Nothing to say, yet
In this podcast episode, the speaker discusses the meaning behind the phrase "do this in remembrance of me" that Jesus said during the Last Supper. They explain that participating in the Lord's Supper is an important practice for Christians, as it proclaims Jesus' death and points to the future eternal banquet in heaven. The speaker also emphasizes the spiritual significance of breaking the bread and taking the cup, symbolizing the body and blood of Jesus, as well as the importance of self-denial and dying to sin. They encourage believers to focus their lives on the cross of Jesus and to live in remembrance of Him. The message concludes with a reminder of John 3:16 and the love of God for the world. Welcome to Christian Carrier. Thank you for joining me. Thank you for your listening. For, blessed are those who hear the word of God and do it. My name is Gila Nwola. Today, podcast episode fifteen. And the Lord Jesus declared, Do this in remembrance of me. What does he mean by that? Without any further delay, Let's get to it. You are all Christian Carriers. Christians speak to Christians. Jesus is coming soon. Are you ready? Are you ready? Pending his death, The Lord Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples. After they have eaten and drank, Jesus said to them, Do this in remembrance of me. To be honest, I could safely say that Christians all over the world faithfully observe this commandment by participating in the table of the Lord. That is an inescapable aspect of the Lord's invitation to every born again believer. To this point, I would like to encourage all Christians who still doubt about the spiritual meaning of this practice, to do it in a spirit of love and holiness. Beside the collective dimension of the Lord's Supper, there is another important aspect that we tend to forget, and which carries spiritual message that we are going to share with you in this podcast. For God so loved the world, That he gave his only begotten Son, That whosoever believeth in him Should not perish, but have everlasting life. No greater love could there ever be Than when my Savior died, so we could be redeemed. No greater words have my eyes ever gleaned Than the marvelous words recorded in John 3.16. For God so loved the world, That he gave his only begotten Son, That whosoever believeth in him Should not perish, but have everlasting life. Heavenly Father, our Lord and Savior, We hold your holy name in reverence. We lift your name up high, and we thank you for your blessings on us. We know we are sinners with unclean lips, but you allow us to use your word so that people may know the truth that saves. Come and teach us, and open our understanding. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Like we mentioned it earlier, the celebration of the Passover is first and foremost about eating the lamb. And the Lord Jesus says, do this in remembrance of me. All Christians know it is important to participate in the table of the Lord. The first reason is that, according to the Apostle Paul, as often as we eat the Lord's supper, we proclaim the Lord's death till he comes back. 1 Corinthians 11, verse 26. Secondly, the Lord's supper or the communion points forward to the final eternal banquet talked about in Matthew 8, verse 11. In this passage, mention is made of the table of Abraham, where the faithful children of God will sit at the same table with him, with Isaac, Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. My prayer is that, one day, we could all gather around that table where will be nothing but endless joy. May those who have not yet experienced divine salvation, please come join the sinners who have been redeemed. Come to the table. Apart from eating the Lord's supper, there is another aspect of paramount importance to the disciples of Jesus. In fact, the commandments, do this in remembrance of me, is not limited only to the Lord's supper. And I would like you to understand that, we eat the Passover lamb in remembrance of Jesus. We eat the Passover lamb in remembrance of a mighty act of God of extreme importance. The scripture says, And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you. This passage says, when Jesus took bread, he broke it. You may be wondering in what way the body of our Lord Jesus broken. Well, in breaking the bread, Jesus declared that his body was broken, in the sense that he was crucified on the cross. This is the spiritual lesson Jesus wants to teach his followers. By calling his people to do this in remembrance of him, the Lord Jesus means that all believers should focus their lives on his cross. The commandment, do this in remembrance of me, is a powerful call from Jesus to us, to break our body of sin. Jesus is just calling his church to perpetuate this action by applying it to herself. The Apostle Peter explains very well, the intent of Jesus to his listeners saying, For, even here unto where ye called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving as an example, that ye should follow his steps. 1 Peter 2 verse 21 Here, the Apostle Peter says that all believers have been called to suffer like Christ suffered. See, a person who has consciously decided that he will accept suffering for the sake of Christ, has truly left the world and its attachment behind. He has chosen to deny himself and his fleshly desires. He made the firm decision to identify himself with Christ and his suffering. Praise the Lord! The same Peter says, For as much then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind, for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin. 1 Peter 4 verse 1 Praise the Lord! Now, in which way our bodies are broken? We have just said that Jesus broke his body for us. When he broke the bread, it is his body that he was breaking. Now, in which way, as we are supposed to follow the example of the Lord Jesus, in which way, as disciples, our bodies are broken? Well, our body is broken when our old sinful nature is destroyed by crucifying it. This is what the apostle Paul writes in Romans chapter 6 verse 6. He writes, Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, meaning here with Jesus, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Praise the Lord! You know, the cross is