The transcription is a set of directions for Part B of a test. It explains that in this part, longer conversations will be heard, followed by questions. The questions should be answered by choosing the best answer from the four options provided. Taking notes or writing in the book is not allowed. The first conversation is about a service offered by the Student Service Center, where the woman can get a tutor for her Russian class. The service is free, as the tutors are paid by the center. The woman is relieved and thanks the person for the information. The second conversation is about cars. The man suggests that the woman needs a new car because her current car is causing her expenses and inconveniences. The woman argues that maintenance costs are not as much as a monthly payment for a new car. The man suggests getting a used company car, as they are well-maintained and less expensive than new cars. The woman agrees to consider the idea. Now read along as you listen to the directions for Part B. Part B. Directions. In this part of the test, you will hear longer conversations. Listen to a conversation about a service offered by the Student Service Center. I'm having a terrible time in my Russian class. The midterm test scores have been posted, and I fail dismally. I could help you in math or chemistry, but not in foreign languages. I'm just at my wits' end. Why don't you get a tutor? A tutor? Yeah, in the Student Service Center, they have lists of people who are willing to teach subjects they understand very well. Do you think there would be anyone who could help me with my Russian? Why not? There might be a Russian exchange student or a graduate student in the Russian department who needs spare cash. Is it very expensive? It doesn't cost at all. But you just said that a student who needs money... I mean it doesn't cost you anything at all. The Student Service Center pays their tutors from some grant they get. Wow! Maybe there's hope for me after all. Thanks for the information. Number 31. What service are the people discussing? Number 32. In what way could the service help the woman? Number 33. Why does the woman assume she has to pay? Number 34. What will the woman probably do as a result of this conversation? Questions 35 through 38. Listen to a conversation about cars. I can't believe you're still driving around in this piece of junk. I can't afford to buy a new car. I'll bet you can't afford not to buy a new car. What do you mean by that? Have you ever kept a record of how much you spend to keep this car running? Well, no. Have you ever kept a record of how much you spend to keep this car running? Well, no. But I'm sure maintenance costs are not as much as a monthly payment would be. Have you thought about your losses in pay from the days you've missed work because this thing won't start? It can't have been that much. There are also the tow truck fees, the taxi and bus fares when you have to resort to taking them, and the amount you spend on fuel for this gas guzzler of yours. All right. You've proved your point. But have you seen how much new cars cost these days? You don't have to buy a new car. Sure, I could buy a used car. But how could I be certain I wasn't getting a lemon? You know what used car salespeople are like. Why not get a used company car? You know, companies such as those that rent cars must provide their customers with new ones. The cars are well maintained and there isn't the wear and tear on them that there is on privately owned ones. I'll bet they're expensive. Not anything like a new one. I'll give this new car idea of yours some thought. Number 35. Why does the man think the woman needs a new car? Number 36. In what way is the woman's car not costing her money? Number 37. Why doesn't the woman want to buy a used car? Number 38. What does the man say about company cars? This is the end of Part B. Go on to the next page.
