A woman named Violet Sinclair visits Mr. Blackwood's office to ask for help in locating her missing father. Mr. Blackwood agrees to assist her and suggests they go to her father's bar to question people. Violet agrees to go, but clarifies that she is only interested in finding her father and will only pay Mr. Blackwood if they are successful. Mr. Blackwood assures her that he always gets paid. This knock wasn't like any other knock I had heard on my office door, no. This knock was a light, easy gesture. When I turned my back to see who was there, I questioned if the malt whiskey I had moments ago was playing tricks on me. Standing there, in the old wooden doorframe, was one of the most beautiful dames I had ever seen. She had held a cigarette, outward, in her left hand. Her eyes scanned the room, then looked at me, up and down. She finally said something to me. Is this the office of Mr. Blackwood? I was hoping to acquire his services tonight. I was glad to hear work had come into the office, of course. Business had been slow. But what does a delicate girl like her need from a man like me? I sat down at my desk, and finally answered her question. You made it to the right place, sweetheart. She slowly walked into the room, with the clack of her heels echoing faintly. She wore a long red dress that sparkled in the shine of my desk lamp. Her walk commanded the room. Leaning over my desk, she began to speak to me again. So, I'm standing in the same room as the legendary Mr. Blackwood. What an honor, truly. I've heard some stories about you, mister. Especially your expedition to Germany with Dr. Manning. And might I say, a man who can slug a Nazi square in the jaw like you, definitely deserves to be celebrated. That Dr. Manning insisted on publishing our journey. I'm just glad I could be of use to her. But I appreciate the recognition, Miss... Oh, of course. How rude of me. The name's Violet. Violet Sinclair. Well, Miss Sinclair, why exactly do you need my help? Has your husband gotten into trouble with the Vipers? Husband? Oh, Mr. Blackwood, you flatter me. No, no, my father went missing after a business deal of his. It was about four weeks now. I would be lying if I said I wasn't beginning to worry. So I've come here hoping you can help me locate his whereabouts. A shame. I would have expected such a charming young woman like yourself to be walking down the aisle by now. Marriage is a petty game I don't plan on playing for quite a while, Mr. Blackwood. But do you think you could help me find my father? I'd imagine it's a simple task for a man like you. Of course I can. What kind of business was your father doing exactly? Maybe it could help me pinpoint where he might have gone? Well, he owns a small bar downtown. I believe he was going to meet with a new vendor for his alcohol, but ever since then no one has heard from him. Well, Miss Sinclair, do you have anything to do this evening? What exactly are you asking me, Mr. Blackwood? Well, I plan on going down to this bar your father owns to question some people. And, well, I figured you might want to tag along. That's all. I suppose I'll tag along. No, I'm only coming to help look for my father. And you only get paid when we find him. I always get paid, Miss Sinclair.
