Week 5 top 25 recap

In this episode of the Offseason Sports Podcast, Manny Fresh discusses the Week 4 Top 25 AP poll rankings and the results of the games. He shares his opinion on whether to buy or sell stock in each team based on their performance. Manny believes Georgia should be dropped in the polls after a close win against Auburn. He thinks Michigan did well and should maintain their ranking. Texas had a strong win against Kansas and Manny is holding onto his stock in them. Manny predicts that the Texas vs. Oklahoma game will be crucial for the Big 12 title. Penn State had a solid win and Manny sees them as a potential top five team. Washington had a good defensive game and won against Indiana. USC fell in the rankings after a close win against Colorado. Oregon won against Stanford and has a tough upcoming game against Washington. Utah lost to Oregon State and Manny thinks they should drop in the polls. Notre Dame had a thrilling win and Manny is optimistic about their potential. Alabama had a solid Hello and welcome to the Offseason Sports Podcast. This is your host, Manny Fresh, aka Manny. In this week's episode, we're going to look ahead into what the Week 4 Top 25 AP poll had each team ranked and to the results of their game and my take on whether you should buy the stock or sell the stock on each team based on their results. Let's get started. Let's start with number one, Georgia. How is Georgia going to be ranked number one after just getting out of Auburn winning 27 to 20? Well, the Beck-Bowers connection was strong. Beck hit Bowers on a 40-yard touchdown pass to seal the deal on the game. Bowers had eight receptions for 157 yards and his game-long reception was his 40-yard winner. I would sell some stock in this team, meaning I would drop them in the polls just based off the team's result and performance against Auburn. Herbie Smart even mentioned they will need to get better if they want to get to where they want to be, aka the national championship. The Dawgs will have a bigger test this week as they will host undefeated Kentucky. See how that match plays out and see if if they prevail. Coming in at number two, you have Michigan. The Wolverines go into Lincoln and beat Nebraska 45-7. J.J. McCarthy passed for two touchdowns and Blake Corham ran for 74 yards and one touchdown. Not much more you can say about this Wolverine team. They did their job and I'm holding my stock at two. They go on the road again this week against Minnesota. Coming in at number three, you have Texas. The Longhorns hosted 24 Kansas in what was supposed to be an offensive shootout. However, Jalen Daniels was scratched during warm-ups. More on him later in the show. The Longhorns hooked the Jayhawks 40-14. Quinn Ewers goes 25-35, 325 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Jonathan Brooks, however, goes 218 yards, carving up the Jayhawks. Definitely holding my stock at three with this Longhorn team. They look to be like the team and fan base that can yell at their back. They have a huge game this upcoming week for the Red River rivalry. Say that three times fast. I'm going with the Longhorns in this one. There should be a lot of fireworks. I'm interested to see what this Texas team is all about. I think this matchup against Oklahoma could be the deciding game for the Big 12. Meaning, whoever loses this game, they'll probably see each other again for the Big 12 title game. It could be a preview. There's still a lot of season left, but Texas looks like they belong in the top five, top three conversation. We'll see what happens next week. Coming in at four and five is Ohio State and Florida State. Both those teams have a bye this week. Let's see what happens after the bye week. See if there's any shake-ups in the poll. Coming in at number six is Penn State. Up a spot from last week, the Nittany Lions went on the road to the rebuilding team of Northwestern. If you haven't kept up with their news on that program, highly recommend Googling it. A lot of controversy there. They went on to beat Northwestern 41-13. At one point, this was a tied ball game at half. The Lions outscored the Wildcats 31-3. I'm buying more stock in this Penn State team. They look like a top 10 team. Should one of the top five teams slip, I think they end up slipping into the top five, should any of the top five teams. If Texas ends up slipping against Oklahoma, I can see them sliding up. Same thing with Ohio State and Florida State. Should they slip, I see Penn State clawing for those spots. Coming in at seven is Washington. No big plays allowed for Huskies QB, Michael Penix Jr. Penix still threw for 363 yards. No touchdowns and no interceptions. If you didn't get a chance to see this game, it was pretty much anything underneath. The Huskies went on to win 31-24. All of the Huskies touchdowns were on running plays. Believe that or not, Penix went 30-40, taking what the defense was giving him. They have a huge matchup in Oregon two weeks. Yes, they're on a bye next week, but they will face Oregon coming off