlight on all the shit parts of your life, and oh, I had this argument with my husband, and my kids don't fucking listen, and no one picks up their socks off the floor. Social media is the highlight reel until when you're made for the shit show reel. You know what I mean? That's how it is. That's not where you eat your dirty laundry, although a lot of people do. Yeah, unfortunately. If you ever scrolled through Shanann's social media, you'd see that she loved to document their lives. So many videos of her with the girls, and Chris often in the background, sometimes engaged, sometimes distant, and that gap between deception and reality, that can create stress, especially in a marriage. Yeah, I mean, Chris and Shanann's life in Colorado looked picture perfect, but it may have been more strange than it seemed. The financial pressures, the long work hours, the demands of Shanann's thrived business. Everything was going to pile up, and then in early 2018, they got some unexpected news. Yeah, Shanann found out she was pregnant again. Baby number three. And from what we know, it was a total surprise. They already had two young daughters, Bella and Celeste, and with everything going on, the financial struggle, the demanding job, you know, Shanann constantly working to grow her thrived business, it wasn't necessarily the perfect time to add another baby into the mix. But Shanann was excited. She saw this baby as a blessing, as something that would bring their family even closer. She even recorded the moment she told Chris. Yeah, that video is out there. She's standing in their bedroom, wearing a shirt that says, oops, we did it again, holding up a positive pregnancy test, and Chris, he smiles and he says, that's awesome. But if you watch him closely, he doesn't seem overjoyed, not in the way that you'd expect from someone who just wound up having another baby. Yeah, and that moment has been analyzed a lot. Was he just caught off guard? Was he stressed about another child when they were already stretched thin? We don't know exactly what was going through his head, but we do know that around the same time, things in their marriage started to shift. Right, and Shanann, being who she was, tried to stay really positive. She kept posting on social media, sharing updates about her pregnancy, calling Nico their miracle baby. But behind the scenes, it seems like Chris was pulling away. And that's where things get really complicated, because at the same time, Shanann was celebrating this new life. Chris was beginning to distance himself emotionally. And that leads us to one of the biggest turning points in their story. Chris' growing detachment, and what we now know was happening behind the scenes. But what should have been a joyous time was anything but. Chris' behavior changed. Cracks were beginning to show, but Shanann was trying. Shanann and Chris found out that they were expecting their third child, and while Shanann was overjoyed, Chris seemed distant. And that distance only grew over the summer of 2018, when Shanann took Valor and Celeste to an extended trip to visit family in North Carolina. Over that summer, their marriage started to fall apart. Chris had told Shanann that their relationship was over, and in response she told him he would never see their daughters again. She was desperate to save their marriage though, so she sent him texts, even wrote letters trying to reach him. Yeah, this was a big moment in their story. In late June, Shanann and the girls flew to North Carolina to spend six weeks with her family. And on the surface, this made sense. She was pregnant, the girls hadn't seen her parents in a while, and the girls would get quality time with their grandparents. But looking back, this trip may have played a role in widening the emotional gap between her and Chris. It was the longest time they'd ever spent apart, and it gave Chris something that he hadn't had in years. Space. Yeah, and from what we now know, the space allowed him to start making choices that would change everything. Instead of missing his wife and daughters, he started pulling away even more. He lost weight, became emotionally detached. Yeah, and before we get into that, let's talk about when Chris actually did the move. Sorry, can you start your one again, I guess, sorry. My phone was vibrating right on the line there, hang on a minute. Yeah, well, before we get into that, let's talk about when Chris actually did visit them. About a month into the trip, he flew out to North Carolina to spend a week with Shanann and the girls. But when he got there, things kind of, like, felt off. Right. Right. Shanann later told friends that Chris was distant the entire time. He wasn't affectionate. He wasn't engaging like he normally would, even with the girls, and she felt it. She even texted a friend saying, something's wrong. He's not the same. And it wasn't just Shanann who noticed. Her family did too. They said Chris seemed detached, like he didn't want to be there, and he wasn't acting like a husband who was excited to see his pregnant wife and kids after a month apart. Yeah, and one of the biggest moments from this trip was what's now known as the Nutgate incident. Honestly. Sorry. I'm sorry. I love that Americans just put gate on their shirt. It makes me happy. And then one that's called Nutgate. I'm going to tell you, when