Beginning in the 19th century, Indigenous children were often forcibly removed from their families and tribes, and placed in government-sponsored schools primarily managed by the Catholic Church. Physical, sexual, and mental abuse were rampant in these schools. Children died from abuse, neglect, disease, and suicide, all under the guise of showing them God's love.