of that bye. Coming in at number eight, you have USC falling three spots, one on the road to play a primetime in primetime's backyard. Not too sure. It was kind of a head scratcher why they fell, but there was no defense. No defense being played on either side of the ball, so that's a little concerning for USC. Caleb Williams tied his career high with six touchdowns and threw for 403 yards in a 48-41 win over primetime in the Colorado Buffalo. I will give credit where credit is due. The Buffalo team, they looked awesome playing defense. They came back from a huge deficit. If there was more time on the clock, I could see them upsetting USC in this game, but what Prime is doing to that program and bringing them to another level, we'll see what happens in the near future. They may just be a portal away from competing for a conference championship, so let's see what happens. However, USC, I can see why they were dropped. I don't know. Let's see what happens with this team that feels like they're going in reverse. They're still giving up big plays. We'll see what happens. Coming in at number nine is Oregon. The Ducks up a spot from last week with a win against Colorado. Went on the road and played Stanford. The Stanford team has only won one game so far in the season. Bo Nix threw for four touchdown passes, adding to his Heisman campaign. All four touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. That's a little concerning. The Ducks beat the Trees 42-6. The Ducks and Bo Nix have a tough matchup when they go on the road in two weeks to play Washington. They have a bye and they'll go play Washington. Coming in at 10, you have Utah who squeaked in the top 10 last week and played a very good Oregon State team. The score does not reflect how defense heavy this game was. Going into half, it was 7-0 in favor of Oregon State. The Utes lost the game, however, 21-7 and still without quarterback Cam Rising due to recovering from his torn ACL from last season. The Utes had 198 yards of total offense, so definitely does not look like a top 10 team. I don't know what the voters were looking for, but this game surprisingly was a dud for Utah and the Utes. Utah looks to bounce back at California in two weeks. They're on a bye next week. I would drop them in the polls. I'd say 19, the late teens, 17, 18, 19, somewhere in that area, but definitely not worth a top 10 team. Next up at 11, you have Notre Dame. They were dropped one spot from last week's poll as well. The Irish went into Durham and had another tough battle. The game came down to the last 30 seconds, so it was a thriller when Quadrik Essamie, sorry Quadrik if I mispronounce your name, he took it to the house for a 30-yard game-winning touchdown. Sam Hartman, 15-30 and are going to need more productivity from him if they're going to want to beat a really good Louisville team next week. Louisville, they'll probably end up being ranked. It'll be one of those ranked versus ranked matchups. Hartman was quiet. He went 15-30. I'm high on this Irish team. I believe that they can become a top 10, top five team, but they will be tested with Louisville next week. Next up is Alabama, up one spot from last week and the Tide faced Mississippi State and walked away with a victory, beating the Bulldogs 40-17. It looks like Jalen Milrow is going to be the man for Nick Saban at quarterback. That's his second week as a starter, so two consecutive weeks started for him. He torched Mississippi State's defense, throwing 10 of 12 for 164 yards. We're all rushing for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Alabama's stock has risen. They're going to need a little bit more upsets to get them into the top 10, I'd say top seven spot at most this season as far as I'm concerned. They have their issues at quarterback, but they are going to be clawing back in it. Coming in at 13 is LSU, down one spot from last week. They went into week five and traveled to Ole Miss. What turned out to be a backyard shootout, LSU lost the game 49-55. Jaden Daniels had himself a decent game, going 27 of 34 for 414 yards. No picks, however, but a costly fumble. I don't know. He just likes to get hit. He got hit and the ball popped out. Ole Miss recovered at the time of the fumble. They were down 7-0 and they were driving. With this loss, I'd sell my stock, but probably all their hope in trying to get to the playoff, they're going to need a lot of miracles to get LSU back into where they want to be. Coming in at 14 is Oklahoma. They're up two spots from last week, hosted Iowa State, and blew the Cyclones back to Iowa. The Sooners did blow an opportunity to hold the opponents to 17 points or less. That was snapping a streak of four games. Dylan Gabriel had himself a game passing for 366 yards and three touchdowns to a victory of 50-20. Gabriel is on a tear right now for this season with close to 1,600 passing yards and 15 touchdowns total. Gabriel looks to upset Texas next week. It's going to be a shootout. I'm telling you, if you're not going to be able to watch the