I saw that term, I did not think that someone was given, like, some peanuts. I thought it was Nuttingate. And I was like, this case took a twisted turn. Like, let's go dirty real quick. I'll allow it. I'll allow. Oh, God. Yeah, this was when Shanann and her mother had a confrontation with Chris's parents over an issue with food. Shanann had strict dietary rules for Celeste because of her allergies, but Chris's mother gave her something with nuts, which led to a huge argument. Shanann felt like Chris didn't defend her, and that only deepened the tension. And look, I know how I would feel if that were me and my husband didn't back my ass up. Yeah, for sure. Regarding our child. Yes. Like, that's fucking ridiculous. And especially with a nut allergy. Like, that's huge. Yeah. There's a reason that there is strict dietary requirements. It's not for shits and gigs. Yeah, 100%. So when Chris left North Carolina and flew back to Colorado alone, things were already rocky. Shanann was still in North Carolina feeling hurt, confused, and like something was seriously wrong in their marriage. Chris had told Shanann their relationship was over, and in response, she told him he would never see their daughters again. But deep down, she didn't want it to be over. She was desperate to save their marriage. She sent him texts, letters, trying to reach him. She wanted to fix things. But Chris, he had already emotionally checked out. And then when she did return to Colorado in early August, Chris wasn't the same person. Like I said before, he lost weight. Yeah. And he wasn't affectionate. And Shanann definitely knew something was going on. And most women, when we feel a shift, like most women who are in heterosexual relationships, when we feel a shift in the man, it's actually very easy to know like, fuck, there is an issue here. You can feel it. You can feel it straight away. On August 7th, just days before her death, Shanann confided in a friend saying Chris had admitted he was scared to have another baby. He told her he was happy with just the girls and didn't want a third child. That weekend, from the 9th of August until the 12th, Shanann traveled to Arizona for a LaValle work event with her friend Nicole. And according to Nicole, Shanann was visibly distraught, barely eating or drinking. Yeah. She sent Chris several messages trying to get him to open up, asking him to meet her halfway. One of her texts read, I try to give you space, but while you're working and living the bachelor life, I'm carrying our third and fighting with two kids daily and trying to work and make money. It's not hard texting, love you and miss you. If you don't mean it, then I get it, but we need to talk. I keep looking at my phone all night and no response from you. Like seriously, we didn't just start dating yesterday. We've been together 8 years and have 2 and a half kids together. Man, it's heartbreaking because you can feel her desperation in that message. She was fighting for a marriage. A marriage that didn't seem like Chris wanted. Yeah, exactly. You can. You can feel that desperation. That Sunday night, August 12th, Nicole drove Shanann home. She dropped her off around 2am, not realizing she would be the last person to see her alive. And what happened next would shock the entire world. Because what Shanann didn't know as she walked through that front door was that Chris had already made up his mind and by sunrise, everything would be different. The next morning, August 13th of 2018, Shanann's friend Nicole Atkinson started to get worried. Nicole knew she had a doctor's appointment that morning to check on the baby, but when Shanann didn't answer her texts, Nicole started to get a bad feeling. This wasn't like Shanann. She was always on her phone, always responsive, so Nicole kept calling, kept texting, but there was nothing. Then, she noticed something even more alarming. Shanann hadn't posted anything on social media that morning. Yeah, and that was a huge red flag. Shanann shared everything online. Updates about her kids, her Thrive business, even little moments from her day. But on August 13th, there was nothing. Nicole decided to drive over to the Watt's house to check on her, but when she got there, she saw that Shanann's car was still in the garage and the girl's car seats were inside, but no one was answering the door. Now, at this point, Nicole was really concerned. She called Cliff at work and asked if he knew where Shanann was. His response? I think he said that she'd taken the girl to her friend's house. But something about that didn't sit right with Nicole. Shanann was pregnant. She wasn't feeling well the night before when Nicole dropped her home, and all of her belongings, her car, her purse, even her shoes, were still at home. It didn't make sense that she would just leave without telling anyone. And that's when Nicole made the decision that changed everything. She called the police. And from that moment on, the search for Shanann, Bella, and Celeste began. And what unfolded next would reveal a truth far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. In our next episode, we'll dive into the chilling events that unfolded just hours after Shanann returned home, when everything changed forever. But before we end the episode, I want to discuss Chris's demeanor. You know how we always talk about how