In the 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France, there were crucial moments that affected the outcome of the game. Italy seemed to have a stronger presence and a better formation, while France's offense was lacking. Zidane scored a penalty for France, but Italy equalized with a header from Matarazzi. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, and Italy eventually won the World Cup in a penalty shootout. However, the match became memorable for Zidane's infamous headbutt on Matarazzi, resulting in a red card. Despite this, Zidane's contributions throughout his career should not be overshadowed by this incident. Italy's victory marked their first World Cup win since 1982. Alright guys what's going on welcome back to Oscars Overflow I'm your host Oscar Castillo and I already know why you guys are here you already know I'm here and you already know what I'm about to say so let's get right into it let's talk about yesterday's massive game so it's currently 2006 and yesterday was just the most amazing match ever between Italy and France in the World Cup final now this is a game that was it was one to remember one for the Bucks for sure there's a lot of crucial moments that definitely played into the outcome of this game and there's a lot of you know tidbits and details that many people would have missed but it's something that has to be recognized and has to be spoken about because if it goes unnoticed it's never going to be talked about ever again but let's get straight into it today in this episode we're going to be talking about what the lineup was some of the most crucial players that have that you know that were playing in the in the final for both Italy and France some of the players that might have not not gotten the show time or maybe the opportunity to showcase their skills in the actual match and overall I feel like there was a shift in dominance between these two teams and we'll get into that as well but just getting you know straight into it I think at the beginning of the match it literally set the tone for the rest of the match at that point from the beginning you can definitely tell who's going to win and I don't know if the if you guys as the viewers at home were able to tell as well but me sitting here from the comfort of my home watching it on TV it was more than apparent that the winner of this match was going to be Italy not not throwing shade towards France but there was literally no no sign no show of any dominance from France's team or France's defense line not even their offense was on there or on point Zidane on the other hand I feel like was one of the only players that truly like you know asserted their dominance within this game you know let's break that down a little bit more so I feel like at the beginning of the match Zidane got his penalty you know if you guys weren't watching it was to my knowledge I would say a given goal you know this happened only because in reality the foul that was committed by Marco Matarazzi on the defender for France was on Florenzo Maldula I don't think that was a given call that should have been you know awarded a penalty if you look back into the replay itself Maldula definitely flopped he didn't get touched he really wasn't you know outpowered or outmatched or a foul was even committed but regardless of the fact they awarded a penalty to France and Zidane was the one who went on and took the penalty and scored but even then look at look back at the replay Zidane you know took the penalty with grace but ultimately he was a sliver away literally a lick away from missing this but overall Zidane went on and scored the penalty and the goal was given to France and France went up 1-0 at the beginning of the match literally the seventh minute so this could have been a you know a shifting moment for Italy and saying all right we're 1-0 down we really can't do anything they're gonna park the bus they're gonna have all the defenders in the back it's gonna be impossible for us to score they're gonna hold on to the lead until the match is over yet that didn't spell defeat for Italy. Italy seemed to have went into overdrive actually and they took this more of a opportunity like all right we're 1-0 down but it is only the seventh minute and we're gonna capitalize off of this and this is shortly seen after in the 19th minute when Marco Matarazzi scores a banger of a header based off of a corner kick that was taken it was literally in the 19th minute a corner kick was taken and Marco Matarazzi was literally in the middle of the box perfectly placed and you have to keep in mind viewers he is literally 6'2 he's a monster of a human he jumps up hits it straight through the goal and the crowd goes insane he ties it up and equalizes it for both Italy and France they're now on even playing field and this is where it gets exciting. Upon the equalizing goal actually being scored by Matarazzi this literally spelled war once again for both teams come up to this point the 19th minute France was in the lead they thought they had the back secured they thought they were just going to continue with the defensive line that they had given the formation they were running so the formation France was actually running was a 4-2-3-1 meaning they had four defenders five midfielders and one forward so Thierry Henry was literally their leading forward that they had the only forward they had which I think was the biggest mistake I think the formation is what broke down France and kept them from winning the World Cup on opposed to Italy Italy was actually running a 4-4-2 this means they had four defenders four midfielders and two forwards now this had a massive impact on the game given that the formation Italy was running was better spread out everybody had support four defenders four midfielders and two forwards this was literally one of the best formations that could have been ran for this type of game knowing that it was a high-pressure game high intensity and overall the physicality of the game as mentioned before was higher than ever in the end the game did end up being a 1-1 draw after the regular time then extra time was given and this is where it got spicy so French captain Zidane he scored his penalty as we know in the seventh minute then later Matsurazi went on and scored in the 19th minute so as you can see these both men scored their goals for their respective teams and after that nothing really happened but the physicality remained however the biggest defining moment of the match I would say came in the 110th minute of extra time this is where Zidane actually goes ahead and headbutts Matsurazi in the chest in the 110th minute after regular time is over they're in overtime playing for a World Cup and he decides to headbutt plain as day Matsurazi in the chest that is insane and many of you guys may not know this but this was going to be his last match in his professional career he was going to retire after this match and to go ahead and get this heated in at