Nothing to say, yet
Nia and Nate have taken over as hosts of the podcast. They discuss various sports, including baseball, softball, basketball, hockey, track and field, golf, tennis, lacrosse, swim and dive, gymnastics, water polo, and women's gymnastics. They provide updates on the teams' performances, wins, losses, and upcoming events. They also mention the firing of the strength and conditioning coach and the need for Michigan's women's gymnastics team to improve in order to qualify for nationals. The hosts emphasize the importance of finishing the season strong and preparing for postseason play. Hey everyone, it's been a minute, and we sound different. My name is Nia, I'm a freshman. My name is Nate, I'm also a freshman. So we took over for the previous host, Noah, we're going to be doing the podcast from now on. So yeah, a little bit about ourselves, we're both freshmen. And our icebreaker for today is your favorite walk-up song, mine would be Long Time by Playboy Cardi. Mine would be Smooth Criminal, the Glee cast version. So yeah, today we're going to jump into some recaps of different sports, talk about it a little bit, have the baseball beat on to talk about their first pitch edition, review some of the games that have been played, and then preview upcoming series. And then we're going to finish off with a preview for what's to come for Michigan Athletics. So jumping right into it, for baseball, they just went 0-3 in three games in the college baseball series against two ranked opponents. Really strong test to start out the year, softball went 3-0 in Santa Barbara. Check out Sam Gibson's coverage about their offensive surge out in California, however later on in the week they traveled to Long Beach State where they fell to a slumping Dirtbag squad, an upset loss. Women's basketball fell to number two Ohio State in a rivalry game. Michigan really struggled to find a groove offensively and struggled with turnover. Men's basketball returned star point guard Doug McDaniels, but still fell to Rutgers, fitting the trend of the struggling team. In other news, Michigan fired longtime strength and conditioning coach John Sanderson. This was after an alleged altercation with Juwan Howard. Some details are still to come. Check out Paul Nazar's Sports Monday about that where he reviewed Sanderson's tenure with the team and also his departure. And then ice hockey split in a way series with Minnesota, so the last series of conference play they dropped the game night one, were pretty thoroughly outplayed, did not look super competitive, and then night two found a way to scratch across a victory going into the Big Ten tournament. And this was really emblematic of what we've seen from Michigan this entire year where they've split a lot of conference series, however it looked a lot better right coming after the Notre Dame series where they finally earned that sweep and were competitive with Minnesota who's obviously one of the tougher opponents that they're going to see in Big Ten play and got some of that momentum back heading into Big Ten play. Obviously though, the worst part of the second game was the five goals they let in in the third period which led them to an overtime victory. And this is really, well this showcases Michigan's, I don't know what to say, what are we going to say about this? They let in five goals, I don't know, we can just talk about looking ahead. Looking ahead to the Big Ten conference championship, they are going to be squaring off against Notre Dame in Ann Arbor at Yost for a three game set, or a better three game set. They, obviously they swept Notre Dame two weeks ago, they have that strong momentum going in, but they're still a little bit on the bubble with the pair-wise rankings, there's no guarantee that they'll make the NCAA tournament. Right now they're ranked 14, they have to be top 16 in the country to make it into the tournament so they really are looking for a strong weekend against Notre Dame to seal their way in and maybe look to upset Michigan State in the second round or whoever they would end up playing. Likely Michigan State in the second round in order to cement themselves, get a couple more solid victories under their belt. And looking to other Michigan sports, in women's track and field, senior Asia Lawrenson and junior Savannah Sutherland are going to the NCAA Indoor National Championships for the 60 meter and 400 meter respectively. Michigan did not place in the event and you can check out Noah Rangel's coverage on this. Men's golf was at the Invitational at the Ford, they placed 4th of 8, Hunter Thompson placed 8th overall, and then they will be going to the Louisiana Classics next week. Men's tennis was at the Diablos College Invitational where they came 4th, with number 18 senior Gavin Young defeating ASU number 9 I believe. Men's tennis was at the Diablos College Invitational where they came in 4th, with number 18 senior Gavin Young defeating ASU number 9 Murphy Cassone, which was an upset. Men's lacrosse played Colorado, they remain undefeated after a 13-8 win, and they are currently ranked 6th overall. Men's swim and dive competed at the Big Ten Championships where they placed 3rd overall. Junior Gal Groomey and senior Ben Sabatos earned Big Ten Championships in their respective events of the 200 yard butterfly crown and the 100 yard freestyle. Men's tennis downed Hawaii 4-1 after taking the doubles point. They won the next two matches en route to a 4-1 victory. Men's gymnastics beat number 1 Oklahoma mainly due to its strategic performance and mistakes from Oklahoma. You can check out Gabriella Rodriguez's coverage on this. Water polo went 2-1 with wins over two ranked teams, yet fell to the number 10 Princeton ranked matchup. Men's lacrosse, who are 9th in the country, bested Delaware 13-8, with senior Michael Boehm becoming the second Wolverine with over 200 points in a career. The current school record is 213. He is currently at 203. And lastly, women's gymnastics lost a close one to number 1 Oklahoma. The Wolverines had a season high on the bars, but they underperformed on the vault. Women's gymnastics is currently 9-1 in the Big Ten Conference, however, a majority of their meets have ended in close wins. Yeah, they've had some strong performances and they look really strong in the conference and even against number 1 Oklahoma, it's a strong barometer where they can measure themselves up to and see what they're going to look like in postseason play and even though it is in the regular season, it gives kind of that postseason feel with the stress and pressure to perform at a high level and I think that that's really strong for a team to experience going into postseason play where the goal of this team is probably going to be to compete for a national championship or at least somewhere close. Michigan, last year, were really close for qualifying for nationals, but after a tie with LSU, they did not for the first time since 2018. Yeah, Michigan really needs to work on their small mistakes, ensure a second Big Ten chance and a chance to qualify for nationals. The team obviously returned a lot of players, has a lot of strong production and expectations are obviously going to be really high looking into postseason play, so as much as they can finish out the season strong will be even better. They have two meets left, one against Georgia, one against Denver, both at home. Those will be good ways to kind of round out the season before the Big Ten Championships in late March. They'll get their feet under them and have a chance to, I don't know, oh, this is terrible. This is terrible. What was I talking about? I don't even know. Michigan has two meets left, one against Georgia, one against Denver, both at home. They'll look to get their feet under them before the Big Ten Championships in late March, before the beginning of postseason play where it really matters. So as the regular season rounds out they kind of have had their toughest duel behind them and will look to have really strong performances in the next two before the Big Ten Championships starts.