game, listen to it, check your social media. Texas-Oklahoma is on a different level. Me being a UCF fan and them leaving the Big 12, it's going to be tough. There's nothing that really compares to this rivalry and I really appreciate watching it. I love the passion for the fans and what comes with it. It's definitely going to be missed in the Big 12, but they're moving on together so we're not going to really miss much from the Big 12 standpoint other than the conference name going with it. It's going to be in the SEC and hopefully some of the SEC fans get to experience it. Oklahoma, I'm buying some of their stock. They should move up in the polls. Next up is 15-16, North Carolina at 15, Washington State at 16. Both teams are on a buy. Let's see if they move up pending any upsets. Duke coming in at 17 is up one spot from last week and maybe the closest they'll get this season to the teens barring any more upsets in this, I guess, midway point of the season. The Blue Devils had a tough loss against Notre Dame 21-14. The loss may be compounded by a late game injury to breakout star quarterback Riley Leonard. Rolled his ankle up while trying to throw the ball. Like I said, not sure how far Duke is going to slip. They may even slip out just depending on what the polls look like. They're on a buy next week so hopefully quarterback Riley Leonard gets healthy. Coming in at 18 and up two spots from last week. They're coming in at a buy and will play Georgia Tech next week. They're on a buy but they're up two spots. 18 is Miami. Coming in at 19 is Oregon State. Should move up in the polls after the victory over top 10 Utah. You know, they flipped up. They only have one loss. It was a tough loss to Washington State. Moved them back down in the polls. Now they're back up. They beat a top 10 team. Damian Martinez was held in check only rushing for 65 yards. However, DJ Yunglele went 14 of 25, 204 yards to upset Utah 21 to 14. They move up in my opinion. Coming in at 20 is Ole Miss. The Rebels hosted LSU and upset the Tigers 55 to 49. Jackson Dart threw for 389 yards, four touchdowns. One of the four touchdowns was the game winner with 39 seconds left to end the game. The Rebels should climb up in the polls. I'd buy more stock in them. I'd move them up as well. Coming in at 21 is Tennessee. Revenge game for the Vols after a disappointing game against Florida. The Vols beat up South Carolina 41 to 20. If you remember, South Carolina upset Tennessee last year in which star quarterback Tennant Hooker had tore his ACL. The Vols defense looked sharp causing two fumbles and one interception. This win will help them climb in the polls. Again, a win over UTSA. They're going to need a lot more help in the polls as far as climbing because they need a lot more ranked or what do they call it quality wins if we're going to use the terms that the pollsters use. So they're going to need a lot more quality wins. This looks better than a UTSA win. So we'll see what happens with Tennessee. Next up is Florida Gators at 22. I'd hate to see the rest of your AP poll ballot if you have the 22nd best team in the nation as Florida. They played an undefeated, unranked Kentucky team and Kentucky beat them 33 to 14. That's all I have to say about this Florida team. Not a very good team. How they got ranked blows my mind. Definitely dropping them in the polls. Next up at 23 is Missouri. Ranked for the first time this year, Missouri went on the road and beat Vanderbilt 38 to 21. Brady Cook has the Tigers off to the best start since 2013. Cook goes 33 of 41, 395 yards and four touchdowns. The Tigers are climbing the polls and host LSU. Next coming in at 24 is Kansas. The Jayhawks traveled down to Lubbock, Texas to play the Texas Longhorns and were without star quarterback Jalen Daniels. Apparently he had a sore back. Not sure. It sounds like it was a preseason injury that's been hindering him. He ended up sitting out. Not much more I can say about that. They ended up losing 40 to 14. Kansas looked out of sync and depressed without their quarterback. They will fall out of the polls. Not sure if they'll ever make it back. They rely too much on Jalen Daniels in my opinion. I don't know what the backup looks like. I didn't get a chance to watch this game. But coming in at 25 is Fresno State. The Mikey Key show was on. Fresno State beats up Nevada 27 to 9. Keene was trigger happy in this game allowing two picks but went 26 to 34. 269 yards and two touchdowns. Fresno State has a big test. If they want to be competitive and stay in the polls, they face Wyoming next week. So here are my picks for this week. I told you I like Texas beating Oklahoma. I like Georgia Tech beating Miami. Not sure what the coverage is as far as points or who's favored. But I gave you my analysis on the Oklahoma game in Texas. I'm going to choose Georgia Tech to upset Miami. I feel like Miami is a little bit overrated this season although Tyler Van Dyke is playing lights out. We'll see what happens there. I'm going to ride with the Irish this week.
