The Kresge Library is being encouraged to purchase and archive LCD Sound System's album, "This Is Happening," to elevate their CD collection. The album is praised for its danceability and ability to relieve stress for students. Happiness derived from listening to the album can improve students' ability to study effectively. Having a physical CD will allow students to listen to music without distractions from electronic devices. The librarians are urged to provide the CD version of the album to enhance the library's collection. Hello listeners, and welcome to Kresge Crescendo, where we will be discussing how you, the librarians and caretakers of Kresge Library, could elevate Kresge's CD collection by purchasing and even archiving LCD Sound System's album, This Is Happening. We have a fantastic collection of CDs here at Kresge thanks to your hard work and dedication. I'm sure it wasn't easy to get to where we are today, which is why I'm providing you with this podcast. I'm going to make your life easier and tell you exactly how This Is Happening by LCD Sound System is going to elevate Kresge's shelf. Ryan Lance, who actually worked as a contributing editor of Stereogum while also writing essays, lists, and long-form profiles, says in an article that everything about This Is Happening functions like a knowing conclusion, an artist going all-in one more time. The first song of the album, called Dance Yourself Clean, is clear evidence for this claim that Ryan makes. I won't play the whole thing, but just listen to this part and it'll catch you off guard. If that didn't catch your attention, I don't know what will. And just imagine a whole album of this. If I were to rate this album on danceability, I'd give it a 10 out of 10. In fact, This Is Happening was able to dethrone Lady Gaga's fame on the Billboard Magazine's Dance Slash Electric Albums chart after this 5-month reign. This honestly should not be hard to believe after what you've listened for those few seconds of Dance Yourself Clean. Students at Oakland University need the freedom that comes with this music. They need the sense of letting go. College is ever so stressful, and as the librarians, you choose what to do with this grant for the CD recording. You have the ability to relieve students' stress by purchasing and archiving This Is Happening by LCD Sound System. We all know that music is a form of expression. Some songs are meant to make you feel good, while others are meant to make you more emotional. There's value to both, but this album makes you feel simple, pure joy. It's like you're not just de-stressing, but you're also just letting go of all your worries. The song that especially makes me feel like that is All I Want, although a lot of others do too. The freedom and happiness that this album brings is not to be undermined. There are many studies that suggest happiness actually improves a person's ability to study. There's an album published from the UAE on the National Library of Medicine website, and it's about the happiness of successful students. They concluded that the happiness levels were found to be correlated with their academic success. There's also another article on The World Counts that explains this a little further. The quote reads, Happiness and positive emotions create dopamine and serotonin. When these substances are released into the brain, it has a positive effect on our memory, as well as our brain's ability to learn. These chemicals allow our brain to make more connections at a faster rate. So why am I saying all this? The happiness that comes from listening to this album is actually likely to improve students' ability to successfully study. As the librarians of Kresge Library, you are what stands between students and their ability to enjoy the CD while simultaneously improving the outcome of the hours they put into their studying. The only argument you could possibly make against purchasing this album is that anyone can look it up online and listen to it that way. But let me tell you why that doesn't work. We've already determined that this is happening will improve students' ability to study effectively. The question now becomes, if a student is trying to maximize their studying, is it really smart for them to have an electronic near them, even when it's just there to listen to music? An article published in Volume 31 of the compilation called Applied Cognitive Psychology says that in a study of participants who watched a video lecture in four different cell phone conditions, those who had their phones taken away during the lecture performed the best on a test about the lecture. From this we can conclude that no, it's not smart for a college student to have their cell phone near them while studying. So having a CD available will allow students to happily listen to music while studying without having their cell phone around. Besides, as librarians, you know the difference between reading an e-book and reading a physical book, and that difference is huge. The difference between listening to music from CDs and listening to music from other outputs is just as significant. Students of Oakland University need the CD version of This is Happening, and it is up to Kresge to provide it to them. So I urge you, the librarians at Kresge, to elevate the quality of the library's CD collection by purchasing and archiving This is Happening by LCD Sound System. Thank you.
