And I'm sitting here having an initial conversation with Mark Overholtz. I live at 5604 Rhodes Avenue in Unit 101. First, all your information. Oh, I don't know about that. I'm September 16th. So at this very moment, I'm going to document this by going to the camera and, in fact, taking a time stamp photo of us having lunch at Ana Aviva. And off we go. Now we have evidence. Now, let's continue the conversation, Mark. What are we talking about today, Mark? Your experience working on Jurassic Park and turning it into a series similar to the author called The Park. And it's my idea, right? It is your idea, yes. And I've invited Mark to be my co-creator. So that's down here. Provided that we establish a working style, which we... We have a friendship, but we don't have a working style yet. And so what we need to require here, we need to establish a working style. You got it in the next couple of weeks. We're going to develop a beat outline based on my experience at the earliest genesis of what became the Jurassic Park film. And I'll leave you to accomplish that. Michael Crichton had had the idea for resurrecting dinosaurs from mosquito DNA trapped in memory. And he was probably... I think he might have been inspired originally by an article in Army around 19... So he had the idea in the 1970s. He saw an article in 1980. And by the time his career was in sugar and he was drinking vodka and smoking coke, according to what he told me, he said, This is not rumor. This is Michael. And I worked with him for over a decade. He told me this supermarket he trolled for pussy in between marriages. And I still remember him. I tried it a couple of times. It never worked. I was a six-penny man for the rich. But at the time, Michael... I'd known Michael for about a couple of years Michael's wife, to whom I was married at that time, was film director Martha Coolidge. She was also later the president of the Directors Guild of America. She was the first female president of the Directors Guild of America. And I had a child, Martha's only child, my only child, with Martha. And I had met Michael, initially, when Martha directed the pilot for a television show. Which I just watched, randomly. With David Rashid and... I think it would be a Dory... what's it do? That sounds right. I don't remember her name. But I've watched it for three episodes on Amazon. So, after Martha directed the pilot, a sledgehammer, Anne-Marie Martin invited us to her boyfriend's condo in Marina Del Ray, 20th Avenue. And so we go there for dinner. And we're going to meet Anne-Marie. And I met her because I visited the set of Sledgehammer. And we show up for dinner. And Anne-Marie, I don't see her boyfriend. And the last thing I watched was a little white guy. Biggest white guy I've ever seen. Biggest white guy I've ever been in a room with. And I went to college with Larry Bird. But Larry Bird was dismissed. And I tutored Larry Bird for a minute while he was going to the institute. So, because of that issue. Anyway, we talked. The first thing we always talk about is Michael. He's now a faculty colleague. And he's had that conversation since he was taught. So, he has really funny, witty lines about being taught. But, immediately, we find out, because I've seen in early magazines, and at that point, when I have that dinner, I'm the Hollywood leading expert on Macintosh. And I'm published everywhere. All the major press about being Hollywood's potential career. And my partner in Macintosh is Ron Cobb. The greatest, the greatest, conceptual designer in Hollywood history. He did all the movies. Star Wars. Yes, yes. Aliens. He did them all. He was a good guy. And I was his main key. He was, Martha had lived at his, above his garage, at Santa Monica on Margarita. The night after my first date on December 24, 1984, my first date with Martha, we went to see Annie Alexander at the Guild. She had just gotten into the Guild. And it was a career screening at the Guild, of her and myself. Him and my husband. Next morning, it's Christmas Day. Christmas Eve, we come back from the screening, Martha's going down the stairs of her condo in Breckwood, and falls from the second step. I've always said, she fell in love. And she fell to the bottom, and completely fucked up already. So what did I do on the first date? I picked her up in my arms, and walked up the stairs, and put her on the bed, and snoozed her, and gave her pain meds, and we were never separated. We were married four weeks later, after the first date. Wow. But on Christmas Day, her best friend, her best friend's wife, Ron Cottle brought him up, come to Martha's for Christmas, because her aunt was fucked up the same year. And that's when I met Ron Cottle. And what did we end up talking about? This is Christmas 83. What did we end up talking about? The Macintosh is coming out in March. I'm going to announce it. It's going to be announced next week. Rumors are flying, finally, that Charles is going to get a Macintosh. A Macintosh. And Ron Cottle ordered Macintosh on the same day, and ended up working together until... 