quiet nature's not necessarily a bad thing? No. But was everything just so internal? Was he just in his head so much? Not to say that there's no excuse for what is about to unfold, but was he just so in his fucking head? As quiet people, no one goes, oh, that's a red flag. But when they do something, they kill someone, or they snap, then we go, oh, it's because they were quiet. It's not all quiet people, but most of those sorts of people were quiet. There is a commonality in it. For example, we covered Richard Speck, and it was also quiet, traumatized, etc. There's a lot of... David Bain. Yeah, David Bain. There is something about it. I love quiet people because I'm loud. I attract them to my life because they're my loudness. But I never think that they're quiet, they're probably going to fucking murder someone. Do you know what I mean? But it is quite buzzed that that is a common thread, it seems. Especially in men. More so in men. Yes, for sure. For sure. Also, I don't know if you've seen pictures or videos of them together. I know that you can't just look at someone and be like, they must be a murderer. He doesn't look like that. No. But he is withdrawn a lot. Yeah. But more just in a quiet way. It just looks like he's just shy. And he was, as a kid, and even as an adult, he was shy. So you go, okay. But, yeah, I don't know. Looking at him, I wouldn't... You know, he's decent looking. Yeah, I thought he was quite attractive. Yeah, and the two of them together, it's super like... So beautiful looking together. Which I hate saying now. Yeah, of course. That she's gone, and I don't want to put them together at all. No, we're not saying it's perfect. Like we said, on the surface, it was very much a picture perfect American family. And for eight years, they were happy and had children. And there was no signs of domestic violence. There was no signs of, you know, psychopathy. Yeah. Yeah, it's quite buzzy. Not in a good way, obviously. But it does boggle me when we cover cases like this Yes. Yeah, it is. And it just goes to show that you just don't know what's going on. You don't know what people are like. And like you're saying, it's that, like, all up in their head. You don't know what people, heads, like, where they're at and what they're living through inside their head. A hundred percent. We only get a glimpse into what people are when they allow us to. And people like that aren't allowing us to see much at all. That's who they are. That's their life. Yeah. I wonder, like, was there anything on micro-expressions? Like, was there any kind of like, expert pathology around that? Not that I saw, no. It'd be interesting if someone who had like a degree or whatever in micro-expressions who could like read all of the expressions from all the videos that there are of them into rat shade, for example. Yeah, obviously there's been things done on the, like, aftermath. But yeah, going back into, you know, like, what if there was a moment where you do, from one video to the next, see the shift happen in their relationship? Do you know what I mean? Yeah. Like, it'd be quite interesting even just to note that because I think a lot of our female listeners need to also be acutely aware. Yes, you need to be aware. It's hard because from the videos, and I'm not an expert, I don't look at all that like micro-expression or anything like that. And neither of us are qualified for this, you know? No, but outside it, you look at those videos and he actually comes across as, what the youth would now say, a simp. But I would say, like, a golden retriever. Like, he just, she's obviously ruling everything. She's getting things done. She's like, this is how it's going to be. And he comes across as the golden retriever that, yep, I'll do whatever. But it doesn't seem like that. Like, now that, you know, we've got the aftermath and we know what happened, was he like that? Yeah. It's an interesting one because, like, it's funny. When I look at the videos, and maybe it's because I've only seen the videos where he does look a bit more withdrawn and quiet. But like, if I were to read those videos, it kind of gives me a guy who doesn't want to be there. Yeah. Like, early on, it's like, he's shy and doesn't want to be on the video. Exactly. Or does he not want to be there? Exactly. And like, that's also something to consider. I just mean like, sometimes the guys are used to it and they play him for the cameras and stuff like that. Even if they're not like that in real life, they'll do it for the vlog. Yeah. Do you know what I mean? I look at like, I think we spoke about Selena Sturkey though, you know. Yeah. And I look at her, she's loud and, you know, all over the place and she's like having fun and she's making jokes and her husband is like quite chill. Yeah. And he's so deadpan. Yeah. Like, she'll be like, like that's how he is. Yes. And then she'll like, tell him some stupid, dirty thing and he goes, oh, and he'll just walk away. And that man is the greenest flag I've ever seen. But I think that's their schtick though. Yeah. I think that is their online persona. Yeah. She's like, maybe he's not like that with family, which I highly doubt that he is like that with family or friends. Yeah. But I think that that's their schtick because she is so out the gate and crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
