The speaker found a Cult of Pedagogy podcast on using podcasts in classrooms fascinating. Key insights included how audio boosts reading comprehension and curiosity, especially for older students—a surprising finding. They plan to share this with their mother, an English/Spanish teacher, noting its value for ESL learners and exposing students to diverse dialects beyond just the teacher’s voice. Additionally, they suggested using podcasts in elementary schools post-recess to help refocus restless kids while sparking inquiry for upcoming units, blending engagement with curriculum standards effectively. I really find the concept of podcasts in classrooms to be a really interesting and engaging way to uh just incorporate student learning and curiosity and like promote curiosity of students. Um, I really thought the um Cult of Pedagogy um podcast was really interesting and just the way that they um talked about and walked through the different benefits of podcasts in classrooms, um and just ways that teachers can use them to help meet their academic standards, um and like as a way to just promote like student questions and like um curiosities. Um, I also thought it was really interesting and I'd never heard of how audio and podcasts can be used to improve like um student learning and um and then also their like reading skills and comprehension. Um, and then I think it was really interesting too how they mentioned that that becomes um more important as students get older. Uh, that's not something I would have guessed, that students need to listen to things more as they get older. I thought would think that listening comprehen-- uh listening would have a bigger impact um in reading um and reading like the learning of reading uh when students are younger. But it yeah, it really interested me and I think I'm going to share that with my mom who's an English teacher uh right now, not someone learning to be a teacher, but is actively one. Um, she teaches in a secondary level. I think that could be something that's really beneficial in her classroom, especially since my hometown school has a lot of students who are their English isn't their first language. So they're English language learners. Um, it's also something I think she she teaches both Spanish and English, so I think in her Spanish classroom too, it could be a really good way like podcasts um could be a really good way for students to yeah, ask questions, hear different people speak in Spanish and or whatever language a student might be learning, but in my mom's case it'd be Spanish. Um, I think that would be a really good way uh because I think my Spanish learning in high school was limited in some ways because I only heard Spanish really from my Spanish teacher, um versus like being able to hear Spanish from other voices and from other yeah, just people who speak the language or even just other Spanish teachers. I think could be really beneficial, um especially with like all the different dialects um of language. I think that could be a really cool opportunity for students to yeah, just really absorb and learn and hear like how different people say different words, even though it's like the same pronunciation, how it can be distinct and unique from one word to the next. Yeah. I also think that podcasts could be a really cool opportunity in like an elementary classroom, um like post-recess or something like that. Like you come inside and everyone's kind of still like antsy, but I think it'd be a good way to like kind of get everyone refocused of like you come in and then you listen to the podcast um that's maybe spurring new science questions for the unit of science that you're gonna be doing next. Um and then you are coloring or walking around the classroom, um or just yeah, engaging in a way that promotes your own thoughts and curiosity while also um getting students back and focused in the content and the learning uh rather than being antsy and crazy from recess.
