"Meditation on Mercy," for string orchestra, is based on two Chant melodies: "Kyrie fons bonitatis" (Lord, have mercy) and "Asperges me" (Sprinkle me with hyssop). The "Kyrie" melody is in Phrygian mode, with its initial half-step that sets it apart from other modes. The "Asperges me" tune is in Mixolydian mode, thus providing a contrasting, more major sound than the "Kyrie." The two texts seemed to be related as well. Influenced by Ralph V. Williams' "Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis."