an exchange of words with Matsurazi and headbutt him is insane so unfortunately after the headbutt was you know committed the referee really wasn't there to see it firsthand so of course the Italy players were going to be outraged they went up to him they were yelling at him like check the replay check the replays and they wanted repercussions to come to Zidane at the beginning maybe like a minute or two nothing was you know taken action from nothing was said nothing was done you know in accordance for the headbutt but then later after the Italian players were you know fighting for Zidane to either get a yellow card or extreme measures a red card the referee went on to the box and he checked the replay and he decided to give Zidane a red card now that hurts Zidane on his last match ever in a World Cup final decides to headbutt Matsurazi and get a red card I don't know what you know came over him or what was said but it's something must have been said that was so infuriating that he said you know what I'm gonna hit him with that soldier boy whoo and hit him directly in the chest despite the incident that happened with Zidane headbutting Matsurazi in the chest leading him to get a red card and ultimately getting ejected from the game the remaining time that for overtime that was played didn't really bring anything new to the field it kept the score 1-1 meaning they were tied and given that it's a finals game and a final match for a World Cup at that they can't really keep it 1-1 or tied so the match was leading towards a penalty shootout at the end of the day Italy emerged victorious winning a 5-3 on penalties and Fabio Grosso actually scored the winning penalty securing Italy's fourth FIFA World Cup title and their first since 1982 it's been a long time since Italy actually won a World Cup title so the victory sparked a celebration across Italy and cemented the team's place in football history so it's been a while since they've won a World Cup and finally win one in 2006 is insane so they were raving they were having fun and well deserved they won a World Cup they get to celebrate you know but despite the disappointment of defeat France's journey to the final was commendable with Dinan Dinan leading the team with the skill and determination however his controversial sending off in the final remains one of the most memorable moments of the tournament I think that overall Dinan was a man about it you know he played this final game he played all that he could he was there in mind and in spirit he left everything on that field which I think is very commendable I do have to disagree with the way he handled things though I don't think it was professional of him to headbutt Matarazzi in the chest on his final day of being a professional footballer I think that kind of ruins his his legacy a little bit because it kind of leaves people knowing him for the the World Cup headbutt only not a lot of people are going to remember him for all of the achievements and accolades that he has acquired throughout the years playing for other clubs playing for other teams in other matches so I think that was a little bit on the bitter side for me personally I would have liked him to go out you know fighting on his high horse you know he's a player who a lot of people admire and a lot of little kids idol and that's something that I think tarnishes his image at the end of his career you know he is this giant this monument of a player within the sport of soccer and to have him be outright disrespectful and headbutting another player on the pitch the biggest pitch of the world at this point because they're playing for a World Cup is crazy to me I believe he was wrong in that and I don't know if he's gonna apologize or if he's gonna give a statement on it but I'll be waiting eagerly to see and hear what he has to say overall I think that this is one of the perfect matches that has ever been played I think it has everything that a soccer game should have it had excitement it was fast-paced it had goals that were scored it was it had penalties that were taken it had fouls that were you know called fouls that were argued it had literally everything under the Sun that a perfect soccer game should have I think the players were also very physical they had a good understanding of the game and they made it very interesting for an outsider that really doesn't know soccer might want to get into it they made it very entertaining I do want to give the players their flowers though four main players to be honest for Italy I would have to say Fabio Cannavaro Fabio Cannavaro was a monster on the pitch he didn't let anything get through he literally kept the defense line in check for Italy and he kept them in iron shield he didn't let anything get through and if anything were to have gotten through who more like who's better than to have in a goal then Bufan. Bufan is literally a monster he knows the the game of soccer better than anybody else I would say he knew before anything was gonna get through if Cannavaro wasn't able to stop it he was their last line of defense and he allowed nothing to get through after Cannavaro did but that was literally the best duo that was for Italy they kept everything on check and they didn't let anything get through and ultimately it led them to a victory but on the other hand I do have to say that even though Zidane like I mentioned before he kind of left the pitch disgracefully in my eyes he really did dominate the center field and moved up a lot he kept the game controlled and he moved the ball around and he kept the progress going even though I think France really didn't have much possession of the ball this game they still had a very good run and Zidane was definitely one of the catalysts for that. Lastly I have to give the flowers back to Italy Marco Mazzarazzi he was a monster on that pitch he's a defender and he scored a goal to equalize the match and ultimately gained them access to overtime which gained them access to the penalty shootout which ultimately gained them the victory to the World Cup so many people can argue that he is the sole reason why Italy won the World Cup I don't think that's the case but I do think he was a crucial player that played a massive role in keeping Italy alive and keeping Italy in the game so I do have to give him his flowers but overall I would really like to get some feedback on your take and your perspective of the game who do you guys think was an MVP in this match who did you want to win and what do you guys think that Italy has in store for them after the World Cup do you think they might go on to get a second World Cup back-to-back or do you think this is the end for them do you think this is a one-and-done and what about France did you guys like France did you guys like their formation did you guys like the way he played let me know down in the comments and please don't forget to Like and subscribe and we'll see you guys next time thank you so much for listening see peace
