Feming Morgan, the special guest on Urban Agriculture, discusses her gardening in a small space of 15 square feet in Glendale, California. She finds gardening therapeutic and enjoys the rewards of fresh produce. Despite the limitations of a small space, she practices window gardening and vertical permaculture. She only grows plants suitable for the local environment. The amount of time spent gardening varies, as it is a relaxing activity. Feming also planted an apple tree in Blacksburg during her visit. Her favorite aspect of gardening is being able to harvest fresh herbs and vegetables. Hello guys, on today's episode of Urban Agriculture, we have a special guest coming on, my mom, Feming Morgan, who is going to discuss her gardening within a very small space of about 15 square feet outside the front of our townhouse in Glendale, California. My mom's special and she gave me a good relationship to plants and gardening, and I grow some of my own plants in my house right now, where I live in Blacksburg, and I've had three plants that I've been keeping alive since my freshman year. So without further ado, here's the interview I had with my mom. So this is Feming Morgan, she has a garden in a very small space in Glendale, California. Glendale is a suburb in North Los Angeles. So, Feming, why do you have a garden? I consider gardening has two primary effects on me. The first one is very therapeutic. The second, it can, you know, the plants I grow, to take care, it can give me beautiful flowers and fresh fruit and fresh vegetables. Those just cannot find at the grocery store. They just, it's an effect of your hard work. And how does gardening in such a small space affect the way that you garden? Um, yeah, it's tough if I don't have a big plot. However, I try to, you know, it's a, you know, just the way this is for people who live in the apartment townhouse, they have this called window gardening, actually. And that's what I've been learning since pandemic. You can grow things vertically, vertical permaculture. That's a kind of design. It's new technology for people who have a small space. So that's something I really get interested. Right. And are there any plants you wish that you could have in your garden? Um, not really, because the one I decide, okay, when you plant things, first of all, you have to know what growth you want. You cannot wish something that's not suitable for your local environment. So that's kind of limitation. So I just take whatever can thrive in a local environment and needs a minimum care. That's my criteria. Right. And so with minimum care plants, how much time do you think you spend gardening in a week? Um, well, it's remember, this is a very therapeutic. Sometimes I don't really keep track of time. Because I don't feel like obligated. Oh my goodness, my garden is filled with the weeds. No, it never happens. Sometimes I just go on there to get some flowers when I have the time. When I have a few minutes to take a break. That's what I like to do. So to answer your question, it's hard to measure. It just depends on how busy I am. And if I have a little free time, I'm just happy to spend those time at gardening. Right. And when you came and visited Blacksburg this week, was it part of your plan to put a apple tree outside our front yard? Yes, that's, see, that's the thing. When a gardener, no matter where he or she goes, when she's, you know, like me, I just use me as an example. When I see some open space, and the first thing pop in your mind is, what, what, what can I grow in this spot, you know, and the apple tree will do well in Blacksburg. So therefore, I planted an apple tree. Right. And what would you say that your favorite aspect of gardening is? It's the harvest time. It's like, imagine when you need some basil, or you need some green onion, you just step out, you know, walk out the door, and then pick fresh green onions and basil. And then that's my biggest joy. All right. Thanks for taking your time to come on and talk about gardening. My pleasure.