1991. So that's 15 years. We were inseparable tech buddies. And he onboarded me into the world of conceptual design, and got me my first job, when he went to work on Jim Carrey's book. That's my first job as publicist, on my own. I'd worked on real human subjects, and I'd seen it, directed it, but all this detail is important, because it's going to show why Michael Crichton and I bonded after one dinner. And that was, he found out I just worked for fucking James Cameron. Crichton's career was in the shit. He was desperately trying to finish his worst book. He wasn't done yet. And he got so frustrated, and he was so alcohol and drug addled by the end of the book. Do you know how he ended the book? It's all a dream. It's so fucked up. Dude, this guy was out of gas, man. He was mostly alcoholic, coke addict. He was a mess. Nobody would talk to him. So, the sphere comes out. It's a fart in a closet. I mean, it's, you know, nobody wants to be near the closet. It's like, Michael, don't. Okay. His agent Bob Bookman at CAA, and legendary agent, look him up. And Michael Ogles, who was then the owner of the office with Ron Meyer at CAA, just told him, Michael, you've got to do better, man. You've got to do better. And so Michael Ogles, Michael's an incredible researcher. He never starts a project before he knows everything. I mean, everything. He types 125 words a minute. He types so fast on his early computer that he takes his fingers off the screen, and it takes five minutes for the scrolling to catch up. Oh, God. I'm not kidding. He owned the first word processor used by a filmmaker in Hollywood, and $12,000 for it in the 70s. It was like a Wang. It sold like four of them. Michael bought the first one, and he knew that he could follow his writing, follow his novels, follow his script, the Westworld script for the film. I mean, Michael was a genius, but he bloked on, at that time, three marriages that were very expensive to get out of. Two of them were really expensive. Two were after the Wang story. So he still had money, because his book sold like, sold like, But what was about to happen? So, his last gold-line stand play, over $1,000 million. I don't know what I'm going to do for you, Michael, unless you write a hit. Book me. I don't know what I'm going to do for you, unless you write a hit. His then-editor in New York, the guy, Robert Gottlieb, something legendary. Watch the documentary. It's on either Amazon or Netflix. Amazing. Greatest book editor of all time. Says, I don't know, Michael. I think you're going to get dropped by tomorrow. And he was knocked. He was the head of Knopf. You're going to get dropped by tomorrow, and so the next thing doesn't matter. Because this fear book so far, what you sent me, is the worst thing you've ever written, if you can't end it. It's an incredible idea. Admit it. Like all writing books. But if you can't stick the landing on this, I won't be able to sell it. And you'll be able to get the film next month, which I know you're banking on. Because I don't think the book's going to sell very well at all. Some point in the next three months, Bob Gottlieb, Robert Gottlieb, calls Michael and says, I made a decision, Michael. And Michael thinks, I'm going to get fired by Bob Gottlieb. No, I'm going to leave and become the editor of the New Yorker. I'm not going to edit books anymore. And Mark, Sonny Mehta, is going to come in and really come off. Because he's going to be a great person. He's a really nice guy. He's a really nice editor. So at some point, you're going to have to look around and edit your books. Okay. This is all, by the way, this is going to be a great seminar. So Michael comes up with this next big idea. And you know what it is. But it's Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin. He's going to write, essentially, it's a Benjamin Franklin story that Michael Dunham has made. But, but, great stuff. Better research. It would have been fantastic. And he's writing. And we're having lunch with him. When Michael writes, he writes from 8.30 in the morning to noon every day. And we eat in the same restaurant for that month's book. And the reason is, when he writes, he starts a spreadsheet on the day he's going to start writing. And when he makes that spreadsheet, he can think of the idea he has for the book, and he sees it all the way. It's a signature session. So