The Mi-28M attack helicopter is an upgraded version of the Mi-28, designed as a highly capable anti-armor attack helicopter. It has been equipped with next-generation missiles and rocket armaments, as well as a new fuselage design, modernized engines, and advanced weapons. The helicopter also features an on-board armament suite that allows it to detect and destroy enemy targets in any weather conditions. The Mi-28M can launch multiple Kamikaze drones and has improved cockpit equipment and armor. It will be fitted with a new guided missile with a range of over 25 kilometers. This missile, codenamed Article 305, is designed to destroy armored vehicles and fortifications. The Mi-28M attack helicopter is similar to a lot of Russian military hardware. Its development began in the 1980s, but progress was slowed with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In recent years, the design was revisited and then upgraded, and unlike other Russian helicopters, the Mi-28 was never intended to serve in a secondary transport capacity. The all-weather, day and night, two-seat Mi-28 has been seriously updated to the Mi-28MM Night Hunter standard, and it should be seen as a highly capable anti-armor attack helicopter. The all-weather, day and night, two-seat Mi-28 has been seriously updated to the Mi-28MM Night Hunter standard, and it should be seen as a highly capable anti-armor attack helicopter. It has been equipped with next-generation missiles and rocket armaments. In the course of joint work, we focused on expanding the range of air-launched weapons of the helicopter's airborne armament as the basic area of improving Mi-28 and baseline helicopters. Chief Designer of the Combat Helicopters Program at the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center, Vitaly Shcherbina, told TSS on Tuesday. For the purpose of solving this task, the airborne armament of the Mi-28MM embraced next-generation round-the-clock missiles, including multi-role munitions allowing the gunship to strike targets without entering the area of the enemy's effective air defenses and also next-generation rockets of a broad range of their employment and enhanced capacity, as well as bombing weapons of various caliber, added Shcherbina. The designer also explained that the chopper has received an on-board armament suite that will allow it to detect and destroy enemy targets in any weather conditions while operating outside of the enemy's effective air defenses. The advanced defensive aid suite also enables the helicopter to successfully repel attacks from the potential enemy's ground and airborne air defense systems, while the on-board communications system features network-centric capabilities. The on-board communications and telecom system offers a possibility for the helicopters to interact in a group, operate in air and ground communications networks, implementing the network-centric methods of weapons control on the battlefield, aid to get information on the enemy and friendly forces in a secure jam-resistant mode timely and without delays since Shcherbina. According to the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center, which is a subsidiary of the Russian Helicopters Group within the state tech corporation Rostec, the Mi-28MM gunship performed its debut flight on October 12, 2016, and is an upgraded version of the Mi-28 in combat helicopter. However, the Nankhunter gunship has considerable differences from the baseline version. The upgraded variant features a new fuselage design, modernized engines and an auxiliary power plant, new on-board electronic warfare equipment, and advanced weapons. The layout of the gunship's fuselage nose section has also been altered to mount a new target sight system, as well as a mass-mounted radar, a new sighting and piloting navigation system, and an improved radar station. The Mi-28MM also offers a dual-control system, while the Mi-28 can place the operator in the front cabin. Which limited the piloting capabilities, the upgraded version includes full-fledged control from both cabins. This provides enhanced situational awareness for both the commander and pilot, and is meant to facilitate interoperability and increase the quickness of making decisions in a complex combat environment. The Mi-28MM attack helicopter will also be able to launch multiple Kamikaze drones upon entering a designated area. Automated interaction between Mi-28MM helicopters and various reconnaissance drones will help monitor the designated area without entering the enemy's effective air defenses, said Shcherbina, and provide accurate target acquisition and exercise control of the combat employment of next-generation light multipurpose missiles in real-time, and also retransmit telephone and telecode messages between interacting helicopters, aircraft, aircraft platforms, and ground-based command posts in the designated area