Nyla Zaria hosts True Crime for the Girls, discussing survivor cases like Colleen Stan's. In 1977, Colleen was abducted by Cameron and Janice Hooker, enduring years of abuse and captivity. Brainwashed into believing in a secret organization, she was subjected to unimaginable torture. Janice eventually confided in a pastor, leading to Cameron's arrest and conviction. Colleen tries to lead a normal life post-captivity. Janice, with immunity, moves on with her new family. Cameron's parole is denied. The question remains: was Janice a victim or a willing participant? Hi, girlies! Welcome to another episode of True Crime for the Girls. I am your host, Nyla Zaria. Since I love a good theme, for the month of July, I will be covering survivor cases. Today, I will be discussing the Colleen Stan case. So, let's get started, girlies. On May 19, 1997, Colleen Stan was hitchhiking from Oregon to California for a friend's birthday. At this time, hitchhiking was common and Colleen had done it many times before. As she was hitchhiking, Cameron and Janice Hooker, a young couple in a blue Dodge Colt, offered her a ride. After initially seeming safe, Colleen, Cameron, and Janice, and their baby, stopped at a gas station where Colleen reportedly had a gut feeling something was off, but she ignored it. Colleen reports that she ignored her gut feeling because they had their baby with them. Colleen continued to travel with the couple. As time progressed, Cameron pulled the car over and forced her at knife point into a homemade wooden box that he placed over her head, blindfolding her, muffling her screams, and making it impossible for her to move. They drove her to their home, Cameron and Janice's home, took her to the basement, stripped her, chained her, and began what would become years of unimaginable abuse. Colleen Stan was born on December 31, 1956, making her a Capricorn. Over the course of seven years, Colleen was held captive in Cameron and Janice's home. Colleen was held in a coffin-sized box under Cameron and Janice's waterbed. A waterbed is really insane. She was kept in the box for 23 hours a day. She couldn't sit up. She was in complete darkness. The only time she was let out was to be assaulted, tortured, or to do chores. Then she was put back into the box. In 1978, Janice gave birth to a second child on the waterbed, essentially right above Colleen's head. Eventually, Cameron let Colleen out of the box more regularly, as she performed chores around the house and babysat the couple's two children. According to court documents, she got a job as a hotel maid a few miles away from the house. When she was allowed out of the box, she was presented as a live-in nanny or housekeeper to the neighbors. Cameron brainwashed Colleen into believing he was part of a secret organization called The Company. The Company would harm her family and her if she tried to escape, which obviously isn't true, but at the time, Colleen believed it. Cameron even made Colleen sign a fake slave contract and refer to him as Master. Over the next seven years, she was physically, sexually, and emotionally abused. Colleen was raped, whipped, hung by her wrists, and electrocuted. She was often chained, blindfolded, gagged, and kept nude. Cameron constructed bondage devices such as a stretching rack, a body frame, and gags all for Colleen. This next part is really crazy. So Colleen was allowed to visit her family by herself in 1981, but when she hung out with her family, she did not reveal that she was being held captive. She didn't reveal this information to her family because she didn't want her family to be hurt or face the consequences of revealing what was going on. The next day, she came back to her family's house for a second visit. This time, she was with Cameron posing as her boyfriend. Her family took a photo of her and Cameron smiling together. Since Colleen's family had not heard from her in a while, her family just assumed she joined a cult and they were just happy to finally be in contact with her again. By this time, Colleen was so psychologically broken that she didn't even tell her family what was going on and she willingly left with Cameron. In 1981, Janice, remember Cameron's wife, she confided in a pastor about the past seven years of keeping Colleen hostage. The religious leader advised that both she and Colleen and Janice's children leave and turn Cameron into the authorities. While Cameron was at work, Janice took her children and Colleen to her parents' house, where Colleen called her father. Cameron Hooker was arrested and found guilty on seven felony counts, including kidnapping and sexual assault. He was later sentenced to 104 years in prison. As of 2025, Colleen has attempted to live a normal life, though the impact of her captivity remains with her. She does documentaries and interviews occasionally. Janice is out and about since she had full immunity in exchange for a testimony. Janice is not in the limelight and she is raising her two children from her relationship with Cameron and she married again. Cameron was attempting to get parole, however, he was denied. Thank goodness. So what truly happened on May 19th, 1977? Was Janice a willing participant or another victim? Thank you all for listening to another episode of True Crime for the Girls.