he knows how much he writes every day in those 8.30 to 12.30. And he knows the day he'll be done with the book. So he can call when he's decided to give you the book. It's time to go. He scrubs his office, brings his secretary back to the office. And he says, you know what, I'm going to have a good night's sleep. I'm going to have a good night's sleep. I'm going to have a good night's sleep. Because she'll tell us stories that, like, she has the discussions with Michael for five minutes after I have left. And, you know, I read, Ann Marie Martin like completely devalues me because she left, Michael left Ann Marie Martin's diary on Michael's assistant's desk every day. And Michael went to an appointment, and right there, I read everything that Ann Marie Martin ever wrote about Martha, everything about Michael, and every comment about me working with Michael. She called me. Yeah, that mic back, she talks too much to me. And you look like a deer in the headlines. That was in the textbook. It'll be in the book. It'll be in the book. It'll be in the book. I've got to... Okay, so, Benjamin Franklin in process of writing. Everybody thinks, good idea, maybe a last shot. Nobody's ever heard the story of Ben Franklin, like, that he was a fuck machine in 18th century France, that he really liked to get his dick in everything. Not good at all. Ben Franklin, you don't know. Okay. And he was a genius. He was a printer. He was an absolute fucking polymath. The most, he was, Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century. Well, everybody thinks he's the greatest American ever been, he's the greatest president ever to be president. Mm-hmm. And certainly, by far, he's the smartest of the founding fathers. Michael has a right to, I always put Michael, I mean, mine's around, mine's near the 170 test. Michael was, maybe, I mean, I was more efficient than him, I was smarter than him. But Michael was more, Michael was more disciplined, could organize thoughts, was not ADD like me. And we bonded over Macintosh and Marbles. He was a secret smoker. I was a secret smoker. My wife didn't know I smoked. I read some cigarettes. My son, in 37 years of life, I just asked him the other day, did you ever see me smoke cigarettes? I smoked at home from the time he was born until we got divorced when he was eight. He never knew I smoked. He went on to private schools around town. I saw him every weekend. He would come over to my house. He never saw me smoke, ever, not once, never even a second. So good at being a secret smoker. And my companion was my partner. Ann Marie didn't, he bonded with Ann Marie at that time and he was living with Ann Marie at that time and they actually got married and moved into a nice house on Do you know how San Vicente goes all the way to the ocean? Yes. Yeah. And on the north side of San Vicente there is a street that runs about a block in with all of the mansions overlooking Riviera. Yeah. Yeah. Amazing. Okay. He bought one of those houses for some, it was a bunch of some mortgages he had. But he had a good relationship with his bank because he was, he had been rich. Yeah. And he always made bills. He was never in debt. He just was a rich man. So we got on a coach. He tells me about his Ben Franklin book. It's going really good. It's going really good. It really happened. But it wasn't conveyed to me on the coach. We didn't have drinks and lunches. We had eating lunches and Michael at that time didn't tell me the address. So Michael would let in in every fucking conversation from the time we became social with sale trucks. And that's what, by the way, everybody who knows Michael who has listened to this at some point would go, yeah, Michael used to go to me. He'd get on the coach. Michael quite as a character had a Long Island Lockjaw Harvard accent. So who does he sound pretty much exactly like? Thurston Howell III. That's funny. Now my father's name is James Baggins. But it's spelled E-S rather than U-S. But growing up everybody's like, yeah, Jim Baggins? Mr. Baggins? And then later Thurston Howell III? But if you listen to Thurston Howell III and you listen to Michael Crichton it would be apparent are you just watching a pregnant lady? Yeah. He wants to get Congo, his best book in that field as far as ideas. Terrible ideas. But all of his books are terrible ideas. He wants to get Congo off the ground. I said, that's commercial. He saw that. But, I don't think I'm going to buy it right now. I'm not going to buy it. He sold a good Franklin book to a major director. Because that book is a studio project at that point. So I knew the type of movie business. I knew everybody in the movie business. Because she was on the board of the director's group. Yeah.
