Acapella Vocal Public Domain hymn, written circa 1839 The suffering that took place on the Trail of Tears is unfathomable. Many Cherokees who walked the Trail of Tears were Christians. According to Cherokee elders, the subtitle of this hymn refers to Jesus' suffering and sacrifice, and/or the blood shed by Cherokees along the trail. Yet the sorrow in the melody is overcome by the faith expressed in the lyrics.