of combat operations. Mi-28M and helicopters to be armed with new weapons, President Vladimir Putin said in May at a meeting on defense industry in Sochi that it was necessary to supply 100 Mi-28M helicopter gunships by 2028. The Army Standard writes how Mi-28MM is distinguished from predecessors, and which upgrades are in store. Putin said the Army aviation has to be rapidly armed with onboard defense systems with improved characteristics and weapons with increased range, and 100 upgraded Mi-28MM shall be supplied to the troops. The choice of the helicopter is not accidental. Mi-28MM is the most technologically advanced rotorcraft with a big upgrade potential. Its predecessor Mi-28M fought in Syria. One helicopter crashed near Homs, but the Defense Ministry said it was not downed. Mi-28M export option was engaged by the Iraqi Army to free residential settlements from terrorists and perform properly. However, combat operations in Syria exposed some drawbacks. It became clear that helicopter defense and arms need an upgrade. The helicopter has been upgraded according to the Syrian experience and meets all the requirements of the Defense Ministry. With all respect to Mi-24 and Mi-35, Mi-28M is the most advanced helicopter adapted to modern general combat. Mi-28MM can be engaged in the dark and bad weather, expert Alexey Leonkov said. Mi-28MM began flight trials in October 2016 at the Mil-Moscow helicopter plant. The first OP-1 prototype took off. Mi-28M differs from predecessors by a change in the front part. The cockpit canopy is not that visible, but the view for the pilot was expanded. A scheme checked on Mi-28UB training helicopter was borrowed. A second set of controls was installed in the front part of the cockpit. It helps train the crew and increases survivability in real combat. Cockpit equipment was also changed. Pilots receive more information about the surrounding situation and operation of all units. The cockpit armor has been reinforced to protect against 20mm bullets and shells. New design and modern materials increase the resistance to damage. Thus, composite materials of the lifting rotor blades sustain a hit of 30mm shells without fatal destruction. The craft keeps the chance to safely land. The fuel system has been upgraded to rule out fire or fuel explosion. The onboard computer operation has been accelerated dozens of times. The main radar antenna was moved from the front to the lifting rotor and is covered by a spherical cowl. The crew can effectively engage precision weapons, including missiles and radar homing. The controls allow the crew to land in any weather and time of the day. The defense capability of the helicopter has increased. The President S-Complex for helicopters was demonstrated as protection from all anti-aircraft weapons, most of manpads, which are the main threat to such craft. Tests confirmed President S's effectiveness against single missiles and if the attack comes from various directions, Leonkov said. The Mi-28M equipment allows including a helicopter or a group of them into various combat forces. The automatic controls have been mated, the Army standards said. Russia's modernized Mi-28MM attack helicopter to get new guided missile. Russia's modernized Mi-28MM attack helicopter will be fitted with a new guided missile with a range of more than 25 kilometers, an aircraft industry source told TSS on Wednesday. At the moment, the maximum range of guided missiles used by Russian combat helicopters does not exceed 15 kilometers. A new missile codenamed Article 305 is being designed for Mi-28MM. It is intended to destroy armored vehicles and reinforce concrete fortifications in daytime and at night. The range of the missile will exceed 25 kilometers, the source said, adding that one helicopter will carry up to four such guided missiles on each of its two pylons. The missile will be guided by the onboard inertial navigation system. Information about the target's location will be uploaded into the system during the launch. The helicopter, in its turn, will receive the information from its own detection systems or from the integrated troop and weapon management system. During the final stage of its flight, the new missile will activate the homing device to locate the target in the designated area and to destroy it. The helicopter's crew will receive a video signal from the missile via a protected communication channel. TSS has been unable to officially confirm the information at the time of the publication. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told the State Duma, lower house of parliament, committee on defense, on March 11 that new guided missiles with increased range have been developed for Russian attack helicopters on the outcomes of the military operation in Syria. Thanks to our experience in Syria, our helicopters have received light multifunctional guided missiles.
