This is meant to be the second piece in a three-piece set for solo classical piano with jazz compatibility. "Mull" depicts the thought process of a problem that can't quite be figured out; yet life is still beautiful in the frustration of unsolvedness. We were up at the family cabin when I woke up at 4am with the first four measures going in my head. So I got up to write it out most of it, looking out at the lake while it turned from dark to daylight.