the spiritual instrument that allows the destruction of our corrupt nature. In Mark chapter 8 verse 34, when Jesus had called people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Praise the Lord! My question is this, what is to be done when we apply the cross to our lives? The answer is self-denial according to Mark 8 verse 33. The expression self-denial refers to the idea of dying to sin. It refers to the idea of putting an end to the activity of our old nature that constantly leads us to sin. Through self-denial, we allow God's power to transform us. Now, by breaking the bread or by crucifying our sin on the cross, we are renouncing our old man which pushes us to ungodliness and worldly lust. Get this, regarding the above passage, Jesus doesn't call us to hate only our own lives through self-denial. He went further and said we should hate our fathers, we should hate our mothers, we should hate even our wives and our children, our brethren and sisters as well. Praise the Lord! Luke 14 verse 26. Hallelujah! The passage in Luke chapter 14 verse 26 we've just read, the word hate does not mean aversion, but the word hate should be undertood in the sense of sacrifice. To hate in the context of Luke chapter 14 verse 26 is to offer to God what you love most, is to give to God what you love most in the world. The sacrifice of bound families and the consecration of oneself to God constitutes in Luke 14 the cost that must be paid by the one who follows the Lord. Jesus uses the word hate to highlight the enormity of the expense for the disciples. We must return to God all that we are and everything we like. The priority to Jesus is what the disciples is called to consider. Hallelujah! Now, eating the Lord's supper is one thing that we do, and renouncing ungodly things continually is another. When Jesus called His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him, He is simply telling them to go through the suffering He went through as well. He means He has given them an example that they should do as He has done to them. In John chapter 13 verse 15, Jesus tells them, For I have given you an example that ye also should do as I have done to you. What Jesus did with His body, He is calling the church to do as well. Pray the Lord! I could not end my message without mentioning what Jesus did with His blood for us. Hallelujah! In fact, Jesus shed His blood and is calling us to do as well. All these commandments refer to the fight of the believer against sin. The author to Hebrews is clear. He says that as far as sin is concerned, the believer has to be awake and fight with energy, courage and determination. He says, ye have not yet resisted unto blood striving against sin. Remember, the night before Jesus Christ was crucified, He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane and struggled with the weight of our sin. Then His sweat became like a great drop of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22 verse 44, When He was in agony, Jesus did not yield, but He won sin at the cross. In 1 Corinthians chapter 11 verse 25, Paul writes, In the same manner, He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. This, do as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. Pray the Lord! Like Jesus shed His blood for our sin, the apostle Paul says we should also demonstrate this through our aversion to sin. Like how Jesus' sweat became like a great drop of blood falling down to the ground while striving with our sin, the disciples should also resist sin unto blood. Hallelujah! I just want you to understand that the command, Do this in remembrance of me, has twofold meaning. Apart from the fact that we eat the bread and drink the wine, which are symbolic of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, it also means that the believer should die to sin. Didn't the apostle Peter say, He himself, meaning Jesus, Jesus bore our sin in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. So that, Jesus bore our sin in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin. So that we might die to sin. This means, Jesus died on the cross with our sin, and we, on our turn, we should die to sin. 1 Peter 2 verse 24. Praise the Lord! In conclusion, let's retain that, as a believer, our way to proclaim the death of Jesus till He comes back, as written in 1 Corinthians 11 verse 26, is through self-denial. Our body of sin has to be broken like Jesus broke His own. The command, Do this in remembrance of me, is nothing else than the call to carry our cross. Now, by applying the cross to our lives, we are destroying our own nature. By applying the cross to our lives, we are simply obeying the commandment, Do this in remembrance of me. You know, following Jesus has a high price attached to it. The commandment, Do this in remembrance of me, is not specifically about the Last Supper. This explains why Paul said that, as often as we do it, we proclaim His death till He comes. Now, the question is, what do we do exactly? Well, whenever we focus our lives on His cross, on the cross of Jesus, we are then proclaiming the death of Jesus. Hallelujah! This means that, the suffering of the believer, our death to sin, is the reflection of the death of Jesus on the cross. Yes, every faithful Christian must participate in the table of the Lord. But, the truth is that, by taking only the Lord's Supper regularly without breaking the body of sin, will not bring any change in our lives. As long as our heart is still attached to the things of the past, nothing will change in our lives. However, if we live and walk on the steps of our Lord Jesus, if we do things in remembrance of Him, if we focus our lives on the cross of Jesus, only then can we allow change. When Jesus calls His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him, it is not only an invitation to participate in His Supper, but also and above all, to break the body of sin, our old nature through self-denial. It is a call of Jesus to us to kill our flesh and give up our lives to Him. Well, this is the end of this message. If this message convinced you, please share it. If God wills it, we will meet you next time. Shalom. The greater words have my eyes ever gleaned than the marvelous words recorded in John 3.16.
